6/20/2012parentMoved to GA from Cali this past September and I'm happy to say that i am very satisfied with this school. The only issue that I have is with my daughters old counselor, this past semester I found out that she was about to retire which means she didn't give my newly enrolled daughter enough time to talk about her senior year which is coming up. So as of right now we are still scrambling to get it together.
9/5/2011otherBased on the Shiloh High School accountability report on the Gwinnett County Public Schools website ACT reading and math scores have plummeted since 2005. Shiloh ACT scores are below the national average, the Gwinnett County average, and the state of GA average. The number of students taking and successfully completing Advanced Placement courses has dropped like a stone since 2005. It is a very dismal report card for Shiloh HS. It is not racial, it is bad bad bad test scores and getting worse test scores. Shiloh HS might be a place where students and parents enjoy themselves and feel warm and fuzzy, but the school based on academics is a failure factory. Research the facts and make your own evaluation based on reality not dreams.
7/17/2011parentI feel that when my grandsons entered SHS the parents no longer had control over what happened to their child academically. Both of my grandsons were given 2-3 physical education classes during one semester. They were not allowed to change the classes. They trusted their counselor to lead them in the right direction. I tried to contact the counselor several times by phone, she never returned mycalls. The parent portal is good for getting grades, however, there is not a way to contact teachers if you have a question about your child. Another topic is: poor communtcation between teacher and parents until it is too l;ate. There is a parent teacher meeting-I did not find out about it until I received a newsletter one month later. Children are expected to be responsible and the communication is between the child and the teacher and/or counselor.
6/6/2011parentWe are incredibly pleased with Shiloh. In the early 1990s our oldest daughter graduated there and is now a Chemical Engineer with a major company. She got straight into a highly competitive BS of Chemical Engineering Program and now has a MBA also. We left the metro for a decade when my husband was transferred up north. We moved to Cobb County for the first two years we were back (2005 and 2006) then back to Snellville three years ago due to liking Gwinnett County better. Our two younger children are going to Shiloh now and doing very very well and enjoying school very much.
2/12/2011parentAgain I would say the large number of Ivy League admissions coming from Shiloh in very recent years speaks for itself. This is unheard of even among the pricey private schools in Atlanta.
2/12/2011parentMy Dentist is black and he graduated from Shiloh and he sends his kids there. I am white and I send my kids there after I found out he does. We have a weekend house there and a home in Atlanta due to my husbands disdain for commuting. So I had a choice and Shiloh was it. We are very pleased. Several of the kids have one and some two European parents and it is fun to chat with them at functions. I am told the Elementary School is good too.
3/19/2010studentThis school produces many students that excel and go to top universities each year.It is a school that gets a bad reputation because it is predominately black.I think this rating is given because of that and it only tarnishes the reputation of this excellent institution.
1/5/2010studentI lived in the Shiloh community for 6 years from grade 6-11 before having to move recently. This school, as life in general, is as good as you make it; I had a worthwhile education because I worked to have that kind of education. Those that say it is a bad school made it bad for themselves. A majority of students are friendly and the diversity is truly prevalent. There are amazing teachers as well, I learned a lot from most of the teachers I had. I enjoyed my time at Shiloh and I find myself missing it. All in all, Shiloh is a great school that is trying to make itself better with improvements on different areas. Class of 2010! I hope this helped.
9/30/2009studentThis is my first year at Shiloh, and I am very pleased with the school year thus far. People have been very friendly to me and my friends. Everyone I know that is attending or has attended Shiloh High School has had an overall good experience, with the positives outweighing the negatives. Shiloh is a good school, and I think most of the other students would agree.
9/28/2009parentShiloh is a great school. I had one child to Graduate in 2004 and I have two Seniors presently attending. Parent involvement is the key.
