5/6/2012otherI love nautilus! It is my second home! The programs are kind of hard and lots of homework but I liked it!!
2/27/2012parentBeware of Mr. Smith (administrator) thinks that bullies don't bully unless they have a reason. WOW! My son got bullied and Mr. Smith said "what did your son do to provoke the bully?" WOW! On another incident Mr. Smith was told by name that my son was involved in a fight where 3 kids hit him I still haven't received a call from him that my son was attacked. I showed up in school to see him and he responded " I did not need to call you!" WOW! Please Parents if you have had similar issues please take your time to write on this. Please, I feel like i'm the only mother going through this and I know that is not the case. I will guide you if you need support.
2/27/2012parentMy daughter and I like Nautilus. She's in the Junior Scholars program which is pretty much what we thought it would be: rigorous. The teachers are great! So far as the kids and any bullying, my daughter has made many new friends and still has many from her old school: South Pointe Elementary. We keep in touch with many of her former clasmates and none have reported any problems that I'm aware of, though I'm sure there are with a school this size. One surprise are the opportunities for music, theater and sports that offer lots of options. And the school is in one of the nicest neighborhoods in the country so I never worry about her walking home, taking the bus, whatever. In short, we are very pleased and comfortable with the school.
1/14/2012otherIm recently in NMS, im in 8th grade. I've been in this school since 7th and it is a great school to me but the problem is some teachers can be really rude... the secuirty, there not bad buttt they are friends with the bad kids soo... Students can be mean to but theres always mean people in schools so thats not a problem, but there are also ALOT of nice, friendly students. Other than that its actually a pretty nice school.
8/22/2011otherI go to school at nms it has good teachers and good staff but One thing I don't like is the security and most students The reason I don't like the security is because they Are all friends with all the misbehaved kids and most of The kids are bullies one time in nms a kid brought Jet fuel to burn down the school and all they did was Send him to juvy for ten days and he came back to the school a week Later also there is alot of drug using in the school
7/28/2011parentLa experiencia de mi hijo ha sido muy buena. Excelentes profesores. Yo podria sugerir que hubiese mas opciones de actividades extra catedra.
5/26/2011parentYou cant have the school without the students. The school is a grade A. The teachers did not take the FCAT. Last time I checked the students were the ones tested. That must say something- Kids at the school can't be all that bad!!!.. It takes two to tango. Skiping? Most definitely a big problem- where is security? Where are campus monitors? What is Administration up to?
5/22/2011otherIt's okay ....i guess , I really am not enjoying my time here in this school. Mostly because of the students , there bullies everywhere and people are always skipping. There some good teachers but only a handful of them and right now we are dropping in FCAT levels because none of the students care. Whats worse is that the most badest students are friends with the security. Honestly this school would great place to attend if it weren't for the students
1/12/2011otherThis school is okay i had fun but there is lots of drugs and fights. Some teachers arenice though
9/29/2010otherI am student at NMS . While i have attended this school i have notice terrible cases with the students and teachers. The students are always getting in trouble and really dont care about the consequences because they do it over and over again. Kids are always late to class, skip class and dont care. Im one of the students that have gotten hurt by some of the kids. There are a lot of BULLIES!! There are at least one fight a day, and kids are entertain by that and the securities dont care either about stopping it. Most teachers dont teach at all. I had to attend a tutor place for help for the Fcat ! I wouldnt suggest any kid to come here theres drugs, classroom overcrouding there are like 40 kids in a class, pushing in the halls and pushing on the stairs, i didnt love going here.
10/5/2009parentAs a parent I can say my son is very happy . After we moved from Doral Middle school area I found Nautilus a very good option for my 13 years son, great staff, good security employees, teachers very accesible.
9/10/2009studentHonestly, the enviornment in this school is okay. The bathrooms are usually dirty, the halls are over-crowded, the security treats us like dirt, and there aren't many good influences. it's an okay school, but there are only a select few teachers that i would recommend. some have been there so long they act like they own the kids, and some have been there for so little they let the kids do whatever they want. this school did not prepare me for high school at all except for the few teachers who actually somewhat cared about us and our grades. Mr. Everett Evansky, Mr. William Lollis. Great teachers who showed me what high school was about to be like.
2/12/2009parentThis is one of my favorite schools that I have ever volunteered at. I am gald to have my kid enrolled in this school.
8/25/2008studentI haven't attended Nautilus Middle School for very long but so far it's O.K. The thing that bothers me, however, is the lack of disipline with the students. They push and shove each other in the halls, and are almost constantly cursing. Some will form little groups in the halls, and block the other students. This causes many students to be late for class. Also, many are loud and unruly and have no respect for school property or other kids property. They put their garbage into other students bookbags, and write and draw things in text books that would get them suspended at my old school. I think the school staff should watch the students more carefully, and try to have some ACTUAL control over them.
