8/18/2011otherIt has been 10 years since I graduate from this school. One word to describe it: horrible! When I hear people telling others that the honor's program here is extremely rigorous, all I can do is just shake my head. I graduated whs passing 6 AP exams with at least a score of 4; but if you think that is going to prepare you for college, you need to take a walk and breathe in some fresh air. This school is best at making kids work hard in areas that do not benefit them for college; its teachers love to assign busy works and parents are often not too smart to figure out what is going on until it is too late. If you want to prepare yourself for college, then take college classes at goldenwest college instead of taking its AP courses. 10 years ago, the math teachers there were horrible; if they are still around, start running the other way! Everything about this school is horrible to me except the friends that I made during my time here. If you are a parent and you have a choice, send your kids to Irvine. If you are a parent and you do not have a choice, then beware that some of these teachers are the most horrible people you can trust educating your kid! Don't say you hadn't been warned!
8/4/2011otherI have been a student at Westminster for 3 years, and I have loved it ever since the first year! The honor's program here is extremely rigorous, but it ensures that we will be ready for college as soon as we graduate! The teachers are encouraging and always willing to help. The MERITS program is also great because it allows us to take more rigorous AP classes early on, an advantage over other schools.
5/9/2011studentI am currently attending this school going on 3 years. I love this school and its environment. I am one of the few non-Asian students that are in the AP classes and I am part of the music department. I would say that this school excels in academics, but not so much in sports. We could have a better sports program but I understand that ours sports teams do good in alternating years. The incident with the former Biology teacher should not reflect poorly on the school in any way. For those thinking of transfering students to other schools, I would like to say that 1) no other school in the district can say that they have won the OCAD 5 years in a row, 2) that student would be missing our on great academic opportunities offered at Westminster, and 3) its just ridiculous that people think because a teacher went astray that it is going to affect the students badly.
4/26/2011parentMy kid have been in this school for two years. She is not happy at all. Students here are always bullied and jealous. One of the blond old woman in the attendant office is not very nice to the students and parents. One of the biology teacher and his wife has an inappropriate behavior with his students. The teacher makes the school look bad now. Is this how the biology teacher teach the student how to learn inappropriate manner. I am going to transfer my kid to a different school next year.
2/27/2011studentI love this school i have been here for 2 years so far the football program is excellent and clubs are excellent. Sports overall in this school are excellent with a 6 year win in league for football. I love this school it is amazing and i have no complaints. i dont know what people mean by gun shops across the street and camera pointed in restrooms ... i havent seen that .. thats insanity hahaha their just making up stuff to give this school a bad name
9/16/2010studentI am an alumni from this school. Graduated 2009, and I absolutely love this school, the students, the environment (even though there's construction -_- ), especially the teachers. I've been in college for two years now(plenty of great professors) but my fave instructor is still my Jr year English teacher at Westminster. The teachers/administrators all genuinely like the students and are all working for the students. MERITS allowed me to take all four AP science classes by the time I graduated and now I don't have to take any science classes in college. It was hard work but the teachers I had made it all worth it. If your student's middle school feeds into WHS I recommend you seriously consider this school. All of my mentors stem from my HS experience.
7/2/2010parentAll three of my children have attended WHS. I have been very pleased with the staff. They have been very accommodating with my special education child.
10/24/2009studentExcellent school, excellent teachers - despite what it might have been in the past, it's certainly doing very well now, and a large number of the teachers here are so enthusiastic and encouraging (they know just what to say to get their students in gear and a lot more aware about what we're in store for, certainly). As long as you know where you stand on your education, this is definitely one of the better schools around here. All depends on how motivated one is, as always, and they are definitely willing to help.
3/13/2009studentThis is probably one of the best schools to go to. The teachers are doing a great job and the sports and club are awesome. Other then the construction, I enjoyed my 4 year.
2/19/2009studentIt's a very diverse and crowded school. There is a lot of litter everywhere and the construction still hasn't ended so right now it is not a pretty sight. There are some teachers i know who are disliked by a lot of the students-including some graduates-but if you wish to be a well-achieving student you will most likely be stuck with them. There are some nice teachers though. There is no dress code being enforced though so be prepared to see tons of girls bearing their skin.
1/18/2009studentIm a student here. Right now i think its a very good school, on how the teachers teach and the study habits.
12/26/2008otherIt all has to do w/students doing their part, students always have the support of teachers to make the best of it.
2/4/2008studentExcellent school. I graduated in 2006. It just gets better and better every year. They are building new classes, buying new books, have automated machine calling home to inform you about the attendance and testes, and everything possible for the kids. Teachers are awesome. They really do go the extra mile to help the kids.
9/13/2007former studentAs far as public schools go, this is one of the best. Education is top notch. Teachers are really good. And athletics and other extracurriculars are plentiful. Great school for kids.
