| 10/17/2012 | parent | I have to agree with the last post. My son attended Metro a couple of years ago for middle school. His experience was outstanding. I believed the samething would happen for my other son who is in the lower ele. program. Totally different experience. In fact when I bring information to the attention of the school leader understanding that she is the instructional leader of the school, she down plays it or sends the concerns to her Dean; to me she is unwilling to address the issues that are going on. Now Mrs. Kouba was a great leader she was interested and valued the ideas and concerns of parents. Mrs. Wildfong is total opposite it doesn't appear that she is concern or does look at parents as an important stakeholder in her school. It is my belief that she should be more personable and follow up with concerns. I also believe that the expectations of student learning has become watered down. New teachers that are not familiar with the philosphy of the school is evident. Now it seems that the middle school hasn't changed Mr. Ward is still there and he demonstrates great leadership. However with the change in leadership the school at least the lower ele. has its challenges. |
| 10/3/2012 | parent | My daughters teacher is nice and the school is god and I thing the kids will have good charactor from what I see so far.The down fall of the school is the principle Mrs.Shelli Wildfong. She is a bully and very petty and controlling and they school fires her I would give it five stars.Think twice about this school just because if you have ANY complaints about how they do things may it be wrong or right your opinion will not be well recieved. |
| 2/8/2012 | parent | My Kindergartener and 7th grader currently attend Metro and WE love this school. The staff runs the school very, very well...from the parking lot to the inside operations. My 5 year old never wants to miss school even when ill and my 7th grader comes home and often says she's had an awesome day at school. The work is challenging (I often have to go online and brush up on Math skills and other areas to help the 7th grader with HW). The Middle School Dean is awesome (stays on the kids about doing things appropriately). I often say that the kids are very sheltered because they bcan't get away with much. Overall I would strongly recommend METRO . |

| 6/6/2011 | parent | My child is graduating the 8th grade from Metro this year and has attended since Kindergarten. My daughter is currently attending. There are some likes and dislikes as with most schools. The principal is great. My son was being bullied and it was taken seriously, handled by the end of the day without any reprecussions on my son by the other students. Also, the child who bullied him came to me and apologized and we haven't had any other issue with him. The biggest problem are the parents who want the school to raise their kids and don't take responsibility for their childs bad behavior and aren't present to help out in the school to see what is really going on. The responsibility doesn't lie just in the school. I have volunteered since Kindergarten and ALWAYS see the same parents volunteer. It's sad because it is a school that WANTS the parents to come and be present and the parents want their kids to get the excellent education they receive but wont come help at school or support their child and trust me there are many opportunities to do so. Most of the schools in our area are doing poorly so parents need to be more accountable instead of pointing fingers. Communication works! |
| 3/25/2011 | parent | I could not disagree with the last post more. This school is awesome! The new administration has worked hard to instill a sense of family at this school. Did the previous parent even bother to discuss their "issues" with the classroom teacher? I love Metro and it provides a great learning environment for all children. |
| 3/10/2011 | parent | We have had the worst experience at this school. They have the worst leadership I have ever seen in a school. We are pulling our children out with only 3 months left in the year. We have had numerous problems and meetings about the bully issue at this school. Nothing has changed. Both my children have had incidents with bullies. The principal is new and she doesn't seem to have the leadership skills to conduct the school appropriately. When we tried to address an issue that we thought was important, the Dean freaked out and refused to listen. But when the other couple that was there because their son was also being bullied, she listened to them about the SAME issue we tried to bring up. Good Luck if you try this school. |
| 11/28/2010 | parent | I just recently transferred my children this school year to Metro Academy from a school that's literally next door to my home. In the beginning they didn't care for it as any new kid, but as time escalated they've grown to like it. My daughter whose in 5th grade is participating and very competitive about learning more now. My son whose in 6th grade loves being in the band in which the other school don't have. I as a parent loves the challenges in education my children are facing. My son asked me for help for with his homework for the first time in yrs. I know hes learning something. The teachers are great. The parking lot staff are patient and considerate. I strongly recommend Metro Academy. |