9/24/2009parentI have been in the Shiloh Community for 13 years and have been a Very Involved Parent. I know this has a direct impact on my comfort level with the school and its challenges as well as famaliarizes me with its successes. I know SHS has opportunites for improvement but the issues at the school are not any greater than at other HS the issues are far greater than SHS. It is interesting that the ratings of the schools have a direct relationship with the ratial makeup of the school. It is not time to pull the race card but just check ourselves realistically. Community support in the higher rated schools is a major component.
9/23/2009studentI am a well-known student in the class of 2010. Yes, the school has seen some extreme demographic change, but a school is still what you make of it. Shiloh students are still competitive academically and athletically. We have students (this year and in the last two years) who have made perfect scores on AP, SAT, and ACT exams and have been given $450,000 military scholarships. Each year, a handful of students matriculate to some of the nation's most prestigious colleges, such as Harvard (2009), Yale (2006, 2006), Princeton (2008), Cornell (2007), Duke (2008), and the list goes on (not to mention students who were accepted but chose not to attend). If this doesn't speak to the idea that good things can happen at any school, then I don't know what can. Shiloh can be a school just as good as any other if people just believe in it.
7/21/2009parentMy child just graduated from Shiloh High, class of 2009. This school has done nothing but turn for the worst within the past four years. The schools administration is all talk no action. They constantly threaten students with disciplinary action and turn around and don't do a thing. Kids are constantly roaming the hallways and these are upperclassmen! They talk to teachers and administrators any way they want as if they're friends. This school went from a descent well know school to a ghetto cry for help. Its not even about the school being mostly black, they just simply do not care. I wouldn't recommend this school to a soul until they turn themselves back around.
7/15/2009parentShiloh High is a great school.. Parenst just have to be involved as they would in any school. I think the bad rap comes from it's diversity. We love it and have 1 child who will attends and 3 who will attend Shiloh with pride.
7/14/2009parentMy son is a senior at Shiloh High School. I'm an involved parent. You get positive results when you stay in close communication with your student and teachers.
7/11/2009parentMy son graduated from Shiloh High school this year - 2009 and enjoyed his high school years there; and I as an involved parent felt supported by the staff and administration. As previous parents have mentioned, the school has approved greatly since Dr. Tatum's arrival. Parents get involved.
5/27/2009parentMy oldest sos an upcoming senior. He has been at Shiloh all 3 years of high school. I can see a big improvement since Dr. Tatum has been there. I am informed on a regular basis of my son's grades. My son takes AP and honors classes and has enjoyed being a student there. He also plays sports as well. As for the parent who is complaining about the football dues, I agree that $500 is alot of money, but the athletics programs don't get any money from the county. We (the parents and community) have to furnish and provide everything for these programs. I know there are fund raisers that the touchdown club do to help offset the dues (I've done them before). Get some local businesses as sponsors and get the community involved! I do feel that more parental involvement is needed for all aspects at this school.
4/30/2009parentneed more parent involvement
4/14/2009parentI have two kids that attend Shiloh. Although this is their first year there they are doing well. Coming from a Dekalb County School you can sure see the difference. The teachers keep me informed of my sons academic performance constantly and I like their football program. Can't say I agree with the fees though. In Dekalb County I only paid $500 for the both of my kids but I Shiloh I have to pay $900, in which they are only giving me $100 discount (Wow!) I do feel like that is way over the top for your child to play football. Maybe I should take it up with the Athlectic Director. What a price to pay(Ridiculous) and this is directed to the Booster Club. You should never put money over talent because you can use more talent. That's why I rate Shiloh a 3.
12/26/2008parentShiloh High School has some major problems. The principle seems to be more inclined to making this school a sports facility, than an educational institution. The school seems to place the students attending the facility secondary to private interprise. The school rents out facilities to community organizations and private groups, over the desires of the students whom attend the school and their needs. The parents are also a concern, however this also seems to be the same growning trend in just about every school system, not just Shiloh, it is called lack of empathy. School security at the facility is non-existent. it seems to be easier for the administration to verbally threathen all of the students, than to take action against the ones causing the problems. The teachers lack the support of the administration when it comes to disciplining students in their cleassrooms - their hands seem to be tied ..
