| 6/21/2008 | parent | Our family's experience with Hiawatha Middle School has been a nightmare. Both the teachers and the administration have no clue how to properly handle children with disabililties. It appears to us that the administration would rather send them to the school's special 're-education' center, i.e. STYLE program or just plain kick them out, even if the child's offense was clearly a manifestation of their disability. Shame on the administration and school board of Hiawatha, Kansas. |

| 6/20/2005 | parent | The 2005 8th grade class of Hiawatha Middle School achieved that state standard of excellence in reading this year. The same class of 8th graders had 12% of the class fail to graduate and nearly 30% of the class did not get to go on their end of year field trip to Worlds of Fun because of failing grades. I find these numbers in sharp contrast to each other and you would not even think they could be the same group of kids. The principal adjusted the circumulum of HMS to teach only those things tested on the state test - leaving the students to learn for themselves the rest of the lessons. The new history teacher in particular seemed to fail the students more than most - but his failures went unnoticed by his friend the principal. If you allow your child to attend HMS - make the teachers teach. |
