| 3/27/2011 | parent | I love GHS and believe this is one of the best HS in Osceola County. My daughter graduated from GHS in May 2007, and is currently finishing her Bachellors degree in USF and enrolled in a master's degree program. The teachers and administrators at Gateway HS are extremely helpful. I absolubtly highly recomment Gateway HS. Go Panther!!! |
| 12/19/2008 | parent | I heard so many bad things about the school but I believe a school does not make the student. The student makes the school. So far, my son has not had one problem. He has so many friends. He is in the honors program. While the curriculum is a bit tough he is keeping up the pace and it's made him much more responsible and serious about his future. He plays varsity football and now helps out with the basketball team. He's taken the PSAT's and has a feel for the SAT exams. He is looking forward to the next few years and already thinking about college. This is the attitude I want him to keep. The teachers are good. I've emailed them on several occasions when I have had concerns and they have responded all the time. Some have emailed me at their initiative. Communication is the key to success! |
| 12/18/2008 | parent | The standard of the school has greatly decrease this year mainly, I believe, because of the cuts in school funds. Otherwise the school is great and the teachers are helpfull and well educated |
| 8/2/2008 | student | i believe this school is better than the average public school. i am in the IB program over there and the students are great and willing to learn at all costs. i think that if you know that your parents can't afford your college try to get to this school so that you will excel in your academics. this school can up your atheltic ability but not as high as poinciana high school(basketball, football) |
| 12/23/2005 | parent | This is a very good school, the students get all the attetntion that they need. |
| 6/24/2005 | former student | Gateway is a good school. I learned a lot as a former student. |
| 6/15/2005 | parent | The principal is very involved. He runs a 'tight ship'. Security is high. Students can choose to associate with other students who are focused on academics. The rumors that run around about this school are unjustified. |
| 6/13/2005 | parent | This is the best school in florida. |
| 1/10/2005 | student | The mainstream courses at Gateway High School are mostly acceptable, though some are subpar, due partially to the low-budget school district and lack of sufficient numbers in the teaching staff. However, I remain impressed with the International Baccalaureate courses and teachers, which seem to be excellent. However, in an ideal environment such as an IB classroom, where students are motivated, disciplined and willing to learn, it probably wouldn't matter if the teacher was a complete moron. Unfortunately, as is to be expected, students still remain who are there only because they are too young to drop-out and create continuous discipline problems for the school. Under the new principal, though, discipline seems to be taking a turn for the better. |
| 1/7/2005 | parent | The main problem with this school is that it is overpopulated! The IB program is great, however great regular academic classes as well as good teachers are harmed because there are just way too many students per classroom. Some sports are not that successful, but yet they do provide a good opportunity for students to develop their athletic abilities. |
| 11/15/2004 | parent | this is the greatest school ever.My son went there and got a quality education. |
| 5/19/2004 | parent | To me the school is not good at all they wait for the last minute to tell your students if they graduate at all. They know these students are paying for their senior fees and all and wait 2 days before graduation to tell a student sorry but your not graduating. |
| 1/8/2004 | parent | My daughter graduated from the IB program at GHS in 2002 and was so ready for college that she thought her freshman year was easy. My second daughter will gradute in 2005 and is not in the IB program and is still getting a quality education. (she has some of the same teachers as IB does) I visited all the high schools in Osceola before sending my children there and GHS was by far the best one. |
| 12/11/2003 | former student | I am a graduate of GHS (class of 2002), as is my older brother, and my younger sister is there now. For everyone's information- the IB program was given to GHS in the hopes that it would improve the school and it's reputation, *not* because it was so wonderful that it was the only school that deserved it. The teachers and administration have become so caught up in the IB program that the majority of non-IB students feel ignored, left out, and resentful. The administration when I was at GHS was very difficult to talk to, for students and parents. Miscommunications were frequent, and often had severe results. The principal has changed, but as far as I can tell from my sister's current experiences, the administration as a whole is still the same way. I was fortunate enough to have several