| 11/2/2012 | parent | WFS is a true gem. We relocated to Virginia last summer where both of our children have entered a gifted school in grade 6 and 3 respectively. WFS could not have prepared them better. They are both excelling here, with the teachers commenting on their excellent academic background but also their positive attitude to learning, their excitement about new challenges, their collaborative attitude, and their community orientation. We credit WFS for their academic preparation and for the values they learned there. The teaching staff is excellent and the administration is forward-looking, focused on best practices, and determined to offer the best classroom teaching possible. I could not recommend a school more highly and strongly recommend a personal visit. (PS: Incidentally, limited homework is not indicate of poor academics.) |
| 10/18/2012 | parent | Change is a constant part of our lives and our school community, how we manage these changes is what is important. Westbury Friends has not only changed but evolved every year that I have been there. One of the greatest enemies of progress is stagnation and this school has progressed. My son started in Kindergarten, graduated and is now a very successful student in Middle School with an above 90 average in all his classes. He was completely prepared for the change and brings so much more to his new school for all the focus on community, spirit, integrity, equality, simplicity and peace. |
| 10/17/2012 | parent | I couldn't have selected a better school for my son. He attended Westbury Friends School from nursery to fifth grade and while he was there learned so much. They teach students how to think and instill a true love of learning and of how things work. Not only that but it is a school with a huge heart. Given the lack of rote learning I was concerned about how my son would transition however he did extremely well in middle school and is now at Chaminade, a very rigorous high school and is doing just fine. I would highly recommend the school. |
| 10/16/2012 | parent | I couldn't have been happier with the 5 years my daughter spent at Westbury Friends School. She graduated from WFS feeling really good about herself, with great values and determined to make a positive difference in the world. I felt that the school was a phenomenal partner in helping to instill the things that really mattered to us in her. She excelled academically and was given plenty of individual attention to help her feel stimulated throughout her WFS years. She has continued to thrive in middle school and was definitely prepared for the transition. In every way I emphatically recommend Westbury Friends School. |
| 9/17/2012 | parent | If you're looking for an early childhood school (N-K), then Westbury Friends School is a good fit. I wouldn't consider anything beyond kindergarten. Students aren't challenged academically and WAY too much time is spend on community outreach programs. When my daughter made the jump to middle school two years ago, she was extremely unprepared for the experience, as were many of her classmates. Very little homework is given, making the jump to MS even more difficult. And now, with enrollment down every year at Westbury Friends School, they're even having a tough time holding on to teachers. There has been a tremendous turnover and the replacement teachers are not of the same quality as the teachers who have been there for many years. I guess business is business, and I don't blame them for leaving for greener pastures, but it's at the expense of the children. Again, my recommendation is NOT to stay beyond kindergarten. |
| 10/14/2010 | parent | Early in our children s lives, when it was time to separate, we decided we had to find the perfect environment , one that would essentially replace us. We longed for a school that would respect and rejoice in the wonders of childhood; treat our children with kindness, care and authority; inspire our children and instill a love of learning; support us in our teachings of values: community, peace, integrity and equality. All this and more; and Westbury Friends School has been precisely the place. We wake each day knowing we have made the right choice; knowing our children are in capable loving hands learning, growing, moving forward; knowing this is one decision we will never regret. We don t look forward to the day they graduate 5th grade but realize the foundation they received will take them well into adulthood. And for this we are thankful. |
| 9/30/2010 | parent | My children look forward to school in the morning... they leave with a smile and come home with a smile. What more can a parent ask? Calling Westbury Friends School a "school" truly is a disservice. The word school has such a negative connotation for most. WFS doesn t conjure up any of the negative feelings that were associated with "school" when I was a child. During the summer, I asked my two boys if they were enjoying camp. The responded yes, but we miss school. Recently, my son's friend asked him what private school is. He replied... "private school is much like public school, except it has better learning and no bullies." Although I may have used different language in explaining private school to an adult, in essence, I would be describing the very same thing. What my son was really describing was Westbury Friends School. |
| 9/30/2010 | parent | Our entire family -- parents and children -- could not be happier than we are with Westbury Friends School. Both of our children are happy to go to school every morning; push for us to attend all school events; and adore all of their teachers -- including the strict ones. Insightful teachers appreciate and respect the different strengths and weaknesses of every child -- and they know every child and challenge and support accordingly. What makes the school truly unique is its incredible diversity along ethnic, racial, religious, socio-economic, etc lines. It reflects the America of the 21st century, and the teaching mirrors the country we should aspire to be: respectful of diversity nationally and across the globe, intellectually curious, striving for peace, sincere, emphasizing integrity, preserving the environment, and focusing on the things in life that give meaning. |
| 10/28/2009 | parent | My daughter experienced a wonderful Early Childhood experience at this school. We decided to have her discontinue this year after 4 years at the school. The upper school has very few students enrolled and does not offer the challenge we need for our child. We were also sad that music and technology which were once wonderful, are not present in after school anymore. I also question safety at the school which is quite open in our present day and age. The warm environment of the past was replaced by one of coldness and restriction. |
| 10/27/2009 | parent | My son attended WFS for six years. The environment was wonderful until about a year ago when negative changes occurred. The school lost excellent teachers over this change and I have since pulled my child out. I do agree that the Early Child hood program is wonderful and should be considered the best. On the other side, the programs for First Grade on up are not great at all. There are very few students and they tend to double up grade levels. Why should I pay all of this money for a private school if my child has to share a class with other students of a different grade level. Early Childhood A+ Older Grades D |
| 10/14/2009 | parent | As my daughter enters her 4th year at Westbury Friends, I will tell you I would have her no where else. This school has diversity and a community that is second to none. The faculty have been nurturing, attentive, stimulating and most importantly, instilling the love of learning. Admin changes last year have raised the bar across the entire campus and it shows. You owe it to you and your child to look at Westbury Friends School. |
| 10/6/2009 | parent | I found this school quite by accident, and I am so happy I did! This is my child's third year, and it just keeps getting better. Loving, nurturing, yet academically challenging environment, wonderful teachers who truly respect my child for who she is, community service opportunities, diversity. Recent changes in admin have improved the school dramatically! |
| 10/4/2009 | parent | Westbury Friends is the perfect example of what a diverse school should look like. Diversity is welcomed and is very much a part of the school's learning culture. Each child is appreciated for their own uniqueness. The Nursery program is by far the best on Long Island. The teacher is amazing and she creates a sense of wonder that excites each child beyond measure. The importance of educating the whole child is the focus, as children are provided with core values that develop their emotional and social skills. A new head of school was appointed a year ago and she has done an awesome job. This school year an outdoor classroom has been added to enhance the curriculum for the early childhood program. This provides an opportunity for children to expand their dramatic and creative play through the use of a outdoor stage, wind chimes, and art easels |
| 7/15/2009 | parent | School has undergone changes this term. Not all good. School lacks after school enrichment which was always great until this past term. We pulled our child to create more stimulation in a larger class setting. Classes too small for older children. Loving environment that was once present is no longer there. |
| 7/1/2009 | parent | Fabulous loving environment. The program social and academic component are incredible. |