5/2/2006former studentawesome school! graduated from there in 2001 and i would send my kids there in a heartbeat!
4/1/2006parentI had a senior with junior credits. WHS staff was instrumental in getting him caught up and on track for graduation. They seem to really care about their students.
1/14/2006former studentAs a recent graduate, I believe that Westminster is an awesome school and prepared me very well for college. The AP and Honors programs are fabulous.
12/27/2005parentWestminster High is one of the high schools that provides kids with a good education if they really want one. That is if you can get around all the trouble makers. Many kids are just on the wrong side of the path. Many are in gangs. Homeschool or put your kid in a private school first.
9/2/2005studentThis school is for me, is the best one I've ever been to. The teacher's here are very helpful. I've grew up in a poor family, so I couldn't pay to join wrestling. I've told them about this and the next thing I knew.....I have a wrestling class. This school might not be the best, but they're very helpful and I'm thankful for that. Will H. Vo
8/22/2005parentMy son had excellent teachers and engaging classes. He was able to participate in football and track while taking a full college preparatory schedule. The positive coaching that he received encouraged his performance in all his classes. He is doing very well at a Cal State now and owes his success to the preparation that Westminster provided. Some of his outstanding teachers were Ms. Braun, Mrs. Lang, Mrs. Jones and Coach McMillan.
6/3/2005parentAdmin office very helpful, a variety of classes and clubs offered.
4/25/2005parentThe school lacks technology. Also, no school newspaper.
4/19/2005parentMy son was accepted into the Merits math and science program which is a focus ciriculum on these two subject matters. They take advanced and special classes. I also know of the Health academy which plans the ciriculum around health and science. There are many oppertunities for sports and extra activities and there are always other parents that are willing to help out.
5/30/2004former studentI have to say, this school is not the best, but if you wanted the best you would pay for private school, and yes there are problems. But we overcome these problems and hopefully learn from them and take them into the future with us as we grow older. I have learned a lot from coming here and the teachers I have had the pleasure of meeting are wonderful because they are passionate in what they do, which does reflect your work.
5/27/2004former studentI think westminster high school is a great school for high schoolers. The teachers are great and helpful. They have a lot of different programs for the students. For example, they have an after school program to help kids with homework or anything they need.
5/18/2004studentI am a current student at Westminster High School, class of 2004. Westminster High School is a great school. It offers many programs that other schools in the district and in the state don't offer. I am currently involved in the Health Science Careers Academy. A great program for students interested in the health or science fields. Despite the fact that Westminster High has had a bad reputation in past years, it has come a long way and its improvement has been awesome. The teachers are exemplary employees, dedicated to their work and to their students. The Adminstration is great too. The negative comments you might have read or heard of, could have possibly come from students or parents who didn't take advantage of the many opportunities WHS offers. Students here are proud of being Westminster Lions and show their pride by their work and accomplishments.
1/14/2004studentAs a student attending Westminster Highschool, I think it is a good school with many qualified teachers, especially in the math and science subjects since I am in the MERITS (Math Educational Resources Integrated with Techology and Science) program. WHS has its bad reputation in the past (20 years ago) and because of those past incidencts that are not forgotten, it is the only reason why WHS is recognized poorly. A review stated earlier stating that WHS is a segregated schoool and I believe every school is like that regardless. In fact, there are rarely any fights that occur on the school campus. And as for a gunshop across the street, which does not exist, and a liquor store (selling candy and chips for students who wish to purchase their snacks)does not mean the school is violent and unsafe. Westminster highschool is one of the most protected and academically challenged (meaning the curriculm is difficult however the students that attend westminster high school are intelligent and confident enough to take and pass.
1/9/2004studentI would say that Westminster High it is an okay school. The staff is very involved with the students, and has great enthusiasm. Disputes happen everyday at all schools, so there is not a perfect school. With the modivation the staff gives and great students that attend, it turns out to be an okay school.
11/7/2003parentvery bad reputation and is well deserve! Unmotivated kids, bad environment and unmotivated teachers. my family experienced Westminster for only five months until I escaped.
9/9/2003parentWHS has a bad reputation, but my daughter goes there and its great.
8/25/2003parentMany students go to class in rotten Mobile homes. There are cameras that are pointed at the open doors of every single restroom. There is a gun shop accross the street from the school along with a liquor store where students like to go and slack off and cause mischief. There has been too much downtime from crew redoing all of the school wiring. Once there was a leaking gas line that has gone undetected for a couple of weeks. Many students and teachers were getting sick from the smell. This was in the two story H building I believe. During the summer months there are at least 5 police cars parked out in front with school police everywhere watching the campus to make sure no fights break out. The school is very segregated with all the Vietnamese keeping to themselves - same story with the Mexicans and the caucasian students.
