Greeneville, TN

Quaint town - 2/23/2024
Greeneville is a quaint small town with strong historical roots and identity. They believe in keeping history alive, and rather than tear down old buildings, they are slowly renovating them, which adds to the charm. Thankfully, the mindset is to keep history and culture alive, rather than tear things down and build hideous skysc****rs. I have found the citizens to be pleasant, friendly, polite, and very patriotic. The stores you shop in are so quiet you can hear a pin drop, because people don't talk loudly , nor are they talking on cell phones at an excessive level, if at all. Sorry out of towners, but you can be spotted a mile away by the volume at which you speak. You will stick out like a sore thumb. Along with your blue tooth ear buds.
I have found the locals to be so polite, it's amazing. They don't barrel past you in the store aisles, cut you off on the roads or in stores, they say please and thank you, and are amazingly courteous. I have seen "non-locals" get very impatient and rude with people because of the slower pace here. My suggestion is get used to it, or go back where you came from.
However; if you are from the north, west, midwest; any area other than the south, and have never lived in the south, be forewarned. I have lived in the south for 30+ years, and have never been able to acclimate to the "nice to your face, but watch your back when you turn away" attitudes. I grew up in New England; basically, what you see is what you get. I have been told numerous times that New Englanders are rude. No, they just mind their own business, and are genuine. If they don't like you, they don't pretend that they do. Not so in the south. Southern hospitality is not what you may think it is.
Greeneville is small. Very small. One Walmart. No Target, or other comparable store. One Lowes. No Home Depot. Restaurants are generally chain restaurants. Diversity? None. Very, very conservative. Like Trump banners the size of a house? You'll find them here in this area.
Cheaper? Not by much, if at all. Property taxes took a 30% hike this year. Sales tax is 9.75% on everything, including food. Utilies are comparable to the larger city I came from, if not more expensive. Gas is cheaper; insurance; not. Food prices are no cheaper than anywhere else. Health care is pretty bad; even the "locals" complain.
If you move here from anywhere else, you're not a "local". Oh everyone is pleasant, but sometimes you will feel unwelcome in very subtle ways. Some, not so subtle.
Quite a bit of poverty; lots of rundown, abandoned buildings that are old, but with beautiful architecture and potential; hopefully that they will be preserved and renovated, but that could take years. Huge influx of people, that the infrastructure cannot support.
If you are considering moving here; please do your research. There are some larger towns in East Tennessee that may have more what you're looking for, in terms of entertainment, shopping, restaurants; parks, greenways....just not much to do around here. Seriously. Rent before you buy; spend some time; a LOT of time, before you commit. Make sure it's exactly what you were looking for. Oh, and leave any political views, attitudes, road rage, tailgating, horn honking, grid locking, running red lights, speeding, and rudeness, behind. Try to fit in. Do as the Romans do. Respect the culture; don't be so arrogant to think that you can or should change things or the people. No one cares how it was done back where you came from. And if you can't do those things, I suggest you find somewhere else to live, or go back home, wherever that is.

Arthur, you are so dramatic. "Yet you are still here". So "Charlotte". What is so hilarious is by the end of your response, you are going on about morons with arrest records on the city council, the horrid school system, the never-ending construction on ALL roads, etc etc. Well, I got out of there finally. And guess what? I live in an area now where people are honest, kind, friendly, drive normally, and low, low crime. I guess Mayberry and good places and people still exist. And it isn't Charlotte.

No Arthur, I'm GONE!!! And on my knees thanking the good Lord. I don't know what part YOU live in, but right before I left, I had College Hunks rip off my credit card numbers and commit credit card fraud on FOUR of my credit cards; the Postal Service doesn't deliver credit cards (and no it's not even mailbox theft, I have the "informed delivery" that shows what is scanned into the postal system), oh, and the police couldn't be bothered with my report I filed on the credit card theft. Hopefully they are too busy tracking down the gang members, drug traffickers, rioters, thieves, murderers (gee, didn't we have the highest murder rate ever here recently?). No, I'm not from Mayberry; I have traveled Europe, and lived in numerous cities; I even lived in Westchester County (outside NYC) in the 80's before it was "cleaned up", so I would say I have a pretty good idea of what I'm talking about. Charlotte is a DUMP; enjoy the BAD roads, BAD traffic, BAD crime, BAD schools, BAD sports team, BAD weather (hot and muggy) and snooty people, who EVERYONE says isn't originally from Charlotte, so it must be them. Truth is, all the original Charlotteans have headed out of town too. With good reason. Enjoy it!!!!