| 3/31/2010 | parent | This school is wonderful!! The staff is great and they DO truly care about their students. Many parents don't see each teacher and their interaction with their students. These teachers and other staff members are more valuable than most parents can appreciate. Take responsibility as a parent and don't put everything on the school. Metro Rocks!! |
| 3/26/2010 | parent | I just read the review posted on March 21 and I couldn't disagree more! I have had my two kids at Metro for 3 years and they have had the best educational experience ever. I have always felt like Metro went above and beyond trying to accomodate my children and their needs. The teachers and staff truly care for children and I wish Metro had a high school! I highly recommend Metro to any parent who wants a great education for their child. -A happy parent |
| 3/21/2010 | parent | I just recently pulled my three children out of metro academy school it was the worst experience me and my children ever had to go thru, the principle was very unpleasent and horrible to deal with in any matter that came to his attention, at this school they made my children feel like they wasnt worthy of being at this scholl because both my boys have learning disabilities my children often came home balling there eyes out telling me they dont care about them and they hate the school , they dont help them at all, it was just a very unorganized school all they care about is there rating and dealing with my children and there needs was not good for them. To all that will ever think about enrolling there child in this school my advice is to rethink it , and make a better choice for your child/children. |
| 10/13/2009 | parent | This school has the best teachers who care about the students. The PTO is great and does many things to take care of the staff. The school offers academics at different levels so no one is left out or left behind. The school offers many afterschool activites, sports, electives and more! |
| 8/23/2009 | parent | I am pleased with the overall size of the classrooms. There are parapros that assist the kindergarten teachers. The public schools cannot turn away students and they have nearly 35 kids to a class without parent helpers or parapros. I know this because we left Garden City Schools for this reason. |
| 6/22/2009 | parent | We're very pleased with Metro it was our son's 1st year there this past school year. He grew socially, behaviorally and academically. We loved his teachers as well. Metro has been a great fit for our son. |
| 5/4/2009 | parent | My son attended Metro from 2nd (when they opened) until he graduated. Based on the extra time and effort taken by both the teaching and Andy Cook my son has been placed in all honors classes in the first two years of high and will be starting duel-enrollment in his junior year. Metro has taught my son self-motivation as well as desire to want to succeed. He has plans to attend MIT which was largely supported by his teachers in the ALPS program. |
| 5/3/2009 | student | I've been at Metro ..since I was in 2nd grade Im in 7th grade now .... the school has absolutely great academics... the thing that I hate is the uniform policy. the have rules on everything . I hate it so much. We have rules on the undershirt we wear . It can't be any color you want ... it has to be either white or navy blue...I think that -that rule is just ridiculous. We have no way to express ourselves, in anyway, shape, or form. I swear , next they are going to put rules on what kind of colors girls' accecories are. To me there academics is awesome ..but everything else isnt. |
| 8/31/2008 | parent | I have been a parent since the opening of the school with my first being in KG. I now have three enrolled. I have been nothing but happy with all areas of the school. I would highly recommend this school to anyone. Recently, National Heritage Academies (the chater managament for this school) out scored Michigan Publis schools in 18 out of 27 areas. My only concern is the level of stress the kids can feel from the expectations placed on them. Class sizes are lager but there are parapros and plenty of parent involvement so I have not ever seen that interfere with my children's education. |
| 7/30/2008 | parent | My kids have go here and for the most part it is a great school. The only concern I have is that I have a friend who is going to have a kindergarten student here this year and there will be 27 or more kids to a class. That is just too many kids for one teacher to handle. I will pull my kids out if this continues. |
| 2/13/2008 | parent | This is my grand children's first year at this school. My son is the children's primary care giver and some nights it gets really difficult to get the heavy home work load done and still get the other home duties done. I have heard the children say that this school is harder but they are learning more, because their last school they really didn't have much homework and they didn't feel they were learning much. I am sure that as hard as it is for them now in the long run they will be much further ahead at Metro CHarter. I appreciate the hard work the staff puts forth for each andevery student. |
| 2/13/2008 | parent | The BEST THING I could have done for my child. |
