When my child had an issue once on the bus, he told his teacher and she sent him (my 1st grader) to handle it. She sent him to the principal to report it, then together, they went to the other child's classroom. It teaches him to be proactive in handling issues and gives him the self-confidence that he could do it. Way to go DCRE! |

During my wife's recent illness, Mrs.Arrington ans staff members gave great support and Mrs.Arrington was very understanding with helping our child cope and showing flexibility with our son. My wife was also a former employee at DC and she had become a regular sub at the school. She loves DC and is always willing to hep out as needed. Mr.Nusinov and admin staff work great together, organizing programs and events for all the students and seeing to it that each child's needs are met. He just recently transitioned to middle school and our younger son is still at David Cox as a 4th grader. In all the years that we have been at David Cox, our experience there has been nothing short of fabulous! In the years that we have been there, the staff turnover has been extremely low - which says a great deal about the administration for the school itself. We have been through many transitions while at David Cox, including multiple school boundary change proposals as well as a change in the principal from Kathy Elling to Chuck Nusinov. Both principals have done a terrific job and continue to foster and retain outstanding teachers. The Basic School philosophy, that David Cox Road Elementary was based on - is true to form given the 'community' of students, parents, staff and administration - who for the years that we have been there, continue to work together every day. The school's community works on everything from budgets, helping in the individual classrooms, special school programs, rallying support of each other when needed - the list goes on. I talk with other parents throughout our school district and I know that our school is the best in all of Mecklenburg County. Where else can you find a principal who is as involved with the kids, as Chuck Nusinov? I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone like him anywhere else in the country. When the school has a dance - Chuck is right there on the floor with the kids, leading the line dances - I'm not sure who loves it more - the kids or the parents! What Kathy Elling started, Chuck Nusinov continues - David Cox has been blessed with the best of everything. Go Dolphins!!!! |

| 7/1/2008 | parent | My daughter transferred during the middle of the school year (kindergarten) and although her teacher's were nice, I was disappointed with what they were teaching my child. She learned much more at her previous school and I felt she was 'set back' at David Cox. At her old school she was reading and writing stories, at David Cox, the class work was color by number and writing full pages of 'G''s or 'Z's or whatever the alphabet letter of the day happend to be. Overall, I was not pleased with the school. The office staff was horrible as well. They never knew what was going on in the school; they were clueless. The PTA was even worse. I called and left messages with the President. I even wrote email's and never got a response. Finally after 3 months of trying to contact them, I gave up. Some PTA; what a joke! |
| 10/21/2007 | teacher | The principal and vice principals are what make this school amazing. Being that North Carolina does not have a union, having great administration is vital. In other states, a teacher might stay even if the principal wasn't that great. NOT in a state with no union. Your livelihood depends on it. Teachers fight to get into David Cox. From what I have heard, teachers fight to leave other schools. All it takes is a trip downtown to the administration building or go to a teacher training to hear the admiration of this school by all. It is the teacher that makes your child have a good year and all the teachers want to be here. I have never worked with more quality people who live to collaborate with each other. |

Due to the severity of my son's physical limitations, a number of services are required in order to accommodate his needs within his school environment. I have found Ms. Elling to be very proactive and supportive in making sure that those special needs were met. I have also found Ms. Elling to be very responsive when issues need to be addressed. My son's second grade teacher expected my son to perform to his fullest potential academically. This consistent level of expectation by the teacher resulted in my son having an extraordinarily successful year. David Cox staff members have welcomed my son since the day he rolled into the school and they have my sincere thanks. I look forward to my second and third child experiencing the same high quality of care and education found at David Cox. |
| 1/28/2006 | parent | We have had all 3 of our boys attend David Cox. Our children have had receptive, hard working and dedicated teachers. In fact, there was nothing that I could not work out with their teachers. If I needed to express concern, they were receptive. The school has its challenges. Increased student population and more minority students, teachers striving for on grade level for many. Parent involvement and family support is key and D.C. has very dedicated families. Our boys liked their school/teachers. My young boy needs more academic challenge and the TD program helps with this need. Math superstar program is taught in each grade to challenge and stretch their math skills. Teachers are challenged to help students at a range of levels. Some kids need more challenging work and some need the basics. D.C. has low teacher turnover and they (with parents)have kept this neighborhood school a good choice. |
| 11/23/2005 | parent | This is my son's home school and I refused to send him for kindergarten. The previous principal, Joy Warner, was fantastic! We moved to a local neighborhood at that time since we heard wonderful things about the school then. Now, caucasians are the minority ethnic group, the principal is too busy to attend to teacher/parent needs, the kids are treated like prisoners marched up and down the halls, and worst of all, the school teaches for the EOG's rather than teaching children. Highly disappointed in all of CMS schools but particulary this one and Mallard Creek Elementary. I would suggest moving to another area or going private if you want your child to receive a decent education. |

She all but called me a liar. I am not happy with this school at all. Next year I plan to transfer my daughter to a school that will be more sensitive to her needs! |

I am very pleased with the principal, teachers (atleast the ones my children have been assigned to), safety issues, being informed on any changes, etc. When I have ever had a concern, the principal and vice principal have addressed and eased any concerns I have had. I wish David Cox could be a middle and high school! I would make sure my kids were there! I would recommend this school. I like the mix of people. One teacher caught a speech concern with one of kids and was tested (with my approval) and was in a speech class a week later. My son didn't fall behind with going to the speech classes and is on track with everyone else. Thanks for the effort! |

My son's 1st grade teacher Mrs. Eagleburger is an excellent teacher, it was her first year at David Cox and she did everything that she could possibly do to help my son. She gave him extra help when he needed it and worked with him one on one when she had the time. The staff at this school is wonderful. They had meetings with me several times to get my son on the right track. All procedures were followed to ensure that my son got all the proper help that he needed. He was diagnosed as A.D.H.D and will be in special classes to ensure that he is helped with his learning in math and english. I recommend this school to all children. The staff and the environment is awesome! |
| 3/5/2004 | parent | This school has done a change that is unbelievable. This shcool has really disappointed me. When we first attended this school it was up and coming. The principal (who has transferred) was the best. The principal at this time do not posess the leadership needed to run the school the way it should be run. There are times that I feel like we are trying to get membership in a country club. I believe in education for all people, regardless to race. My husband applied for a position on the PTA. A position that would allow him to reach the minority to get them involved in the school and in their children lives. We are very involved in our children education but this year has been the worst for us. We don't believe that we will return next school year (we will have to see a drastic change).
