| 10/29/2012 | student | I am a senior , class of 2012, of The Mary Louis Academy. I have loved this school ever since I transferred here, junior year. I used to go to a very bad public school, where there were a ton of fights and the science and math was taught poorly and there were a lot of bullies. This school, TMLA, is the COMPLETE opposite. In TMLA, there are no fights, very nice girls, and the teachers strongly care about their students and help them out. Plus, the school itself is BEAUTIFUL. The furniture and computers and everything is very clean and pretty and there is no writing on the desks. The 1st day that I walked through the doors of TMLA, I knew that I was meant to be here and I fell in love with this school. Along with many other seniors, I am going to be upset when I have to leave this amazing school and leave all my friends, but we will stay in touch, and I will be able to look back with a smile on my face that I went to this lovely school. I very strongly recommend that you go to this school. |
| 9/7/2012 | parent | My daughter is a graduate of TMLA. What started as a exceptional experience turned into a nightmare her last year and a half of high school. TMLA has an enormous bullying problem which the administration and deans refuse to acknowledge. When I called the dean to discuss the problem I was told that the girls who her bulling my daughter truly were very nice girls, and that my daughter should seek out new friends. Much to my shock and dismay the dean made the same statement to my daughter, who was a victim of bullying. I was asked what I thought the school should do to assist in this matter. When I told the dean that I thought the Academy should start one of the many anti-bulling programs available, the dean literally laughed, and said "Those programs never work!!" That is when I realized that TMLA has a bullying problem because it has adult bullies running the school. |
| 8/17/2012 | parent | My daughter is heading into senior year. The teacher's have been really nice. However, I feel that they don't give equal time to all girls in the college planning process. My daughter is an average student and as a result is even more nervous about the college acceptance process. She watched throughout junior year, other girls being chosen (for whatever reason) to go visit colleges during school time. The girls that scored well on the psat's and have higher averages get much more attention in so many ways during the college preparation process. Not a fair situation and also not good for "any" future "woman of dignity's" self esteem. Please be ready for this if your daughter is an average student. I had heard such wonderful things before attending this school but will help my daughter on our own in the next few months. It must be because they are hedging their bets that the higher scoring girls get them on the "ivy and better" college acceptance lists. I was an average student yet, in the end, I am making more money and am much more successful in the real world than most of the ivy league people my age and in retrospect, I credit St. Agnes High School for helping to mold me. |
| 10/28/2011 | student | I am a freshman (or, as our principal Sister Kathleen refers to us, freshwoman) at TMLA and I can honestly say that Mary Louis is the most beautiful school I have ever seen. Its library is just like stepping into Hogwarts. The school looks like a castle. Its beautifully crafted doorways and windows are something out of a fairytale. My favorite part of the school is the Library. I love the benches by the windows that are fully cushioned. The warm mahogany work tables always have students diligently working at them. Books line the walls of the main area of the library, but tucked behind a wall is a beautiful book room with small one person couches tucked into corners. This library is what truly defines Mary Louis as a school. |

It must have been fate, because the minute I walked through the doors of TMLA to take the exam, I knew this was where I wanted to recieve my high school education. I will always look back fondly at my four years at Mary Louis as a time of great happiness. |

I'd love to send my daughter there one day! But she's only 4 now :) The idea of all girls fosters the belief that women can be leaders, just as much as our male counterparts. |

I've come to understand that a good education should be measured not by the amount of facts that are taught(though, these are important, too), but by the way it encourages students to think and experience the world. TMLA taught me that I must always give my full effort if I hope to succeed, and to expect nothing less of others. I know that certain elements of TMLA's mission are somewhat controversial--single gender education, religious education, uniforms--but I firmly believe that I am who I am today precisely because of these aspects, and not in spite of them. Of course, I've changed in many respects since I was 17--my most formative years had yet to occur--but Mary Louis laid the groundwork, and for that I am forever thankful. |