7/8/2008studentI go to nautilus middle school and i am starting a new school grade by going to 8th grade and to tell you the truth i learned alot :) my teacher were: Ms.Bolt(dance) Mr.Mccoy(civics) Ms.Hoyer (reading) she is a new teacher but is awesome too :) Ms. Bonnet (Math) Ms.Bolt(drama) Ms.Miyares (science)!! they are all great teachers and i'm going to miss them all :'( - Luz :DDDD
6/24/2008teacherI have worked at Nautilus for two years but have 20 years in the Miami Dade County School System. Every school has its problems but the problems at Nautilus are minor compared to other locations at which I have taught. Some of the students are a bit immature in their behavior and this makes them seem rude. The staff is excellent as a whole and very dedicated to helping students to succeed. Unlike the school I left, they administration is very supportive of the teaching staff. Parents are welcomed as volunteers and a active in school policy through a PTSA that is truly oustanding and an active ESAAC committee.
6/10/2008studentI have attened Nautilus Middle School for two years and I have to say this is indeed a great school. The enviornment is just perfect for a good education, which I have recieved with great joy. The teachers are great. All I have to say is that NMS has to improve in organization and teamwork. The lunch lines were huge sometimes, although the end of the year food fights were controlled very well. In my opinion they have to become a bit more strict with the punishments they give, since everyone has to realize no student really cares about a simple detention, although I as a student do. I love Nautilus Middle School since it gave me a knowledge probably no other school would have given me.
5/19/2008teacherI worked there as a substitute teacher many times and unless your student is in a gifted program I would worry about them getting mixed up with the wrong crowd there. Many rude and disrespectful students who are more worried about being accepted by their classmates than their actual work. Easily one of the worst schools I have worked at; Feinberg/Fisher K-8 Center might be a better choice to send your child to.
5/6/2008parentIts students were very rough as I once walked through the Nautilus doors for dismissal at 3:40 p.m. Although, the skills learned at this middle school are admiringly extraordinary.
2/5/2008studentI really like this school. Its in great condition. The restrooms are clean. And faculties are great.
10/8/2007studentOkay, at first I was mad about the block schedule, but I've adjusted to it now and actually prefer it. The peer mediation program is excellent and the teachers for me this year (Dr. Glatzer, Mr. Hickey, and Mr. Quesada) are witty, far from boring and make the learning experience enjoyable. I'm actually paying attention in geometry!
10/7/2007studentI love this school!!!! I went to Nautilus last year as a seventh grader and it was a pretty good year. I left the school a month before school was over, but now I realize that was a bad choice to do. I been to two different schools called Citrus Grove Middle And Rockway Middle, but I liked Nautilus much better. The uniform was alright, but I'm glad they're letting us wear shorts. I loved my teachers. They were smart and funny and I always had a good time in their class, but when it was time to work, it was time to work. I would like to thank Mr. McCoy (civics), Ms.Bonnet (math), Ms. Davis (language arts), Mr. Cotabarren (french), Mrs. Linton (science), and Ms. Bolt (dance) for educating me the best way possible and helping me enjoy my school year at Nautilus Middle School!
8/28/2007parentI was worried because it's a big change for the kids, from Elementary to Middle and schelude, but the school has given us all the info We need and I'm very Happy with the Teachers and School Personnel.
8/13/2007otherAs a former dedicated aide at NMS, there are many pros and cons. Pros- wonderful, supportive staff; mostly professional & smart; decent working environment; Good kids; Cons- many out of control children (discipline); lack of parental support / lack of communication w/parents- many speak only spanish & do not care; large classes; focus is on the FCAT & Testing, not quality of teachers or student work; worry too much about Title 1 money.
7/17/2007parentThis school has frequent changes in administration and teachers. Moslty due to lack of teamwork. The Gifted program is avergae. As a parent I find this school to be mediocure. Good teachers just have no support!
9/19/2006parentAs the head of the Advocates for Gifted and Advanced Education,www.giftedadv.org, Nautilus has responded fully to the requests of parents to improve the Gifted program by establishing high school courses, the appointment of a Gifted Chair and a highly competitve Junior Scholars Academy which now has a waiting list for entrance. It progressed from a C to A school, a model for replication. Its curriculum for gifted and advanced education surpases any private school in the County. It is a testimony to parent, faculty and administrative collaboration. The students are inclusive and diverse. Concert and Jazz band have received many national awards. Highest 7th grade math FCAT scores in County. Principal, Assistant Principals are effective and parent friendly. I am poud to have my son and recently,my daughter in the Nautilus community.
