| 9/17/2012 | parent | I am very pleased with the gifted and talented program at P.S. 230. The school is a great environment, and the principal runs a tight ship (especially considering the size of this school). The teachers in the lower school, from gym to music-and-movement to art to science, are warm, smart, experienced and these are all in addition to the AMAZING kindergarten G&T teacher and strong first grade teacher. Also, a nice sense of community in the class, since the students move up together through the grades. |
| 2/26/2012 | parent | The administrators at ps 230 have little vision, leadership, and imagination. They might plug in holes as they go along, but they do not have the capability to shape a school into something great. I spoke with the principal and assistant principals a number of times because I did not agree with some of their teaching methods. It was clear to me that they have no consistent pedagogy that guides them. |
| 11/16/2011 | other | I am currently going to this school and I think it is the best school so far. I have been in this school since kindergarten and I am having a great year. I am in 5th grade right now so it has been about 6 years in P.S.230. The teachers here are very kind and they help you the best they can. I love this school. P.S.230 rocks! |
| 10/1/2011 | parent | P.S. 230 is an excellent school with a diverse ethnic student body. I met Principal Sharon Fiden at the first PTA meeting and seems enthusiastic about the direction in where the school is heading in terms of increasing state test scores. 2010, I was very impressed with my daughter's first grade teacher Mrs. Saeed. Very detailed in her responses to my concerns regarding my daughters academics in math. Gave suggestions to improve her math strategies. Now in second grade, so far so good, I have no complaints. I do wish the band program included second graders. I wish they have more physical extra curricular activities. |
| 9/22/2011 | parent | They call this a gifted program? The so called gifted program at PS 230 is a water downed version of NYC gifted programs. Teachers are not allowed to move their students forward because the Principal Ms. Sharon Fiden has told them that their students have to be taught what the general education students are taught. This was once a great school with a great gifted program, but since Ms. Fiden arrived more than 8 years ago she has dismantled the program. I am just glad my child graduated this last year. . |
| 7/17/2011 | parent | PS 230 is an excellent school with dedicated teachers and staff. Great kids, great programs. The school is incredibly diverse and rich with culture. A wonderful place to send your kids. |
| 3/31/2011 | parent | This school is a very big school with a small feel. They do a lot with their meager funds relative to size and with budget cuts, and where the city and state fail with regard to funding, the PTA is active and hard-working, and the administration and teaching works hard to meet standards while preserving its unique approach creative enrichment and learning. It is not a test prep factory. Teachers are outstanding and morale among seems high. Extra enrichment programs are often offered on weekends in science and art. |
| 2/10/2011 | parent | Since starting as PS 230, my daughter has found a love a reading and writing, science and art. I am astounded by how much she has learned in such a short time. The school is a warm and welcoming place to parents and children. It is the best start to her academic career that I could have hoped for. |
| 9/21/2010 | parent | P.S. 230 is an excellent school that does its best to keep parents involved at each step of their children's education. They host curriculum meetings, send out monthly newsletters, and host open houses with the school's principal. The teachers are friendly, and have an open door policy. The P.T.A. is super active and trusted, and does a good job of raising funds. There is always a focus on the diversity of community built into the curriculum since the population of the school hails from all parts of the world. I just wish that the lower school (the school is divided into two buildings) had a proper playground. |
| 9/16/2010 | other | I was a student at PS230 last year and I loved it! The PTA was very cooperative with the school with all of the fundraisers that they have for the school! The best was the school fair!!! |
| 6/29/2010 | | My daughter is a student at the P.S. 230 lower school and she really enjoys it. The teachers keep the kids challenged and the staff is engaged. Despite the size of the school, the administration stays on top of things and is responsive to student needs and parental feedback. You really feel that the school cares about every student. We give the school five stars. |
| 4/24/2010 | parent | My daughter goes to p.s.230 lower school. I am not thrilled about the school but cannot complain too much either. It's not the worst school. I agree with some parents there is a large potential for the school if it was more controlled by the principles. The gym is not a good place for kids to sit and wait for teh parents to pick them up, it has no ventilation there whatsoever. I think the food is a major issue also. With all the obesity going on in America, fried food is not the choice to have for such small stomachs. |
