7/3/2012otherNice school in a safe neighborhood. The school is clean and has good technology resources (laptops, desktops, Itouches) for hands on learning. They challenge you to think critically and deeply about what you learn, but what is being taught is not new or challenging. The teachers focus too much on getting you to think about a topic or piece of information and sometimes there is circumlocution. There is a wide range of "intelligence" which makes learning, for some, harder. Some students need more help than others, resulting in having to split up the class and/or giving different work. When they DON'T split the class there is sometimes a disadvantage to the half of the class that understand, because they have to sit there while the teacher tries to explain to the others. There are a lot of discussions and group work, "turn-and-talk," and such. During collaboration, the certain students do more work/participate more than others. There are a lot of cliques and different groupings among the students. Also, some bullying and fighting occur off and on school grounds.
11/2/2010parentSmall beautiful and nurturing school.
10/15/2009studentI am about to graduate from this school and I love it! The teachers do pay attention to kids and there are only some kids who are bullies. In general, this is the best shool ever, in the best environment ever. I usedto get such bad grades in 6th grade, now I get great grades. This school has inmproved me soooooo much! Go 89!
4/4/2009parentA beautfiul building houses this middle school where the kids are 28-35 to a class and work entirely in groups of 4 or 5, leading to a very do-it-yourself learning environment where unmotivated kids leave the work to others. Not much personal attention is paid to the kids by staff, and there is little parent involvement in the school. There is some bullying and cliquishness.
8/5/2008studentHeyyyy! I don't go to IS89 anymore but I have to say it's an awesome school. I only went to 89 for a year before I had to transfer out but in the one year it was probably one of the best school years I've had. All the teachers and counselors but especially the other students help you transition into the way the school works. I was always a shy person but at 89 they make it easier to get to know each other and I ended up talking to my classmates and making close friends. Not to mention I learned a lot too. I would go on and on about how great 89 is but I won't. Seriously consider going to 89 and go Class of '09!
7/11/2008studentHI!!! I just graduated from IS89 in 2008 and I'm going to miss the teachers and kids SO much. I remember how hard it was to find a good high school to apply to but the teachers and guidance counselors at IS89 made it so much easier. IS89 is very into collaboration and they REALLY like kids who can talk in groups and who are willing to share opinions and ideas. When I started out at 89, I wasn't very outgoing but the teachers and kids made it so easy to just talk. So now, I could go on and on about the great classes that IS89 offers and the amazing books that we get to read but all I'll say is that IS89 is a GREAT school and everyone should serisouly consider it for middle school. GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!
11/21/2007parentGreat and wonderful school. My children and I reccomend I.S. 289 ( Houdson River Middle School) pver any other middle school in New York City.
5/15/2006parentThe school is very modern and up to date. This is a relatively new school with a new gym, library, cafeteria, computers, lockers and classrooms. The halls and classrooms are very clean. The teachers are intelligent and caring. The students could use a little help. There is a lot of bullying and aggressive behaviour.
