12/29/2010parentBugbee has a new, young, enthusiastic and energetic principal. We loved the school for our older two, but now with our youngest we feel it is even better. Amazing teachers, great leadership, fantastic school community. Warm, caring environment, great special ed, beautiful well-equipped yet classic building, quiet location, playing fields and playgrounds. And, it was just rated 2nd elementary school in the entire state of CT! I highly recommend it.
1/12/2008parentAbout as good as it gets in a public school. Small, wonderful community. Lovely older building with lots of playground space and playing fields, in a quiet, safe neighborhood. I cannot begin to express how much sincere, individual concern the teachers have shown for my children. Oh, and I've never heard of my kids missing recess to do schoolwork. Homework is not excessive. Choir, band, a big plus. My kids love the place!
1/7/2008studentAmazing school! Their is a very strong sense of community and the teachers really care for students. The acaademics are the most amazing part; nearly everything is taught from the teacher, not a textbook! Bugbee has excellent programs and academics, but what stands out is the arts and music programs. Almost everyone (sometimes ieven everyone) is part of the band, choir or both!
4/16/2007parentI agree with the foregoing comment. Bugbee is a wonderful place with great kids and families, however, there is a disconnect someplace along the line. While the school(and Bd. of ed) emhasizes, 'go, slow and whoa' food choices to curb childhood obesity, they routinely take away recess so that the kids can complete homework or other assignments. This makes absolutely no sense.
6/15/2006parentIs it possible for a school to be too serious about academics? The answer is yes, and the evidence is Bugbee. Great teachers and programs, but many times, this school seems more focused on pumping up their standardized test scores and protecting their reputation than on the principal's stated mission of 'making learning fun.' A daily hour of homework begins in first grade and only gets worse every year. Add that onto an already long school day and Bugbee students don't get a lot of time to just be 'kids.' Severe discipline can make the hallways and cafeteria feel more like a prison than an elementary school. Bugbee could be truly great if they'd just loosen up and realize this is elementary school...not a college prep school.