| 4/17/2010 | parent | I m a parent and I believe this school is an average school. I have my child going there for the first time and I am not amazed with this school. The principal is not too involved;I have seen her maybe 3 times in the morning, never in the afternoon, she is not visible to the parents. The lower school is a mess at the time of releasing the children. It needs more leadership and staff involvement. The principle needs to show more interaction with the parents. The schools needs to have a meeting in regards to improvements for the lower school and middle school. I also believe the principle should implement the use of uniforms for all the kids. This school has a lot of potential but need more leadership within the staff and most important from the principle. |
| 12/8/2008 | student | I am a student who goes to this school. And from my expireince here i would say this school is the best !!!!!!!! This school is the best thing that ever happened to me. |
| 11/4/2007 | parent | Overall, this is a good school. My daughter is in Mr. Scott's class. Last year, she was in Mrs. Gallagher's class. I find that the parents are very very cooperative and participate in school activities. Yes, the children go up to their classes on their own which in my personal opinion it shows the child to be independent from an early age. This school has the highest test stats compared to other schools in the area. |
| 11/1/2007 | parent | overall the school is pretty good. The add thing that I find about this school is that the lower calsses k-1st grade have to go to their classes by them selves. As far as I now kids are supposed to line up and their teacher is supposed to take them up. Also what I find add is that the child as such a young age if gets hurt go to the nurse by himself. What if the child falls down the stairs! The school is clean and parents are cooparative. there is no yard so the kids dont get outside time in the lower school. The PTA is pretty good and the teachers are very cooparative. Overaal I would give the school three stars. |
| 5/3/2006 | parent | P.S. 230 is excellent school. They provide the gifted program also. There are a lot of activities. Parents get involve with the school in the good level. |
| 1/12/2006 | parent | I am the parent of two boys attending PS 230. Dylan is 5 years old (he turns 6 March 4th) and he is a student in Mrs. Flaherty's kindergarten class. In August of '05, Dylan tested for admission to the gifted program. I sat as he was challenged on a variety of academic skills - including, but not limited to, listening, interpreting, analysis, discovery, struggle (trying to figure out a difficult answer) and success. I was pleasantly surprised. The test lasted for approximately 1hr and 15 minutes. Toward the end, Dylan began to tire but he had made it. Mrs. Flaherty is a very engaging teacher. She keeps the kids growing on multiple levels while orchestrating them through K - math (numbers 1-100, early addition and subtraction, using money), word identification and word stretching (early attempts at phonetically sounding out new sight words or early reading). |
| 1/12/2006 | parent | My daughter is currently in the gifted program and so far I am very happy with it. Kindergarten was a wonderful experience with a lovely teacher who expressed a passion for what she does. Words cannot express how great of a teacher she was. I hope to have this same experience with my 4 yearold that is entering Kindergarten this year.....I will truly be lucky beause there is no comparison. |
| 6/5/2005 | parent | It is a very structured, no nonsense environment. The kindergarten kids get 2-4 pages of homework every night except for weekends. The building is new, bright, clean and air conditioned. The classroom is big, but so is the class size, 25, and there is no assistant teacher. We do, however, have many parent volunteers. The kindergarten teachers are both fabulous. Our daughter's is strict, but very warm and loving. The kids all seem to respect her & really love her too. Reading and writing are strongly emphasized...a good portion of the day is spent working on these skills in some form or another. In addition, they learn math, science, music, dance, gym, social studies, art, conflict resolution and Spanish (taught by a parent volunteer). They also go on many class trips, which parents are encouraged to go on and help. In short, we think it is an amazing program. |
| 4/26/2005 | parent | My son is in the gifted program at PS 230. It is a wonderful and challenging program. The teachers thus far have been excellent. I would recommend the program without hesitation. |
| 12/18/2003 | former student | I was a student at 230. I was in the 'rainbow'/'gifted' program. The teachers there are really great teachers, though some are pretty strict and get a bad rap from us kids. Homework is normal, which means a lot. The math, english and social studies are pretty good, but science is a little weak in the main building (3rd through 5th grades) but if you have a good teacher, then it all works out. Over all, it is a good community to be a part of. |