11/5/2008parentShiloh is a good school. We moved from the Shiloh district to the Brookwood district. My daughter is gifted and preferred Shiloh. She said Brookwood was too crowded and the quality of teaching at Shiloh was better. I put in a request to have her moved and she is currently at Shiloh. She is extremely happy at this school and just took her SAT's which she said were 'easy'. She said there were very few questions that she did not know the answers for. She has attended high school at other schools but has truly blossomed here. Thank you to the staff of Shiloh High School!
6/16/2008studentShiloh High is not a bad school. Since Dr. Tatum has come in, there has been a lot of changes. Those are for the better. Before her we had at least three to four fights a week. Now that rarely happens. Test scores has improved since the last year also. Though the football team could use som work. I don't know what other students and some parents are talking about when they say that there are a lot of disruptions in their classes and teachers aren'y handling the situation. I don't know who those teachers are because all the one that i have had so far would not put up with it and was quick to remove them from class.
4/23/2008studentI am a sophomore at Shiloh and overall the school is pretty good. there are not alot of discipline problems in the school. I just wish Shiloh had more sports for females. The test scores have gotten better over the years. Dr. Tatum is a good principle for this school. I am kinda happy to be a general.
1/4/2008parentShiloh is a pretty good school. If your child wants to learn, the help is there. If you have a problem child, the school may not be the kind of school that you would be looking for. There are only so much a teacher can do, and there are so many teachers at Shiloh who can't run there classroom. They tolerate the disruptions. Which makes it hard for the kids who want to learn.
10/24/2007parentThe atmosphere at this school seems to get worse every year - the administration either doesn't want to handle or refuses to acknowledge the huge discipline problems here. Kids disrupt classes, and teachers can't teach over the chaos, students who want to learn can't because of the chaos - or they are targeted by the troublemakers, and are intimidated into not actively participating in class. The low expectations have led to low quality, and that has very negatively affected the whole Shiloh district, not only in education and the schools, but in quality of life for all the residents in Shiloh district. A really good school could help revitalize this area - just imagine!
7/22/2007former studentAs a recent graduate of Shiloh, I can easily say there was no school that I would have rather attended! Shiloh's cultural diversity has rapidly changed over the past years for the better. Students have the opportunity to meet and learn from others with very unique backgrounds and cultures. The administration has had a drastic overhaul with the new principal, Dr Tatum. Under her guidance discipline issues have gone down and test scores have goon up! I am proud to call myself a Shiloh High School General!
5/21/2007parentMy daughter is a rising Junior at Shiloh and although the schools has its problems. They are very diligent about changing the problems. They are on the right track to making Shiloh the best school ever. They handle diversity well. The students get along well. Their is not clicks of all whites or all blacks.. They mingle well together. Which is nice especially in Georgia.
11/3/2006studentI'm a senior at Shiloh High School, and yes it has its problems but what school doesn't.
9/3/2006parentI have have sent 3 children to Shiloh High School. 2 have graduated and are attending major universities (Big 10 & SEC), my youngest child is a currently a junior at Shiloh. I have found that you get out of any school exactly what you are willing to put into it. Parental involvement and support is the key to any really great high school program - academic or extracurricular. People can hide behind the excuse of a 'changing' community or culture for not getting involved but then they short-change their children and set a poor example for them. The higher the expectations a community has for its schools and the willingness to support their schools with their time, talents and, let's face it, money is imperative. Shiloh has some involved parents but we could stand a couple of hundred more. We have high hopes for our new principal, Dr. Tatum.
8/11/2006studentShiloh High is an okay school, however, some teachers are way to leaniant. They are to strict when unecessary and not strict enough when it is necessary. As for as academics they are okay, but again not too great. If you want your child to be in a safe, educated school with the correct discipline and school spirit, Shiloh is not the school. Even the football team needs work.