| 1/11/2008 | parent | I love the academic program this school offers. I have a kindergartner at this school and my child loves Mr. K. The school is challenging and Mr. K. does an outstanding job with everything he does! Way to go Metro. |
| 12/4/2007 | parent | This is a school for parents who are willing to be heavily involved in their child's education |
| 11/19/2007 | parent | I am extremely pleased with Metro Charter, my son is above average academically. I drive 25 minutes to school every day because of the level of education they offer! |
| 10/22/2007 | other | I had two children in this school and I was very active in this school. Last year my son had a very rough group of kids in his class and nothing was being done to prevent these kids from acting out every day. Bad kids are rewarded for their good behavior and good kids are not even noticed. I am glad I pulled my kids from this school they are very happy now and smile every day when they come home. The dicipline at this charter school is not the same for every child and it teaches good kids that you can be bad and not get into trouble if you have a rough home life. |
| 10/4/2007 | parent | Metro is an excellent educational institution. My children have attended for 3 years. They have soared and increased their academic achievements. My daughter is a honor roll student and my son has developed a love for reading because his 2nd grade teachers instilled the love of books in him. The administration works diligently to support teachers and deal with parent concerns. Every problem I have ever had has been handled. I love Metro and don't know what my daughter will do when she leaves for High School. The school has such a familial atmosphere. I love it! Kudos, Metro! |
| 9/11/2007 | parent | Metro Academy is a very good school. I have 2 children and a nephew that attends currently and they love it. Also my other 2 children attended this school and they hated it because they were always being challenged and it was hard for them, coming from a district where they were just a # on count day.I am happy to say that I have 2 well educated respectable young men, who combined home training with the academic and moral growth they obtained at Metro to become high school honor students. I truly believe it takes a village to raise a child. I thank Metro for the education they provided for them and look forward to years to come with my other two.Parents, what you put into your child education is what you will get out of it. Time can never be replaced. |
| 8/2/2007 | parent | Two of my three children attended Metro Charter for 5 years. While I found some of the academics challenging, I was greatly disappointed when my daughter needed an IEP this past year. I don't feel that Metro Charter is equipped adequately to handle the special needs and alternative learning styles of the students with IEP's. In the future, I will consider all possibilities before placing my child in a 'for profit' school. |
| 6/22/2007 | parent | My child has excelled at this school for three short years.Wow! Where has the time gone. She has attended NHA schools since third grade. Now she is on her way to the Middle School. This school has carefully helped her to improve in reading and especially math. I believe this school has everything that a parent is looking for to help their child achieve academic excellence, moral character, and I appreciate the discipline when and if trouble arise. Great school. |
| 5/2/2007 | teacher | This is a great school with a dedicated staff. Two male teachers in lower elementary are both wonderful! |
| 4/30/2007 | parent | I love this school! My son is in Kindergarten and just loves his teacher! The academic program is much more advanced than neighboring districts. The school has a family atmosphere and if you just go and talk to the teachers about any issues rather than I have seen some parents just yelling at them, you will get them resolved. |
| 2/14/2007 | parent | My daughter started and has a speech impairment and they have done wonders. I drive them from canton everyday just to make sure they go here and it has been wonderful. As a parent you must get involved and they have homework every other day at the least but it is really nothing they cannot handle. |
| 10/30/2006 | parent | I have two sons @ Metro and have been there since my oldest was in K(now in 5th). Love the school. It isn't perfect, but no school is and people sometimes expect too much. It is your job as a parent to teach your children the important lessons in life and to be a support for the teachers/staff in their school. Academically my sons are at and above grade level and I am very happy with the progress they have made there. I have had some issues with the school, but when I've gone to the appropriate people those issues have been addressed. The staff consists of dedicated teachers who love what they do (I have found only one exception) and the diversity has been a great asset. They will hold your children accountable for their actions & reward them when good, as we all should, making them responsible citizens. |
