My child's teacher has talked down to me several times in front of my child and is not willing to work with us or compromise in a professional way. I would not recommend anyone sending their children here if you have the choice. Of course you can volunteer but I never felt welcomed and have never been asked to volunteer for anything so I got the impression volunteers weren't really wanted. |
| 5/24/2012 | parent | My son just graduated from 1st grade today. My son has medical issues that affect his behaviors. His first grade teacher, the people that they assigned to help him throughout the day, his principal, the student services coordinator, his special ed teacher, all of his support staff have made this possible. I was afraid that he wouldn't have been able to function, but he did!! Their care, dedication, and support have made it possible to succeed. They have provided a psychologist, occupational and behavioral therapy, counseling, everything that they could to help him. This school FOUGHT for him when I know other people wouldn't have. The school isn't perfect, but I will say that I couldn't have asked for a better experience. |
| 2/14/2012 | parent | I wish it were possible to not give this school any stars! It has been nothing, but a horrible experience from the start. It took them over a month to get my daughter's records from a previous school and find her a class. Since she started there has been nothing, but issues when communicating with her teacher. I have experienced these as well as my daughter. The teacher don't seem to have control over her class room and seems to punish all the children for what one does. She has blown loud whistles in my daughters ear and often ignores when my child is trying to tell her something important. The teacher has even justified other students bullying my child and seems to implicate that my child deserves to be bullied. I have a very soft spoken little girl who has a very kind heart and this school has done nothing, but brake her spirit and take the joy out of her education. It is the worst school I have ever seen. My child will not be going back! |

I do not expect for schools to be totally responsible for educating the children, parents have to be very involved as well. This school has not failed in educating my children and giving them the basis for success for future and higher education. I must admit that not all teachers are equal, but if parental involvement occurs, you can assess if the teacher is a good match for your child to learn. |
| 2/23/2010 | parent | My daughter has been going to this school for 2 years now. As a parent, we are very pleased with what she has learned and experienced from this school. I think it all depends on teachers and how much parents are involved, but my daughter has been involved with a lot of school activities as well as academics. Most kids are well displined wtih good behavior. I just wish more parents would get involved to make this school better. |
| 6/23/2008 | parent | My son is a very proud student of this school. The things he liked about it was the small class size and help and encouragement he got from teachers and staff. He enjoyed going to Camp Erdman on one of his excursions which is his most memorable moment. The things I like about this school is you don't have to worry about traffic, parking, picking up and dropping your child. Where as other schools have multi tracks and you can't take a vacation because their on vacation half of the time due to the rotation of the track schedule. I like the fact that this is a small school and the staff is very friendly, I have no regrets about this school. Parents, it's up to you to find different ways of encouraging child and keeping them interested. |
| 5/20/2008 | parent | The NCLB laws have made all public schools cut back on imaginative and creative areas due to the concentration on the core subjects. Barbers Point Elementary students, however, have had art entries in art contests, participate in Artists in the School program every year, have continued with their traditional Art Day every year for students in grades K-2 and finally have organized and executed a beautiful May Day performance where every grade level participates including pre-school! The only other thing they could do better is provide a talented and gifted program that is separate from the classroom and have a full time technology teacher. Granted, it is not in the most desirable area and air conditioning is badly needed but I am a fan of the school and its staff. |

| 9/27/2007 | parent | Barber's Point is the only accredited elementary school on the island. Their staff is phenomenal and they go the extra mile to make the school a better one. They have many inter-grade meetings to ensure that each grade level is ready to move forward. The lack of parental involvement in a child's education is unfortunately a major factor in that child's success as well. Once more parents realize this, more children will improve. Barber's Point educates all classes and all races effectively. The school is the home to the NASA Challenger Center as well as a nice grassy playground and play area. The library is top notch and the school is working toward improvement and progress. This is the school where you want your children to be!!! |
| 6/1/2005 | parent | I am more than pleased that my daughter is a Barbers Pt Jet! She had previously attended elementary schools in Monterey, Ca., and in Whitmore village in Wahiawa, HI. We moved (on our own expenses) to the Kapolei are just so our daughter could receive a better education. Millilani schools are great; sure, they are also overcrowded and nearly impossible to get into. Barber's Pt is also (as far as I know) the only mainland accredited elementary school on the island! That speaks volumes! |
| 1/31/2005 | parent | I called the school months ago to see the school. Never returned my call. I got in touch with them finally, they said I could come today for 15min. To many students to teacher. I felt like I was a student and not an adult while speaken to the teacher. I called back after my visit and inquired about seeing another class. I was told that the other teachers teach the same thing and the classes are identical. I was also questioned if I was military and if I would be transferring soon. I thought this is a public school. My final word is if you care about your childs education don't send them there. Very unprofessional from the secretary to the teacher. Glad to see our tax dollars being spent wisely. |