7/31/2006parentMy son will be a senior this year and I am thankful that this is the last year for him. Shiloh has gotten worse each year. There have been a few times that I have gone to his counsler and the only thing that she would tell me is to look for help outside the school system. They are suppose to be there to help. There are drug problems and kids skipping school. What happened to random searches like we use to have. There is no one monitoring the parking lots. Last year if I had to check my son out fo school, kids were coming through the doors using fowl language. Where is the guidence. My middle schooler will not be attending Shiloh.
5/31/2006parentThis school has turned out to be the worse. This was my childs first and last year there. She is only a freshmen yet she will not be returning. It was so obvious that the administration cares only about dicipline. There is no communication between them and there are excuses made for blatant mistakes. The school ask for parental involvment, however when given several contact #'s and asked for routine updates. There are little to no responses. When responses came they were late and after the fact. Emails are not returned in a timely manner and I even had a teacher tell me that her class size was too large to sufficiently check attendance of every student daily. There are some good teachers however it is too much of a hassel to get the administration to care enough about your childs safety and education to even bother.
5/12/2006studentI am also a student at Shiloh High School. All of these parents are concerned about Shiloh's so-called 'downfall.' Also referring to all the 'changes' Shiloh is experiencing currently. Shiloh is going through a lot of changes, but they're not all negative. Our demographics may have shifted, but that hasn't lessened the quality of the school. There are still plenty of students willing to learn and also participate in extracurricular activities, and it saddens me to see all of these parents thinking so poorly of Shiloh.
5/9/2006studentI am a 10th grader at Shiloh High School. My family and I just relocated from Grand Rapids,MI and my mother and I are extremely happy with our decision. I have found Shiloh to be an excellent school in a number of different ways, and I have also received many wonderful oppotunities since my arrival. I notice that several reviews state issues concerning behavior problems, but I believ that starts at home and the teacheres are doing their best to pick up where parents are lacking regarding the discipline of their children. It's not an easy task and I commend the staff at Shiloh for their efforts in reviving Shiloh's once excellent reputation. However, Shiloh has several aspects that may be considered excellent such as their amazing athletic teams! Several of our graduating seniors are leaving on scholarships for at least 5 different sports. That is absolutely wonderful!Long live Shiloh!
4/20/2006former studentI recently graduated from Shiloh, and I too have noticed the steady downfall of the school. Fights in the commons were an everyday occurance, more and more students were skipping school, cars were vandalized (mine included), and the level of respect for the faculty dropped significantly. It is true, however, that there are still a handful of great teachers there (along with Kruskamp), but most don't teach because they love it and want to make a difference. When I first came to the Shiloh community in the 6th grade, it was the place to be. By my senior year, many of my peers had moved to Grayson and Loganville to escape the changes. I don't blame them.
2/11/2006parentShiloh was once a great school, now the teachers have really know control. Even though some students are at school to learn no attitude is given to them. The a great handful of the teachers are there for a paycheck and not to help the children. This school has given more light to students clothing some such as slippers that are harmless rather then the education which we send are students there to receive. The parents are trying to do what we can.
12/7/2005parentAs a parent of a Shiloh High School Junior I think this school has declined greatly since my child started this school in 9th grade. We have been in the Shiloh District for 20 years, it wasn't till over the last few years that the school took a turn for the worse. It's really bad when the teachers do not have any control over the students and they disrupt classes daily.
11/5/2005parentWe believe the teacher quality is outstanding at Shiloh. If I where asked today if the Shiloh Cluster schools are schools of excellence my answer is No. A lot has changed in our area and I believe it's not for the good. Teachers should not have to deal with discipline problems on such a daily basis.
10/4/2005studentAs a student at Shiloh, I believe that this school is awesome! Although it is declining in its 'excellence,' the diversity is great and I'm meeting and learning about different people that I would not have normally talked to. Shiloh has gotten a bad reputation, but there are still many kids (such as me) who care about learning and are invloved in many activities in the school.