| 10/4/2006 | parent | I have 2 son's, 3 nephews and 1 neice at this school. They have attended since the doors open and in grades K-8. This is a wonderful school and I appreciate their focus on academics. The school encourages and thrieves off parental involvement. Many of the teachers are excellent and have a compassion for teaching. The principals and staff are caring and greet every child in the morning when they are dropped off and have daily morning assembly. I have one child in the accelerated ALPS program and another that requires special reading. My children both enjoy the school tremendously. They school has a displinary policy, but I think many parents forget schools are not the primary care giver and should teach their children better respect and discipline so everyone can enjoy the opportunity to learn. Not everything is rosey, but they have structure, guidelines/policies and support. Overall great school. |
| 5/21/2006 | parent | The kids here are out of control. Parent involvement is extremely low. Communication is awful. Events and field trips keep getting cancelled due to lack of participants. This results in the kids feeling hopeless. The parking lot is extremely small. If not for the help of one very faithful parent it would be total chaos in the parking lot. There is little help for kids who are struggling. This school needs after school detention to keep the junior high in shape. All the expelled kids from other schools seem to end up here! This is where most of the problems are found. |
| 4/16/2006 | parent | I have found both my children are a grade ahead of the district schools by one grade. My daughter has attended from K-5th and my son K-1st and I have been very pleased with the school and the dedicated staff. I would recommend the school to anyone who is willing to commit to their children's education. |
| 3/24/2006 | parent | This is the worst school that my 8th grade daughter and i have experienced. The school is suppose to promote morale, integrity, self-control and self esteem, in which this school lacks them all. I have had several distasteful encounters with the staff at metro academy. I believe the teachers and principals are either afraid of the students or they just lack the ability to control their schools environment. My students safety was compromised on several occassions and because they never intervened the situation was taken to other authorities and the board. I am usually a very active parent, but dealing with this school my only activity is praying that my child makes it out in one piece! my advice: enter at your own risk! |
| 3/20/2006 | parent | A wonderful enviroment for my 2 sons. I removed my sons from another school district that has a reputation for strong scores. The greatest benefit for my sons was the basics. This school emphasizes learning the basics and not just taking test. My children's confidence has soared mostly because there is an expectation by the principal and all staff members for each child to succeed. |
| 3/8/2006 | parent | I completely disagree with the previous two reviews of this school. They do cater to special needs children and for those who are wondering, testing for ld services is not done in a school, but at a doctor's office. My child loves this school and so do I. They do not put up with any nonsense from children with behavior issues. If parents would do their job at home and provide a positive, structured environment, a lot of these problems could be corrected. Also, the test scores of surrounding districts are not higher than Metro. It is not always about test scores. The teachers at this school work very hard with the students and care a lot about their success! I would recommend this school to everyone! |
| 11/18/2005 | parent | I have not had very good experience with this school. My daughter attended the Academy for 3 years. Her 1st grade teacher was the only teacher that was decent. We had her assessed by a tutor and found that the school's learning level is behind the publice schools. We were also very dissapointed in the disciplinary actions & feel that children of other races are treated differently which can teach them to be prejudice. We have removed our child & know of other parents who have done the same for similiar reasons. Our child likes the new school much better and so do we. |
| 1/5/2005 | parent | This school most certainly works with those who can't keep up. My daughter is in the accelerated classes and they have classes for those who are average, and those who need extra attention. The only down side is the parking lot situation at dismissal. Several parents DO NOT know how to follow rules and make it hard for the rest of us who do. 4 out of 5 stars, this school is wonderful in academics for both high achievers and those who need extra help. |
| 8/18/2004 | parent | Unfortunately I have not had the best experience with this school. I find that they only cater to those who can keep up, and no clue what to do about those who can't. |
| 4/29/2004 | parent | My son will celebrate his third year with this school next year! My son looks forward to going to school and seems to enjoy his time while there! We also enjoy the activities that have taken place there. |
| 9/9/2003 | parent | We have been with this school since it opened it's doors. We've been very pleased this far (this is our 4th year) with our childs education. They offer her excelerated math and reading to challenge her and keep her interested in learning. The moral focus that is taught is the reason we chose this school. We can only hope and pray that National Heritage will offer 9-12 grades in the future! |
