| 9/21/2012 | parent | The school is small, which used to be great, but the resources seem to be wasting away. They have several classes that are overbooked, specifically, their science classes. This year, there is a wait list for physics. Other classes only have one option, conflicting with each other so students may not get their requirements (they recommend adult school for these classes). Shouldn't a school provide the educational requirements necessary to help you get into college? |
| 9/5/2012 | parent | My kids love this school!! All three of them are involved in sports and the IB program. As a parent I would highly recommend this school. It is smaller, has more resources, great teachers, challenging programs and FANTASTIC Kids. I researched all the high schools available in Huntington Beach for my kids and decided to opt out of our home school and send them to OVHS. The best decision for my family. GO SEAHAWKS!!! |
| 9/16/2011 | other | I am a student here at OV and this school is unique and is the underdog in the district. We are smaller and that results in different schedules but more student-teacher time. My teachers truly want to see success from everyone and that goes for all the teachers. Instead of being treated like a number I am a learner who is being supported and challenged every day. The principal is phenomenal, and really cares about everyone he wants us to work hard and values each student. My friends who go to different schools in the district tease me for coming here. I don't know why when we are smaller, have a brand new Olympic sized pool, new classrooms, new rubber track and home of the International Baccalaureate program in HBUHSD. I feel proud to be a sea hawk and look forward to coming here every day. This school is one of the most diverse I've ever seen and students come from all socioeconomic backgrounds and stories. We have an awesome foreign language program with nice and understanding teachers. Every class is challenging and rewarding. I wouldn't want to go to high school anywhere else. You can't spell LOVE without OV and our principal told all of us "I love you". |
| 2/24/2011 | student | This school had great teachers, nice students, and a wonderful principal who truly cares about his students. |
| 12/7/2010 | student | I'm currently a student at Ocean View, and I am very happy to be a student there! Teachers care about their students, our pool is better than most in the county, and API is rising. Administration has been working hard to make improvements, and I think they have been successful. |
| 7/11/2010 | student | i graduated from this school this year and im happy i attended to that school! i got priority at this school because it doesn't have as many students as the other schools around the HB area. they are building a pool now! the classrooms and the buildings are NEW. |
| 4/26/2010 | parent | If your child is not a follower, then this is your school. This especially includes 'quiet' children with good grades and outstanding citizenship. Although hard working administors and teachers are present, counselor is unprofessional and will enable your child to follow the bad crowd (drugs, promiscuity, shoplifting) that you will work hard to remove them from if not remove them from this high school altogether. Huntington High is a much better experience (especially if in APA) yet private school would be your best option for a good education coupled with higher social norms. |
| 4/16/2010 | student | I attended this school and can only pray that it is better than it was when I was there. They don't have their own pool which is ludicrous considering the money/income of most of the surrounding area. The teachers that were there were some of the worst in the district and absolutely no involvement in their students lives or future careers. Most of the land used for PE, track, football, etc. has been developed into a Costco now and there wasn't enough to begin with. More than a dozen classes are taught in 'portables' basically poorly built mobile homes. The students are too close to strip malls which are directly across the street of Warner and Goldenwest and make it far too easy to 'ditch' or avoid school in general. I don't think I've ever been at a worse school and anyone can graduate. |
| 5/3/2009 | student | I enjoyed going to this school all 4 years. The teachers were great, only 2 teachers I would suggest not have but it was a great environent. It felt like a second home to me. |
| 3/2/2009 | parent | This is a great school for teens, no crime or violent cases in this school. It's a safe school for your kids. |
| 2/25/2009 | student | school is bad/ unsatisfactory. clubs like key club do not fulfill the role as a true 'club' - school is extremely UNSPIRTED |
| 2/24/2009 | parent | Ocean View is a great School for Teens they have great clubs for all the kids. |
| 2/18/2009 | parent | I am a parent of two students who attend Ocean View, and they both love it! I feel welcome at the school and have become very involved with volunteering at the school. It's our home away from home! |
| 2/18/2009 | student | I'm a senior at Ocean View and I've really liked my four years here. I've made some great friends, especially on the swim team. My mom is in the PTSA and she's always helping out at school. My little sister will come here next year. It's a great school. Check it out! |
| 2/18/2009 | parent | Both my girls attend Ocean View and have setteled in nicely with the great learning atmosphere, programs that are available and of course the IB program. Hats off to the outreach program to keep parents involved. |