very good teachers at GHS, but like every school there were those who had no business being in the profession (why be a teacher when you clearly dislike children and parents??). Giving students 'busy work', or listing the page numbers on the board and sitting at your desk all period is no way to teach a class. As far as extracurricular activities, the school put a great deal of support (financially and otherwise) behind the sports teams (even those which never won), but the band program was often ignored, despite the awards and successes it experienced. Safety and discipline were about average, although the miscommunications mentioned before were often in regard to discipline, causing it to be irregular, too lenient, or too harsh. Overall, students who have graduated from Gateway and have gone on to further successes did not get preparation for the real world and college and the 'tools they needed to succeed' from GHS- they had it in themselves all along. |
| 11/17/2003 | parent | My 3 children graduated from Gateway. They all graduated from FSU and my son has earned his Doctorate. This school helped them on their way. Education is what each child takes from the school to move forward and that depends on the student not the school . I believe every teacher wants the best for the student no matter what grade the school has or gets . |
| 11/3/2003 | other | Okay, I'm not a parent, but I am a student at Gateway High School. I personally feel that we do have great teachers, although the best teachers we have are so caught up with the IB students which gives us students in Honors Classes or Mainsgtream classes no advantage. I feel that the teachers should be spread throughout the levels evenly giving everyone the opprotunity to work with well organized instructors. Thanks! |
| 10/7/2003 | parent | It is interesting to note that this 'D' school supposedly has the highest level teacher education while an 'A' school less than a mile away has the lowest teacher education in the area. The administration of this school barricades themselves (from concerned parents) behind operators and secretaries. You would think that a school with such a low rating would be pushing as hard as they can to improve the level of education of the students instead of trying to have the best band in the county, or, wasting time studying for the fcat. |
| 10/7/2003 | other | Being in Osceola County, and having my child grow up here, I feel he has not had the benefits that other counties provide in Florida for other students. Many times my spouse and I have become frustrated with procedures - even before the school starts (getting school supply list, schedules...) to school grades from a non-working email site. Often times, while reviewing the material handed out, we have found 'errors' in the review material. Maybe if the teachers would take the time and observe their class obligations, maybe this would not happen. A concerned Mom. |
| 9/10/2003 | other | Students in Osceola County are lucky to have the IB program available to them, and Gateway High School is fortunate to have the IB program housed there. It has contributed to increased student participation in all extracurricular activities and especially to higher test scores overall. The teachers are excellent, the program is challenging and certainly provides excellent preparation for college. The Gateway administration and the school district need to be more appreciative of the IB program and recognize all the positives it has provided GHS. |
| 8/31/2003 | parent | My daughter graduated in May 2003. I feel Gateway gave her all the tools to succeed in college and beyond. Gateway was lucky to get the International Baccalaureate program which is a very fast paced and challeging program. My daughter was always doing projects, papers and/or research. A big problem is not enough parental involvement and that is what will make or break a student. Gateway has many great teachers, administrators and resources to make each and every student be the best they can. |
| 8/31/2003 | parent | I have 2 students currently in Gateway. They, thank God, are good students and are involved with sports. They have, so far, been able to stay away from the 'bad element'. There are always areas that can be improved but as far as pubic schools go..Gateway is better and safer than any other high school in Osceola County. I researched the violence stats at the Sheriff's Office. |
| 8/22/2003 | former student | Gateway High School is a safe and wonderful school for all children. It was chosen as the ONLY school in the county to have the International Baccalaureate Program. With the help of experienced teachers and staff, standarized test scores have risen even though the school has over an 80% minority rate. I am very proud to be a part of Gateway High School. |
| 8/10/2003 | parent | I think that this school is far to over populated and I think my child deserves a better education than what this school can give her. Yet I also fell thaat if the goverment would spen more moneyon our schools then our children who have more f a chance. Concerned parent |
