| 10/4/2011 | parent | We are new to this school this year. I am so incredibly impressed at how wonderful this school really is. The teachers are fantastic and so caring. My son is struggling in math - and his math teacher helps him twice a week during his lunch break! How caring is that! The principal is fantastic. She is so hands on and her door is always open. She is always walking around the school and knows the kids by name. The school is completely organized and structured and everything is in control and calm environment. There is really no chaos anywhere. Whenever you leave a message or email for the principal - she calls you back in seconds. This school outshines any school we have attended so far and wish we had been here the entire time. It is such a nice and warm community and the kids, staff and parents are fabulous. If you can get into this school through open enrollment I HIGHLY recommend it. We couldn't be a happier Carl Hankey Family. |
| 2/16/2011 | parent | There has been a lot of upheaval in the administration of this school in the past couple of years. The principal tried to introduce an International Baccalaureat program, which was not funded by the school district. Extensive fund raising was required. The school is an "IB candidate" school at this time, i.e. the IB program is not yet accredited. The 6th grade schedule now includes two periods a day of English and in some cases 2 periods a day of Math. This means that the Science, Social Science, Foreign Language, PE and are only taught on alternating weeks (therefore, half the material can be covered). Instrumental Music has to be taught before school or after school, and only 3 days a week. Further, the Principal suddenly resigned in January, with no explanation. There are some very good teachers. I advise you to think carefully before sending your kids here. I am not comfortable with the way that the current schedule sacrifices many of the subjects required for a well-rounded education. |
| 1/7/2011 | parent | I have two sons, one in first & one in fifth. It is our first year at Carl Hankey Elementary and it is a truly a great school. The teachers are excellent at what they do. The principal is Dr. Wilbur and he gives his students, parents, and staff 150% You can tell when someone truly cares and he does. |
| 11/1/2010 | parent | This school is OK. Many teachers are great. They are introducing an IB curriculum this year. Advantages of this include availability of a foreign language (Spanish or French) as well as instrumental music (in most CUSD schools, middle school students have to choose one of these electives). Also, some students get a computer technology class which is very good. I am not sure why all students don't get this class, but maybe they will get it next semester. Orchestra or band used to have class every day, but now it is only 3 days a week, before and after school, as the principal says he can't fit it into the regular school day. However, Science, Social Science, Foreign Language, and PE are only given every other week in 6th grade. Some 6th graders have two English periods and/or two Math periods each day. |

| 5/5/2010 | parent | My child isn t a designated GATE student, but all the accelerated students go together so they all learn at the same speeds so he was not bored. The new principal is a no-nonsense guy and there is very little discipline problems, which is saying a lot in a middle school campus. Although he is tough- you still see him out playing sports with the kids. All of the teachers are amazing and go out of their way to make sure the kids are prepared for high school. It amazes me how they worry over each kid. They seem to triumph and turn the kids around, since nearly of the students were on honor roll last go around! I am fully confident that my child will have all the tools necessary and be highly successful with his studying, organizing, social and testing skills learned at Hankey Middle School. |
| 11/16/2009 | student | I really love coming here, and the teachers are really great. You learn a lot, and get to take part in plenty of fun projects. It's very comforting, and Hankey's a great place to send your kids. |
| 10/29/2009 | parent | Go Hawks! We love Carl Hankey. Great staff. Experienced teachers. Our new Principal, Dr. Wilbur is awsome! My child is a GATE student since 2nd grade. He's in 6th grade now and is taking all accelerated courses. Thanks to all great teachers who kept him challenged all these years! Hankey is working on becoming an IB program school. This is no doubt going to benefit our students. Go Hawks! |
| 8/4/2008 | parent | Bad school. Bad staff. Small classrooms. Uninvolved parents. Principal: Does not take action. Kidding. She takes action sometimes. A lot of times actually. |