9/13/2005studentI think Shiloh is a Great school with alot of diveristy. I know it has changed over the years but that change is for better. Dr. Kruscamp is doing everything he can to improve the spirits and academics of our school today and I think he is doing a good job on it. As the Junior class president I think this schoolhas alot going for us and I think that this is should be rated 5 stars just like our imblum incrusted on everyone's agenda book.
8/23/2005studentI have been in Shiloh since 6th grade. Currently I am a senior. Every year, Shiloh has gotten worse and worse. Teachers have left for better schools.
7/2/2005studentI have gone to shiloh since 5th grade and i am currently in the 11th grade and wow have things changed. I think that our school has really declined in excellence. When i first arrived i was 1 out of very few african americans. At first i didnt like that but soon i adjusted. Since shiloh has changed in diversity the school has really declined because of students lack of motivation to be involved. They just come to school and THATS IT.I have seen many good friends leave shiloh for way better school and i dont think thats such a bad idea. Even though the principle tries his best things arent that great. Even though every school has problems shiloh is looked upon very badly by neighboring schools. Which is bad. Shiloh students should step it up and get more involved to represent our school Right.
5/3/2005parentAs a student and a leader at Shiloh High School I can attest that this Gwinnett School of Excellence lives up to the ranks of 5-Star Generals ... which its mascot portrays. Shiloh, in my opinion is a school embracing diversity and aiding each and every student. Relentless pursuit of learning is the mission at Shiloh and that mission is upheld each day. The principal displays all the qualities and skills needed to fulfill the requirements of the community. I hope only more success is in the future of this flouishing Gwinnett School of Excellence!
2/19/2005parentAs stated, Shiloh has gone through some big changes. In my opinion, the biggest one is the block schedule. It does not work for the gifted students. My daughter was an example of this when she had to drop two gifted classes when they did not fit into her schedule and take a college prep and become an office aid because that was all that was left. I was told by an assistant principal that this happens alot because there are only four periods and not enough kids are taking the high level classes so they don't offer as many. Many really good teachers left. For this reason, my last child is now in private school. We still live in the community and enjoy the diversity. We just felt that the block did not work if you wanted to take AP classes and my child does.
2/18/2005parentI have a daughter attending Shiloh High School. I appreciate the opportunities students are given to achieve in many different areas, academically, musically, athletically, and socially. The diversity of the school has enhanced the learning. The students learn to accept differences and appreciate other cultures. This is a life lesson they are able to learn in high school. The teachers and administrators take time to know the students and encourage them to achieve at the highest level. There is alot of positive that happens at Shiloh High School that needs to be heard in our community.
2/8/2005parentI have had children in the Shiloh cluster for over 17 years and have seen things change a great deal. Not all of these changes are bad....many are simply reflective of the world around us. The one issue I have with Shiloh is not unique to Shiloh, but rather an issue of Gwinnett County and all public education. As dicipline problems become a bigger and bigger issue for administrators and teachers, the good students get lost. In attempting to control behavior, all students are treated as if they are potentially behavior problems. This discourages the best kids from trying so hard to be on their best behavior when they are not recognized for it and in fact are treated the same those who are not model students. These kids feel like prisoners who have been falsely imprisoned.
1/20/2005former studentAs a proud graduate of Shiloh and now a recent graduate from a top university starting my own realestate business - Shiloh gave me the tools to excel - The counselors assisted me in choosing the right classes and the teachers are willing to give extra help if you ask for it or show to them that you want it. Alot of times my friends and I would stay after school to work math and science problems. The sports offered are great - Pollack is putting Shiloh on the map - take advantage of what the school offers - the new facilities are awesome - make friends with other students - the USA is a melting pot and Shiloh will always be apart of my life and a top Gwinnett School.
