| 12/10/2011 | other | The teaching is great, the student life and apparel they were is extremely inappropriate. I extremely agree on the leadership one... |
| 6/13/2011 | parent | Definitely has weak leadership and poor behavior from staff and students alike. Lots of drugs; I regret sending my daughter here. |
| 2/9/2011 | parent | For a school within the Birmingham Public Schools system I feel Derby could do so much better. They do have some excellent teachers that really care about the kids but they also have some that should not even be teaching. I once heard a teacher scream at the kids that was uncalled for. I agree with the review on the poor leadership. Middle School is one of the toughest times for some kids and I feel the leadership in this school doesn't require enough from its staff. You also can do well in this school if you are a student who excels but sorry if your child is an average or below average student. |
| 1/24/2011 | parent | Derby is an amazing school that has exceeded our expectation. My daughter transition from a Montessori school. Derby has a very strong academic program, and a variety other activities to help the child develop a strong personality. The staff is amazing! Very caring, and very attentive to children needs. They created a very productive environment for learning and child development. Highly recomend this school! |
| 1/12/2011 | parent | I feel that the leadership is weak at this school. At this age, our children would truly benefit from having a strong, positive leader who requires excellence of staff and students alike.I believe that the school has good academic structure, but lacks the proper personnel to make a good impact. I have witnessed so many incidents where the staff just cannot handle the situations at school and either completely lose their composures or ignore it all together. It would be nice to see someone come in there and clean up the whole operation, get rid of the scandals and the scandalous, and bring in principals and teachers who don't only "need a job," but are passionate about contributing to the students' success. |
| 12/9/2010 | other | This school is not good at all, i used to go there and the teachers were not nice and did not provide much help. |
| 11/30/2010 | parent | This school is completely full of uncaring teachers, no authority, and inappropriate behavior from children of all grades. Students are not pushed academically, and there are pregnancy scares each year. Middle school is supposed to prepare a child for high school, and Derby doesn't even come close to shaping kids up to a high standard. I am very disappointed in this low-quality school in such an amazing school district. |
| 4/24/2010 | parent | The staff at Derby treat students with respect and sensitivity. The curriculum is designed to give students the tools for learning: the ability to be organized and to develop an individual approach to completing tasks, strategies for research and presentation, and the freedom to be creative. The school is attentive to the needs of students educationally and emotionally. Derby knows how to make learning fun. |
| 11/28/2009 | parent | My child is a sixth grader at Derby. The principal and teachers go above and beyond to welcome incoming students and ensure a successful transition to MS. Great extracurriculars. Challenging academically, but not too overwhelming. |
| 12/29/2008 | other | THis is a great school. My child loves it there. |
| 3/5/2008 | parent | This is a great school! The teachers are great and my son loves the engineering program....only way it could be better is if it had a school baseball team |
| 2/14/2007 | student | I am only in my first year at Derby, but I think that it is the best school ever!! The teachers are so nice and everyone is friendly. The elective choices are awesome. We have stuff like Applied Engineering Technology and Fashion Engineering, and 4 different musical choices. We do get a fair amount of homework, but that's ok. The activities we do in school are fun, but we learn something while doing them. You can participate in the yearly spelling bee. Also, we go on a lot of fun field trips, like a few months ago the sixth grade went to Chicago to see the King Tut exhibit. We all had a lot of fun. WE also have a lot of sports that canybody can participate in, like swimming, volleyball, basketball, and lots more!!!!! GO DERBY DRAGONS!!!!!!!!!!!! |
| 11/14/2006 | student | This is my third year at DMS and I would HIGHLY recommened this school to anyone. I know for a fact that the teachers do care about the students and do as much as they can to encourage and help them. And the elective choices are awesome! Two thumbs WAY up for the DERBY DRAGONS!!! |
| 11/5/2006 | student | DMS is amazing, I am in my 2nd year there and I love it. Everyone has friends. We even have a fashion egineering class. Boys even participate in that. Every class has the best time. Even if your not friends with someone, you are in the class you have with them. |
| 10/31/2006 | parent | I am extremely disappointed with this school.Middle school is transition from a single teacher to a less structured environment. Many kids have a tough time becoming organized and getting homework done etc. This school has no means for parents to keep track of their childs progress. Most other districts have weekly progress reports or on line grade tracking. Also PTSA meetings are held during the day when working parents cannot attend. I am shocked that one of the top districts in Michigan the parents have less resources than the Romeo or Dexter school districts. |
| 4/22/2006 | parent | My son moved into this school from Highland Park Middle School in Dallas,Tx in 7th grade. Derby was miserable compared to his old school. While there were a handful of teachers that seemed to actually care how well the students grasped the material being taught, the overall attitude was very apathetic. I was extremely disappointed in this school. |
| 9/2/2004 | former student | Derby middle school is the greatest middle school, you learn so much, the teachers are awesome and the students are friendly! |
| 8/10/2004 | former student | I attended 3 years at DMS, it was such an awesome fun school, the people are very welcoming and the teachers are great. A+ highly reccomend this school. |