9/19/2006studentMy daughter started this year her 7th grade in Nautilus Scholars Academy Program and she's doing really good, enjoying her classes and feeling very stimulated by her teachers. My husband and I were impressed to meet them at the open house and learn how they make their classes more challenging for this group of advanced students. We've heard some stories about violence in the school, but so far the only incident our daughter had is that the lost of her cell phone in the cafeteria and still no one has turned it in. We're really looking forward to help in any way possible to support Nautilus faculty in their efforts to provide a great education and a safe environment.
6/10/2006parentgreat programs, great new principal. My kids enjoy the after school clubs
5/17/2006parentTerrible school. My child does not feel safe.
5/9/2006parentNautilus is an excellent school. My son came from North Beach Elem's gifted program which provides excellent preparation for the gifted program at Nautilus. He has taken algebra1, earth space science, biology and geometry all for high school credit while at Nautilus. Unfortunately the language arts program needs serious improvement as the gifted kids seem to be in a holding pattern for 2 years, compared to the advanced reading they did at North Beach's gifted program where they covered several works of Shakespeare. The music program is first rate, my son was in the orchestra & they went to Orlando for competition in 2005.The sports programs are excellent as well, boys softball was competitive this year as well as track & field teams. Not many field trips this year though. Parent involvement is phenomenal. The gifted association was instrumental in getting a fulltime gifted coordinator and the PTSA is award winning.
5/7/2006parentMiddle school age is not easy in any area of life. I believe Nautilus has improved under the direction of Ms. Figueredo; already this year's 8th grade writing scores were the highest in the district. My son is in the gifted program and taking advanced high school credit courses. He is also in the elective music program. The only problem I see is parental involvement. Children at this age need more of it. There are parents that don't even attend the musical shows their own children are playing in. There will always be good and not so good teachers. Nautilus offers a great afterschool tutoring program for those that need it - parents need to stay involved and know what their child needs to learn, succeed and move on -
2/15/2006parentMy son attended nautilus for two years in the gifted program. His best academic teaches (trinidad and jackson) are no longer there and I see the difference. I have taken my 7th grade daughter out to home school her with core academic classes, but have left her in her concert band (great program with mr. Modia) and have changed her to an honors level science class. The school has a new principal this year and she is great. I expect nautilus to improve its scores from previous years with ms. Figeredo at the wheel.
1/12/2006parentMy oldest son attended Nautilus Middle about two years ago, and my youngest son is there too. Both are in the gifted program and I agree with the parent that gave a very good review about it. But when it comes to review the school as whole, there are some obsrvations to take into account. The school is really chaotic at the beginning of the school year in relation to elective classes and schedules. God help you if your kid does not get the right schedule! Parents and students are directed to so many different administration people without a fast response.According to my son, the new principal is into practicing for the FCAT.That was not the case with the other principal. My oldest son's L.A. teacher didn't 'believe' in preparing for the FCAT, so you can imagine what kind of results you get.Oldest principal totally unresponsive about this matter.
7/12/2005teacherSchool totally unresponsive to the needs of kids who require additional help on areas such as FCAT. Not conducive to a good learning environment, because of unruly children.
6/3/2005studentI think nautilus middle school is a good school because the teachers are good, the organization is good, and because it is clean.
4/12/2005staffNautilus middle is a school with many children attending it. Many of the students attending Nautilus middle school are students that want to learn. Many just are looking for love and attention and the only way that they are going to be able to get is if we the parents help the school to make it a better place so that the students that attend Nautilus middle school say that they want there brothers and sisters to go there and while they where there they enjoyed it.
1/31/2005former studentThis school is terrible. Teachers have no control over their classes, and there are fights constantly. I'm happy I transferred schools.
12/13/2004parentMy family moved into this school district 2 years ago and my daughter started 6th grade at Nautilus in the middle of the school year. I cannot tell you enough how welcoming the administration was to our daughter and really got her up to speed quickly. Her principal and home room teacher when above and beyond. My daughter continues to thrive in this school.
8/4/2004studentI went to this school last year as a 7th grader. This shcool is HORRIBLE. The principle is super nice...but has no control over the school. There are fights everyday, the teachers are bad (mine were terrible). I felt that I didn't learn anything. The only kids that got attention were the kids whose parents alomost lived in the school and basicly got the grades for the kids. The kids are discusting. Hate to say it...but so were my friends, they would pierce them selves during class, that is if they ever attended it. Kids are constantly skipping class. I hate it. Thats why I really would not like to attend this school ever ever again.
9/9/2003parentThe new principal, Dr. Welker. is fantastic. He has 'raised the bar' academically for all students.
