8/30/2012parentThis school is absolutely pathetic! The teachers are HORRIBLE and the staff that walks around to monitor the students are on a power trip! They don't try to connect with the students and only play a power trip role that they are superior. My son has been put down, degraded and treated very poorly there, as well as many other students that I know attended there. It is very saddening to know that there are so many students that will go to this school and get the bad teaching and treatment as my son did. There are several teachers here that are NOT happy being a teacher. I have no clue why they are still teaching. It is clearly not rewarding to them. The P.E. teacher is so mean that all she does is yell and scream at the students and put them down. Somebody needs to do something about her......I want to cry when I hear the things all the kids tell me she says to them. I recommend that you transfer your child out of here ASAP! I am not here trying to bash the school, just to alert parents and HOPEFULLY so that someone will find the way to do something about it.
6/12/2011parentThere are a lot of negative things said about this school. It is simply not true. My daughter has just finished 6th grade and she had an amazing year. As a parent, I spend many hours volunteering at this school. Partly because I wanted too, and partly to see how many times the police were called. In a 4 month period the police came 1 time. The teachers and admin. staff are on any problem right away. They take the time to handle it quickly and effectively. The teachers in 6th grade are amazing. They work together to give the kids a positive year of learning. Your child will get out of 6th grade what they put in. The 6th graders start with a Joinville poll party as well as a teacher/student fun night/ending with Raging Waters field trip. Very very exciting year for 6th graders to grow, explore, and learn . Highly recommend this school.
5/21/2011parentThe Bayside STEM Academy is San Mateo's hidden treasure. My daughter Tania is lucky to have her amazing 6th grade teachers. Special THANKS to Ms. Trask and Mrs. Cardenas for helping Tania improve her Math Skills.
5/21/2011parentMy son is just finishing up 6th grade at Bayside STEM Academy. He has had a great time there thus far, and has learned a lot and we really like the school as parents as well. Some reasons: There are many GREAT teachers who are very committed to teaching kids appropriately at whatever their level, especially (but not only) in science and math. The principal and other administrative staff people are also great open to feedback and parental involvement and willing to think creatively and talk openly about solutions to issues that arise. The student body is comprised of a wonderful and diverse group of kids from throughout San Mateo. There don t seem to be significant divides in the school, and bullying has not been an issue at all. There s an increasingly involved parent community though there s more to do in this area.
2/2/2011parentBayside is a small school with dedicated teachers and staff. It is a place where each child is known and has a voice. Its a community where parents can make a difference and be appreciated. Students feel empowered and challenged by teacher acknowledgement and support. Differentiated learning (up and down) is available and highlighted. The athletic school spirit is contagious. The broad ethnic diversity of the student population is not a topic....kids seem to judge on kindness and merit rather than background, fashion or the like so often I see being a focus at other middle schools. I am so proud to have my daughter apart of such a caring, expanding program. I think Bayside is San Mateo s best kept secret.
2/2/2011parentWe have had an extremely positive experience with our child in Bayside for the last 2 years. The school does a super job of offering the advanced coursework associated with the STEM studies, all taught by highly motivated and well-trained teachers, while also maintaining a VERY high priority regarding the respect for all students, both those students involved in the STEM courses as well as those who are not. Personally, it has been this very successful promotion and celebration of of diversity that has most impressed me. The principal is actively involved and very accessible to both teachers and students, while succeeding in setting and communicating a high standard for expectations. The STEM coursework succeeds in introducing not only advanced topics in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math curricula, but also emphasizing the problem-solving approaches available. In addition to learning information and material, it also teaches multiple problem-solving approaches and strategies that become 'tools' in these students' toolbags. I am VERY comfortable and confident in the level of preparation my child has received for what she will face in High School and beyond.
1/22/2011otherI am a now seventh grader at Bayside. For me each class meets my ability and pushes me to grow to my full potential.I feel like if something is to easy the teachers will show me a way to make the assignments more challenging, but if something is to hard I feel comfortable enough to ask the teachers for help or ideas.Class dissuasions are different then other schools I've been to, and they challenge you to think in different ways and from different perspectives. I feel comfortable with the staff and I feel like if I want something done I can make it so and the staff is on my side and will help me accomplish what I want to.The sports teams are very fun to be on and encouraging with a competitive edge that brings the teammates closer. The drama program is growing and the school is planning on doing a stage performance in the late spring.Math club is taught by the algebra and geometry and is encouraging and open to students who are in all the different understandings and levels of math. The music program is well developed and makes you think of music in a different way then you re used to with compositions and conversations. STEM has given me more confidence and helped me grow.
