This school has no memorable field trips, they hand out 5x6 pieces of paper congratulating a 1st place winner,(is a ribbon that expensive?) No memos are sent to parents about upcoming activities (staff too lazy or paper too expensive?) Eighth grade grads do not get gown or hat (that's really special to an 8th grader) This school should come together and get involved, including administration. Other school principles and staff are there every morning meeting and greeting parents. Other schools send 7th and 8th graders to Disneyland if they do well. Other schools plan so much to make sure students love their school. Discipline at this school should be stronger and more firm. surprisingly, I did receive a couple of teacher phone calls re: my childs school work, All should pitch in,esp. if PTO needs $. |

| 2/26/2009 | teacher | As a teacher in Discovery, I feel that the staff is very caring and concerned about students. We really work well together and support each other well. This breeds a good attitude in the school. I think the discipline has improved immensly over the past three years and I feel supported by my administration as well. There are still a few minor details Discovery needs to work on such as the priorities of the teachers. Any dislike I have for the school really comes from the state of Arizona and their new mandates. I feel the leadership of this school is very poor, the children of this school does not get the attention they need to become mature students. Most of the children are out of control, due to the lack of leadership. This school provides education for students in grades k-8. I feel that any child leaving discovery exiting 8th grade, entering into high school will be lost. |

They never send home any daily behavior reports on any of my children,after asking the teachers to do so.I personally don't like this school and wouldn't recommend it to other parents.Especially!putting your kids in a multiage class,I think that is a big mistake! My 3rd grader doesn't need to learn things from the much older kids that are in the 6th grade! |

We have moved since then and it is hard to find a school with such caring teachers that are so dedicated to their inclusive philosophy. The teachers at the school truly strive to have meaning behind everything they do- from researching about homework policies (Marzano) to creating meaningful 'authoring cycles' that help my children gain empowerment. I will forever be indebted to how they treated my special needs children with respect and included them in the general education environment without hesitation. Discovery school is truly a forward thinking school that is focused on the students needs first! I will forever be measuring all other schools against what Discovery has done-- I am amazed at how hard the teachers work at understanding why they do what they do and how they can improve. Thank you Discovery! |

He has had teachers that cared more about what time they were leaving than the welfare of the child. My sons teacher now seems to care about the children and take the time to engage parents in the childs curriculum. However, he does not have very much homework. Next year, I intend to place my child in another school. |
| 2/9/2007 | parent | I have a son that has attended this school for 3 years now. There have been many occasions of bullying. I have had to bring this to the teachers & principles attention. The concern is that they are never surprised. This seems to be an ongoing occurance. They apparently do not have the tools to get this under control. Homework is also rarely given(Red Flag); & you are not made aware of problems until parent / teacher conferences. Most of the time - that's too late. I do not reccommend the Glendale School District. |

| 6/4/2006 | parent | I have 5 children and 3 of which had attended this school. while my children where there I noticed several things thet were disturbing.First the fact that the teachers never had time to tell you what was going on with your child.The fact that there is nowhere enough supervision especially outside on the playground.I recieved a letter the year I took my children out that stated they were behind the national average and they had shown stats on where other schools were and then proceeded to inform parents that it needed at least 4 years to catch up and to get the children learning what was needed instead of totally unnecessary garbage.When I transferred my children to a new and way better school and had to go so far as to hold back my child that was only in the kinergarden.I also had to hold back the other 2. |
| 4/4/2006 | parent | Discovery has a great PTO which is involved and building community programs (rummage sale, Fiestas, etc) and helping the students with sports uniforms, field trips and helping the school. The principle was a teacher and understands how a school should be run. She's great! They also have a dual language program (spanish). The only one in the district! They have great teachers in the dual language classes. They also have full day kindergarten, for free (some schools districts charge a fee) and they have a preschool on campus. Discovery has a family atmosphere. K-8 is offered and it's an all walking school as it's all w/in the parameters of Glendale, Bethany, 75th and 83rd aves. |

Overall I would give this school a rating of - 10 points. If you are planning to move to Glendale, make sure your child will not be in this schools district. |

My daughter who has always been a straight A student has now been in fights because of people pushing her. She also has not learned anything new since attending this school. My son has had homework 5 times in eight months. I would not recomend moving to this district unless you know your kids will not go to this school!!!! |

(Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) and I was having my doubts about him attending a public school or any school for that matter! The only time he'd been in a 'school' enviroment was day care (about a year ago) for a month and a half and he wasn't 'working'. He would scream and yell in the morning, wouldn't play with the other kids, and I was getting a phone call at work atleast every other day. Well to make a long story short, He is doing great. He gets teary eyed some mornings when I drop him off but its getting better. He's made friends and everyday his teacher says he's doing good. I think it has been because of his outstanding Kindergarden Teacher, that he has done so well. |

Friday workshops are spent looking at student work and investigating ways to improve instruction, engagement, and student achievement. I wish more individuals could see how hard this staff works. |
| 7/16/2003 | teacher | Having attended many Friday workshops, it is time well spent for teachers. It is not time taken away from children. If you count the hours children are at school for the week, you would have figured out that children actually attended more hours than before. Friday workshops are not a social hour. It is professional time well spent to better educate children. I was so disappointed to see that these negatives comments were made. As far as talking about 'favorite books', the point was missed. Children learn through literature and teachers sharing literature experiences with each other will help them grow. Teachers are trying to improve thier teaching to better educate your children and for crying out loud, teachers need to eat for strength. Teachers are people too. Robbing the kids of classroom time every friday so the teachers can eat lunch and particpate in discussing their favorite books, while the school fast descends into 'failing' status makes a mockery of our children's education. |
| 5/1/2003 | | My children have been attending Discovery since 1995.I have 3 kids who have gone thru the 8th grade. One of my daughters were one of the first 7th grade class and went through 8th grade promotion. She has gone onto Independence and graduation in the top 2% of the school. This I can attribute to the teachers at Discovery. My other daughter left Discovery 2 years and I still have an 8th grader at Discovery. I know this school has always been critized about the curriculum, all I can say is, it seems parents these days expect teachers to do the whole educational process, it seems to me it should be a mutual process. Teachers cannot and should not be expected to teach our children everything, parents need hand ons, they should be helping teach in writing, reading and spelling, if parents were more involved in classrooms and at home,teachers would have more individual time,with each student. I know not all parents can help in classrooms but there is no excuse for not helping when children are at home. Please parent become more involved show you care. |
| 4/29/2003 | | I have three children currently attending Discovery and I would like to say that our experience has been very positive. All three children have been in multi-age classrooms since 1st grade. Each of my children are at or well above grade level. Each teacher has always sent home a weekly letter detailing what the classroom did that week and what was coming in the future, I could always refer to previous letters if there was something I had forgotten. There are so many excellent teachers at this school that I have had the pleasure to work with. Two in particular have devoted so much of their own personal time including planning family field trips on the weekend so everyone can participate. As far as parent involvement, this has always been an issue, the PTA involvement in the past few years has been disappointing..if parents are concerned about the curriculum or lack of information being sent home, I think they should make more time and get involved to help solve the problems they feel are a concern rather than point fingers. Our teachers at Discovery are participating in workshops on Friday afternoons and are working on a plan to get this school up to state standards but they cannot do this alone this needs to be a community effort. |

The children are allowed free reign whilst the teachers are clueless. It's no wonder, however, since the rooms are overcrowded. However, in it's defense, this school only mirrors the incompetence with which the District Administration is run. |

My daughter is in the 6th grade and has been there since the 3rd grade, and both of my sons have been at Discovery since Kindergarten. My sons can already read, in fact, my 2nd grader is reading chapter books. Their math skills are excellent and above grade level. My daughter continuously scores above average on her standardized tests. The teachers are great and very caring, not to mention professional and very good at what they do. The Principal is doing a wonderful job at running the school and makes sure that everything is well maintained. |

The classrooms are too full and the school has not focused on traditional education. Therefore, we have many kids that don't have basic math or reading skills. |

If reading test scores are a concentration, the STUDENTS should be doing the reading. The communication to the community needs better administration. As one example, our children attended the school for the year 2001-2, class started at 8:15 am and we found out, only one week before school started for 2002-3 that the start time would be at 7:25 am. I feel that there should be more of an effort on the part of the administration to get the information out to the parents in a timely manner, since the parent involvement is an issue at Discovery. |