| 2/19/2008 | parent | This has been a excellent High School for my son. The classes for students that would like to take the hightest level in our district are offered here (I B.Program) The Principal Karen Gilden is focused on the accomplishments of the students. She also holds a monthly coffee get together with all parents that would like to attend. She will answer questions and let you know of all things going on with Ocean View. |
| 2/18/2008 | student | I love how safe I feel at my school. I am a senior and have witnessed not more than one fight, which is unheard of, by my friends who go to other schools. I love how involved you can get with going to dances and to the different sport games. They have special assemblies and different school activities through out the year like International Week (learning about different cultures), Yellow Ribbon Week, (suicide prevention), Red Ribbon Week (Drug prevention), Talent Show, International Bachlaurette (excuse my spelling) as well as an array of different clubs including Friday Night LIve (drug prevention), Key Club (community servince), California Scholarship Federation, Peer Asistance Leadership, Yearbook, and so many more the list is endless, and if they don't have the club you like, you can add more. Plus the sport teams are amazing (many go to cif) and you are sure to make the team. |
| 2/6/2008 | parent | I love Ocean View High School, I love the school psychologist, Mr. Tim Baker and RSP, Betty Peery. It's been an absolute pleasure to work with them to help my son. The school Nurse, Joanne Von Kostka has been an inspiration to my son- I am grateful to them. |
| 6/6/2006 | former student | this is a really great school for your child |
| 5/10/2006 | parent | I was a student and a parent at OV. OV has the safest campus in the district and the teachers are caring, involved and easy to communicate with. Give the school a call and find out for yourself-then try it at other schools...don't just belive what I say, check out how the students themselves rate the school at the district office. As a parent I am happy to see the students feel they are safe in their own school. Please don't be deceived by the fact that we have one of the lowest socio-economic areas in HB who attend OV, they are involved and acheivers! Opportunities for all students is a big plus. It would always be great to have more parents involved, but the parents who take leadership positions are extremely committed, and include many alumni long after graduation! |
| 5/7/2006 | parent | I have 2 daughters who have been at OVHS. The small community atmosphere allows for teachers and students to have good communication. Sports programs are available, but specialize in boys basketball and baseball & girls volleyball. Zero tolerance policy for drugs, gangs, violence etc is enforced strictly. OVHS is a muti cultural school with a blend of economic levels as well. The school could use some help with more parental involvement. Back to school nite has good participation. Parking and drop off/pick up access could really use some work...it is a nightmare for parents still transporting their students to and from school. Also tough training ground for new drivers. All in all a good, safe environment for learning. |
| 5/6/2006 | parent | All my children attended Ocean View. The education they received prepared them for life after high school. Like any school, there are exceptional teachers and a few who taught the basics, but teachers, staff and administration, all present a supportive, diverse, caring, safe environment for their students. This attitude is reflected in their students, great, caring students. It is a small school with less then 1500 students. Extra-curricular activities are available to all students. There are fewer students to go around; so sports coaches and teachers often shared players. Our children played sports and did the music program. The coach and band director made arrangements so they were able to do both. Parents are encouraged to get involved. Music, art and sports are there for those interested, but these programs, like parent involvement, rely on the level of commitment of participants. We loved OV. It was like our own private school. Our kids thrived. |
| 5/5/2006 | parent | I don't like Ocean View. I think it is a trashy school with not very much parent involvement. |
| 2/1/2006 | parent | This is school cares about the kids that are there and are interested in their accademics and how to get them into furthering their education |
| 8/13/2005 | former student | I am a former student from ocean view high school class of 2005 and this school was the best to me we have great sports great class and super teachers. Teachers that are fun to have as teachers and teach very well. If you need something they got it. Even though its not the best school in the world it is to me and i had many GREAT memories here and i wish i could stay a little longer but time moves on. Hope your child will too. |
| 12/15/2003 | parent | I have found that the school is committed to helping your child achieve. I have found that communication between staff and pupil is good. Although the school is not ranked high in comparison with other High Schools, I feel that the academic and sports programs are strong. |
| 9/18/2003 | other | There are not enough books to go around. The class sizes are too large. |
| 9/4/2003 | parent | I am not a parent, but I did graduate from Ocean View in the class of 1998. I have many fond memories from this school and hope that it comes to mean as much to future students as it has to me. |