12/1/2010parentBayside STEM has a special program for gifted (GATE) students. After attending the GATE program at College Park, my son chose to go to Bayside rather than our local middle school because it offers more advanced learning in math, lang. arts, social studies, and science, and offers STEM classes where he can explore computers, robotics, and science. Socially, my son has made great friends with both gifted and other students and feels comfortable and safe at the school. The GATE teachers at this school know how to differentiate their teaching to the diverse needs of students. My son's Algebra teacher is so dedicated that she runs a Math Club for students wishing to participate in math competitions. The principal and assistant principal are very open to parent feedback. They hold regular meetings with parents and develop new programs and policies based on parent feedback. They seem to truly enjoy collaborating with parents, which is very unusual for our district. The GATE parents at the school are both a fun community and good at planning great activities for the GATE students and the school overall. I highly recommend this school for gifted students!
10/1/2010parentFrom an academic stand point, Bayside STEM is giving my child the academic challenge and getting him excited about learning. I like the teachers (LA, MATH, SOCIAL STUDIES, SCIENCE, STEM, and BAND) I've spoken with and they are very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and dedicated to education and to the school. Parents however need to be more involved to address the other needs of the students, like after school activities, or in the PTA. The Principal, Assistant Principal, teachers and staff are very visible and open. Thank you Bayside Teachers - you are the best!
9/30/2010parentI am a parent of a 6th grader and couldn't be happier about our choice of school. The 6th grade teaching team is AMAZING, and because of the school's size, the faculty and administration know ALL students individually. I am impressed with how 'design thinking' (from Stanford Design School) is infused into all classes...language arts, science, music, math, etc. In addition to the core subjects, students take electives which concentrate on this magnet school's focus: science, technology, engineering, and math. (i.e. STEM) Talk about students being prepared for today's real world! It is always a pleasure to see my son EXCITED about going to school in the morning.
9/26/2010parentVery talented and committed leadership and faculty. A few years ago Bayside STEM was selected by Stanford's Design School (founded by luminary Prof. David Kelly, founder of the design firm IDEO) to collaborate and create curriculum that also teaches real-world skills emphasizing group collaboration, creativity and a mindset towards deliverables. This, combined with their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) theme is a winning combination to prepare students for the technology-driven world we live in. Incredibly flexible and responsive leadership and faculty respond to constructive parental input. Class assignments are based on the students' needs/abilities. How many schools adjust class assignments mid-year based on STAR test results from the pervious year? The net result is to challenge the gifted yet also provide for those who are struggling. No Child Left Behind is ancient history at this school. Lastly, this is the district's designated GATE middle-school.
2/7/2009studentthe 6 grade teacher gives high grades too easily compared to the 8 the grade teachers. now that they changed the school grading system to the number grading (1,2,3,4) they treat 4 as and a 3 as a b and so on. so children will end up having too much credit for the work they accomplished....i dont recommend parents form enrolling students in bayside
7/13/2008parentThis school has improved a lot in the past 3 years due to the great leadership of its principal Dr. Jane Elliott and some of its great teachers such as Ms. Malli, Ms. Jing, Ms Money etc...
1/11/2008parentTwo of three of my daughters graduated from Bayside. I transfered my youngest daughter because of a decline in the overall academics of this school over the last few years. While there are a few very dedicated teachers their are many more 'green' teachers. This school has for the last few years had a real problem with attracting and keeping good teachers. My advise, pass on this school. Middle school is very important for building a solid foundation for the excellent high schools in San Mateo and Bayside unfortunately does not make the grade.
3/8/2006parentBayside middle School has much potential however I have noticed quite a decline in the teaching.
1/12/2006parentMy daughter loves this school! She gets to participate in dance, learn Spanish and still take all the necessary required classes. Her teachers have been helpful in working with her and her grades have went up this year as a result. Also the Dean of the school is very friendly and will assist with any problems your child may encounter.
3/14/2004studentI'm an 8th grade student at Bayside, and wanted to put in my view on this school. Overall, Bayside provides alot of teachings on arts, which is very fun! We get to choose from a wide list, which includes-art, dance, drama, choir, band, and much more! We also have to take the regulars, math, science, language arts, and social studies. I think Bayside is a good school because it provides a good experience. The only problem is that some students can be 'gang related' but our principle and the staff keep pretty good control on it. I'm just saying, if your looking for a fun middle school for your kid to go to, pick Bayside. I'm leaving this year, so I won't see who comes for 6th grade, but I hope it's your child!
6/21/2003 Although my daughter had a few teachers who didn't earn her nor her fellow students' respect, I think Bayside is a good school and has more to offer students than the other middle schools in San Mateo due to the Spanish Immersion, Drama, Chorus, Band, Dance, Technical Drawing and next year, Jazz Band. The only drawback is that in 2003-2004, the Spanish Immersion students aren't allowed to take Jazz Band because they are only going to be allowed to take one elective besides the Spanish Immersion. My daughter and a few of her classmates who had Advanced Band last year want to take Jazz Band and are disappointed. You must be enrolled in Advanced Band again while taking Jazz Band this year which requires 2 electives. My daughter has now dropped Band and decided to take Chorus.
