Good points: Friendly people, diversity, small enough to navigate, opportunities and good business environment, easy to get into and out of (highways, airport etc) Not so good points: traffic, infrastructure, water restrictions, city government

I have lived in Atlanta for 30 years - since I got out of undergrad. I lived in Va-Highlands and midtown, Decatur and now in NE DeKalb in the Northlake area.

People

People are very friendly - they are from all over the world imparting a little international flair to the city. It's not international in the sense that NY or LA or Chicago is, but it's definitely a melting pot. This is more apparent closer to town and in some areas of town. When you get further out into the metro area it's not as diverse.

Economy

Right now (October 2008) the entire economy is tanking, but historically Atlanta has had better than average job growth and lots of building and activity. I've been lucky that I've never had a hard time finding a job (I'm in Information Technology) but now might be more difficult.

Cost of Living

For a major city the cost of living is lower. Atlanta tends to be a consumer city so there are lots of stores and competition is good. Grocery stores are everywhere and seem to be higher quality than in other places. There are lots of places to go out that are good and don't cost an arm and a leg. You may have to find out where locals go or avoid the most trendy spots. Atlanta restaurants and night spots go through cycles and the new ones are replaced quickly by new ones as the hottest places to go.
