SperlingFile on Oxnard, CA
by Deborah H., SperlingExpert
50 miles from LA, and 40 miles from SB, Oxnard is between Camarillo and Ventura…well situated on the California coast.
Lots of shopping from major brand-name retailers (Macy's, Nordstrom Rack, Target, TJ Maxx, Bed-Bath-Beyond) to mom-and-pop shops. There are over 180,000 people in Oxnard, so it's big.
Nice new neighborhoods and lovely old ones. Old areas being demolished or renovated: positive changes.
Many people see it's "weakness" in that it's an agriculture town, and has a large latino population.

Climate
72 degrees. Mornings are great. Afternoons can be a little breezy/windy. Evenings are cool.
Identical weather to Santa Barbara--Mediterranean climate.
We get flies in our backyard for about 6 weeks (Aug-Sept) a year, but other than that, it's great.
Oxnard is a agriculture town for a reason: 4' of sandy loam top-soil. The most fertile soil I've ever seen. Plants and flowers love it. My garden is beautiful.
Transportation
Bus system, Amtrak and Metrolink to Los Angeles/Souther CA.
Small local airport (one flight daily to Dallas--wish they had more).
Recreation
Endless.
Channel Islands, Ventura Harbor, many parks, beautiful hikes, and it's just 40 miles south of Santa Barbara and 50 miles north of Los Angeles.
No great local theatre (SB is about the same, so go to LA), but they have a music venue in downtown Ventura (10 minutes away) that has great established bands, and the 'up and comers'.
Ventura is almost on par with Santa Barbara's dining scene.