Still a S____hole. - 5/19/2019
I wrote a review of Charlotte several years back, and decided to write how things how gotten here since that time. In one word.....definitely WORSE. People come here seeing how beautiful and clean it is, but stay here a while, and you will get the true feel. Crime is soaring out of control with a record number of murders this year. There are shootings nearly everyday; even in "safe uptown". The traffic is even more congested, people drive like they're the only ones on the road, Charlotte has been rated #12 in the nation for aggressive drivers. Roads are even more torn up, even more random road closings. No improvement in the transit system; buses and even the trains will randomly have "technical difficulties" and just cancel routes. School system is still horrid, and all this town cares about is getting in more and more people than the roads, schools, hospitals, police and fire departments can support. Oh, but your tax dollars are going to build another stadium. If there is ANY bad publicity about the town, it is swept under the rug; negative news stories and youtube videos (think about the riots) are removed from the internet. It is NOT what it is cracked up to be, and it is NOT a good choice as far as moving here. Property taxes are soaring, with new assessments made in 2018 with people seeing increases in their property taxes as much as 60%. It may make the lists of "best places to live" but trust me as a resident for close to three decades. I KNOW what I'm talking about. Trust me on this one.....find someplace else, because that's what I'm doing as soon as I can.

This is in response to Ron of Arlington. I have read several of your replies. Clearly you are an ignorant bigot. Its people like you that are instrumental in dividing this country. Your comments reek of "ignorant redneck". It's people like you that others need to be truly afraid of. Which is apparently something you want. Any chance you have a shaved head and belong to some organization that believe in supremacy of a certain race? And drive around in a big F150 with a gun rack in the back and dressed in camoflauge?

This is actually a comment to Ron of Arlington, Virginia. I have read several of your comments, and have come to the conclusion that you are clearly a bigot with a grade school education. You are prejudiced, uninformed, and quite frankly, the type of person that scares the heck out of me with reference to "communist" mayors and "left wing nuts" and on and on. Its people like you that are dividing this country; closeminded, prejudiced, and ignorant.

Your review is on point. If there is one tiny lot in downtown Charlotte, the previous buildings are razed, only to have new condo and townhouses built. Look at Dilworth; what used to be a beautiful part of town (and parts of it still are, don't get me wrong, but it is being ruined by the extensive building of condos and townhouses that look completely out of place, and ruin the character of this area. Never mind that some of the buildings are already being sold, and apparently are not able even fill their vacancies. Yet they continue to build more and more. If you bought a condo in the last couple of years, you will most likely lose money, due to competition of the new ones being built, so good luck with that. Traffic is tied up all the time, random road closings, and there have been times where it has taken me hours to get home from downtown, when once not long ago (few years) my commute took approximately 20 minutes. Now it takes twice as long. While the blue line is a great thing, the ability to use it is greatly reduced due to the fact that most stations do not have parking facilities. So if you live a few miles from the blue line, how are you supposed to get there???? No parking, and the bus lines are neither convenient, nor do they run on schedule. Never mind the random changes in the bus line, where schedules are changed, and some stations dropped completely. It seems to me that the "city planners" come up with good ideas, but don't think the entire process through, and figure out exactly HOW people are supposed to get TO the blue line train. They are mowing down beautiful trees that used to make this city a gorgeous place. Just think of the song "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot......" Yes, I've lived her over two decades and it is way past the time to get out. I work for one of the hospital systems, and they ARE overtaxed! Where are all these sick people coming from?? In my opinion, this is not a healthy city in any way, shape or form. What used to be a wonderful town is turning into an absolute nightmare. It's time to go...