1/17/2005former studentI graduated here in 2002 and since I have gone back most of the parent involvement has depleated or the ones that are helping are beyond rude. Other then the students and parents that teachers are as nice as they can be. They are trying their hardest to be positive about a not so good situation
12/15/2004parentChange is inevitable,How do you embrace it. My family is a part of that change. Prior to moving to Georgia, we did the research and found that 'Gwinnett' was the place to be and 'Shiloh' was the school. People tend to fear what they don't understand. This is a great opportunity for everyone in the Shiloh community. We have an opportunity to learn from each other, in an effort to build a better community. The key to those building blocks is the diversity that now exists. This school and community need your support. Your children and mine need our support, guidance & loyalty to prepare them for the world they will inherit. Don't ever forget 'Teachers are Parents & Parents are Teachers'. Get Involved.
11/14/2004studentAll these people who say Shiloh has changed in the last couple of years are only trying to say that it's getting to 'black' for them and that's what is causing these people to move away, not it changin for the worse, but not to how you like it. I don't love Shiloh, but I don't hate it. I do not care that more black people are coming to the school. It's seems like that's all you all's problem is, I just voiced it for you.
10/13/2004parentI rate this school very low. I have a child that is in Special ED, that wants to learn more but, have no teacher support at Shiloh.
9/25/2004parentI have 2 children that have graduated from Shiloh and a 9th and 11th grader. This school has changed so much from a few years ago. There is absolutely no school spirit and the students of different races are not coming together. A lot of the teachers and coaches are transferring when they can. I also feel very sad that my younger children will not have the same experience their older siblings had. The principal is the one good thing about Shiloh. I think he's trying his hardest to turn things around.
9/4/2004parentI have two sons that have graduated from Shiloh High School and one daughter in the 10th grade. Over the past 8 years I have seen changes at Shiloh that have caused many friends and neighbors to move away. When we moved to this cluster, we planned on staying in one place so our children would grow up and attend schools with a comunity focus. Shiloh has lost that focus. Our community is on a down hill slide and its sad to see it happen. I feel my daughter is getting short changed compared to the atmosphere her brothers enjoyed while at Shiloh.
8/1/2004former studentI graduated from Shiloh 3 years ago and will graudate from a 4-year college in 2 semesters. I believe that by graduating from Shiloh I gained a lot of opportunities to succeed. There are a number of extracurricular activities for students, but they have to go out and do them. No one is going to just sign you up. I participated in so many activities that I continue to do it in college and it has helped my grades tremendously. Shiloh is a wonderful school with caring teachers who just need to be asked for help. They will point you in the right direction. I still go there to talk to my 'old' teachers if I just want to say hey or I need to talk. As the money goes, it's Gwinnett county and there is money to be found. Don't expect that everything in life is going to be free.
7/25/2004studentI attend Shiloh High School and someone said that the school is no longer becoming equally raced. The school was once majority white, and now there are many more black students, I am a black student and maintain a 4.0 GPA. Everyone is given the same opportunity, unless you don't make yourself known. Some of the school seems to be racially bias(NOT everyone, just few), but has challenging curriculum to make students think. Shiloh needs to have more positive changes, such as extracurricular activities and parent involvement. I agree...Shiloh constantly asks for money.
4/18/2004studentI have one of my own children in this school as well as my niece. In general it is a safe school but all schools have their highs and their lows. The material that they teach is very good. All of the teachers for the most part are willing to take the time out to explain things that the kids have trouble with. The only thing that may be troublesome is the money they ask for. It almost seems like every two weeks they are asking for some kind of money. Besides this, Shiloh is a good school.
2/6/2004studentI personally think that Shiloh is a great school. We have an excellent principal and overall the best part about Shiloh is Chorus. Im very lucky to go out and represent an awesome school and department at the GMEA festival.
1/14/2004parentracial difference has caused alot of parents to consider moving or atleast getting our kids out of the Shiloh schools.(elementary, middle, high)
8/22/2003parenta good school, but not enough dedication from staff in assisting parents with at risk children. the race ratio is quickly changing in this area, as that is not neccesarily bad, i feel the not so successful and shining students often are ignored.