The way in which incoming freshman (and parents) were prepared for the transition to high school indicates a well organized and nuturing environment. My daughter is thriving academically and socially. The teachers I have met are wonderful and seem sincere in their desire to educate. I have yet to hear a complaint about this school, and I certainly don't have any. We are very happy with this high school. |

When talking to my former classmates I try to look back on my time there with some perspective that it wasn't all fun and games however I can't say enough about what this school gave to me. I honestly have been changed as a person because of what I learned there. I do consider myself a woman of dignity and now I expect only the best because that was the attitude of Mary Louis. Do your best, expect the best, and never settle for less. For me, Mary Louis is no longer a school but a second home. |

Students cherish each other, and faculty loves their students. Both students and faculty are academically passionate. Faculty leads and encourage students to pursue their dreams. Also, Your morning starts with welcoming hugs and kisses. |

My one daughter who has started her masters and my other in her second year in college, wish they could go back to TMLA. They have great fondness for all (well, most) of the teachers and visit often. They have wonderful friends and they cherish their memories from TMLA. They still wear all their t-shirts, especially the walk a thon shirts and gym pants. TMLA has been a great experience and the teachers prepped them so well for college that they are both on Honor Roll in college, can you imagine? TMLA was worth all the money we spent for this fine education and experience that will forever be with them. A Happy Mom |
| 11/2/2008 | other | I am a 1978 graduate of the school, and returned to Mary Louis as a teacher 25 years later. It is such a wonderful place that I commuted 120 miles DAILY to work there!! It is absolutely the best school in NYC for young women; its rigorous programs, high standards, and caring environment encourage the students to be the best they can be. It creates leaders. If I had a daughter, I would send her there in a heartbeat. I directly credit this school for making me the person I am today, and I am delighted to report that it is a true 'gem' among high schools. The quality of education delivered at this school is second to none, and the environment is warm and loving. I have taught at other prestigious schools, and there is no comparison. Many students worry about the fact that are no boys but for some people that can be a good thing. Many of of my classmates can definitely agree with me when I say that we dont have to worry about how our hair looks, or even how we act.Im glad I go to TMLA and exceptionally proud to be called a woman of dignity! |
| 6/10/2008 | parent | Both daughters did not think they would like going to a Catholic HS, coming from very good public schools. They did not like the idea of no boys, and hated that they would have to wear uniforms. Surprise surprise. Both daughters ended loving TMLA, found no boys to be a plus, and ending loving wearing uniforms. I think the school pride, has something to do with them wearing them on the bus etc, and it does make getting dressed for school a snap. I mention these things first, because no else mentioned them here. Praise for the staff, the choice of classes, and quality of the education is what most mention. It does prepare the young ladies for college, and for life for that matter. There is a great bonding, of diverse students, that I did not see happen as much in public school. The staff go above and beyond. Lots of stories of how they put students first, before their own needs took me a while to believe, but hearing my daughters tell me about this or that, I quickly saw them fall in love with TMLA staff. The older daughter, is now at John Jay, with a scholarship, and TMLA really did prepare her well for college, and for life for that matter. She grew at TMLA, confidence, courage, became more outgoing. Those gifts cannot be judged by SAT scores, I think the staff makes the girls feel (or see) that they are truly special, and valuable by all the TLC and concern they show the students. A funny story, one teacher, a sister, was especially tough on my oldest. By that I mean, she would not let my daughter slide, handing in hasty, poor work, or worse...skipping an assignment ... when she knew my daughter was capable of much more. That sister later became one of my daughters favorites, and when the AP test score came in, my daughter knew in heart, who to thank, and thanks her to this day, one year later, when visiting the school. That should say something, when she drives to pick up the baby sister (willingly lol) now and then after special events... she is thrilled to bump into any of the staff. Both daughters enjoyed the teams, and clubs, and made many friends. My 3rd daughter, chose St. Francis Prep, and she just graduated from there. Comparing the two... The smallness, and close knit life at TMLA puts it above Prep. The bonding, and promotion of women's strengths clearly are gifts that my prep daughter did not get. I also think, that while Prep has caring teachers, they have way more students. At TMLA everyone knows everyone by name. Students know all the students ditto the staff. Friendships happen even outside of your grade/ class. Both schools prepared the girls for college equally, both grads earned scholarships to college. I should say, my Prep daughter does love Prep. just as both TMLA daughters love TMLA. |