I think the post is completely relevant and find it to be dead on. Sorry Ron, but have you every been to New York? And spent ANY time there? Just the fact that you say it is "full of foreigners" shows the absolute ignorant prejudice representative of this town. Charlotte the new south? Oh Please!!!! People higher quality??? You're prejudiced statements indicate the "higher quality" people that reside here. Friendlier? Oh right. Friendly to your face, but don't turn you're back, because you'll get stabbed for sure! FAKE people. But I guess those are your standards. Try to remember 9-11. That "overcrowded place full of foreigners and far left wing nuts" pulled together and helped one another and risked their lives to help each other. I, personally, would not expect to see that here in Charlotte. Example: Ask some of the people that were trampled while evacuating a mall because some gang member decided to shoot a gun in the mall. Funny, don't hear about that happening in NY now do we? Here's another fact for you: Check the crime rates ON THIS SITE. Charlotte's crime is WORSE. Get real.

I am OUTA here! - 3/4/2017
I've lived in this town for 26 years. Loved it when I came, but can't wait to get out. Charlotte is like a big shiny apple...which is rotting inside. Cheap housing, yes. Pretty, yes. Beware, though, of where you buy your home, because Charlotte city planners have a very funny way of slipping in low income housing into middle income areas, and sad as it is, end up having the value of your home plummet. What this town also doesn't advertise is the absolutely horrid school system, crime that is spiraling out of control (check the crime rates on this site; not very pretty!) Gang activity (yup, one of the gangs was featured on "Gangland" on the History Channel), heroin and drugs rampant (yes, it's in the high schools as an epidemic AS reported by our own news team, and it is due to the fact that Charlotte is a great "midway town" for drugs being run from Atlanta to Washington DC)) horrendous traffic with beat up roads that are always under construction, massive construction everywhere with random road closings during rush hour, crappy sports teams. The city would rather build another stadium then invest in some type of cultural activity. But why bother? This city doesn't embrace diversity, although they advertise "cultural diversity" in the "new South". Looking to relocate? If your male, single and young, this is the place for you. If the same but female, move somewhere else, because this town has an overabundance of young females, many looking for potential mates. And the selection pool is not that great. If you have a family with school age children, good luck!!! Unless you have the money to pay for private school who's tuition rivals college, OR, you make great money and can live in a very specific part of town (South Charlotte) you'll end up tearing your hair out trying to get a half decent education for you child. And chances are, they'll get bussed to a school miles away from your home, although there is a school right down the street. No neighborhood schools here!! Buy a home based on school assignments? Jokes on you, because they change the boundaries ALL the time, so your child may end up switching schools several times in his school career. If you would like to find some place to take your child to expose them to a bit of culture, or a museum, good luck there too. The Discovery Place has the EXACT same displays today as they had 26 years ago. Really sad that the city won't invest in places that would actually supplement your child's education. The Nature Museum is an absolute JOKE; again, not updated in 26 years. If you like to eat, drink, and shop, this is also a great place for you, because that is about ALL there is to do. But be very particular about where you shop; some malls have turned into great "hangouts" for people, so they've had to institute curfews to reduce the overabundance of kids just "hanging out" at the mall. Try to ignore the fact that there have been shootings at the mall, involving gang members. The air quality is bad (google it...it's in top ten cities for the worst air smog in the country) the Catawba River is one of the most polluted in the country, (google that one as well, especially since it effects the drinking water) the lakes are polluted as well (coal ash, nuclear energy waste, sewage....). The most recent development is an unusually high amount of rare eye cancers in the area, as well as a staggering increase in thyroid cancer. These are FACTS.
Something is wrong around here. So, if you're considering moving here, please do yourself a favor. Do research. A LOT of research. As the news reported after the LAST riot here, "Charlotte is not the Oz it is cracked up to be." And I'm SURE someone will reply to this and say "Then MOVE!!!" So I will reply beforehand with this "As Soon As I Can, I'm the heck outa here!!!"