Safety is a major concern and all steps taken to insure the girls' well-being. Free SAT prep is a wonderful program. Wish that college visit trips were opened up to all students and not just the highest PSAT scores. All the teachers my daughter had were greta but would like to single out MR. Cordero of the English Department for inspiring my daughter's love of writing. The administration is up on current technology and prepares the girls academically, spiritually and emotionally for college and the working world. You will not be disappointed. |

| 1/2/2005 | parent | I am in the mary louis academy now and i absolutely love it. although there are some issues that need to be addressed, including the principal's attitude towards the students and the modern world, the school is still a great place to learn and develop into young women. the teachers are excellent and always try to help the students in any way. the single sex environment is sometimes looked upon as a 'con', but I believe that it helps us to see who we truly are without showing a false image of ourselves in order to impress boys. this school has challenged me and helped my gpa grow over the past few years, and althoughIi cant wait to graduate, I will miss all of the people I met at this school, except for the principal and the vice principals, they are the true examples of hippocrites. But the school great. |

We wrote a letter to the principal and she never returned our call or write a note. My daughter needs to be at front because she can concentrate better and the Math teacher denied this request. I transferred her to a private school in Manhattan and became third and second place of her senior class. |

| 8/26/2003 | parent | Our daughter was accepted into Mary Louis last year. In her first year, she had matured to a level beyond our expectations. She is so very happy there and has made a ton of new friends. The level of education that she has received has pushed her to her limits. She can no longer sit back and try to 'coast'. The school requires that you keep pushing and that nothing less is acceptable. The school is beautiful and wonderfully maintained. The staff is rather gruff and at times not very flexible, but as we've been told, they have the experience to know when a student needs to have her class changed and when to keep her there. I guess they are right. Our daughter took 2 years of Spanish in middle school, and when she was having trouble with Italian, they refused to change her class. They were right. When our daughter learned that she was 'stuck in Italian', she hit the books harder than she did before. She passed the class with the high 80's. All in all, a great school. I couldn't see our child any place else! |

My daughter is a true example due to all her acomplishments in academics, in dancing(her passion)leadership and as a person in whole, thanks to all the teachers throughtout her 3 years at the school and now thru her senior year starting Sep 2003, who always gave her support and incentivated her to make that extra effort. The competitiveness to excell really amazed me at Mery Louis, loved how on report card day, most girls rushed to the lists posted on the school walls to see if their names were on the list for honors. I am very proud of my daughter and happy that both her dad and I, chose Mery Louis Academy as her guide to that road that leads to college. |

All girls from Mary Louis go on to college--100% of the graduating class for at least the past few years. Mary Louis girls are given the skills they need to be the leaders of tomorrow. | 8/11/2003 | former student | I am a student of the school. A senior now. I will admit I've had many tough times in Mary Louis as the school has fought against me on many of my views and vice versa. However, looking back on my years, I did a lot of positive growing up and matureing within its walls. I made tons of new friends both with students and teachers alike. I haven't spent a lot of unnecessary time in the building, but even one afternoon helping out a club will make you feel needed and acomplished. The education is unlike any other with hands down phenominal college preperation. The school did come with challenges, especially for a person like me who likes that I can do things my way and be left alone about it. Your best is expected and only your best will be tolerated... no if's, and's, or but's. The many departments will encourage you to find a 'home' within the building. I have spent enourmous amounts of time in the music departments working solo on my personal music skills, helping friends with theirs, and even working personally with Mr. Mora (yay!). I found a lot of acceptance with him as anyone can find a teacher that will do the same for them. The staff is excellent and always willing to go out of their way to help a student do and become her best. It's worth a try. Remember, you may struggle along the hike to the top of the mountain, but once you reach the peak, you can see the world. |
