| 4/3/2011 | parent | I normally do not post on these sites. However, since my son's schools has been taken over by the new principal things have gotten so bad. Discipline is not an issue and never was. The man is nothing but about testing, testing and more testing. Students are taught nothing at this school. During an open house the situation was chaotic to say the least, the school has one asst. principal and very young and inexperienced group of people called academic facilitators and for the life of me I cannot figure out who to talk to about my sons issues at this school. I was told by friends about how good this school was, but even they are backing away from it. Poor North Meck, I feel sorry for both studens and staff. |

The long time Principal was forced out by the powers that be and was replaced by several other temporary Principals that were removed. The newest Principal comes from a school of less than 400 students will little experience running a large high school. The student population has gone from first to worst. Parents, my student currently attends this school and the morale of both the staff and high achieving students has gone out the window. Avoid North Mecklenburg high and attend Hough High if at possible. |

Some of the counselors are a little diffucult by theres people that really do want to help you out and are willing to make sure you dont 'get left behind' I love it, and the people there. |

The teachers and administrators are some of the finest that I have ever seen. They have gone above and beyond to help my child succeed; staying after school, counseling, offering advice, you name it. The overcrowding issue is what it is, but does not take away from what this school has to offer. I am looking forward to the next three years at North Meck! |

He has learned how to control time and his teachers stay afterschool to tutor him. The 'overcrowding' issue is not as bad as it sounds. The school has scheduled themselves so that overcrowding is as small as possible. Send your child to North Meck!!! GO Vikings! |

We have the best School spirit in CMS and a majority of us love going there. The teachers and principal are always on hand for questions or meetings. |
| 3/21/2008 | parent | Principal is involved with parents/students. It has many available AP and Honors courses. Teacher quality for the most part is good. Counselors are not useful or well informed. Overall I am pleased with discipline. The school lets the students have some freedom and recognizes that adolescents will make mistakes and it will not be the end of the world. Wish the principal had more leeway to enforce his own discipline policies instead of enforcing rigid school board policies. |

My classes were overcrouded, and I hated walking the 200+ yards out to the trailers. However, my teachers were friendly and I got on honor roll which satisfied me. In contrast, the last 3 years of high school at a private school have taught me a lot. Not academically, but environmentally. My graduating class of 96 allows a relaxed and personal school day. With classes of a maximum 20 students, we get the one-on-one attention we need. It has certainly helped raise my interest for school. | 12/18/2007 | other | I was a student at North Meck. Class of '05. I'm not going to say that this school is the greatest school or the worst. It deffinately needed improvement when I was there. But I did enjoy being there. I went to another high school for my first 2 years and to North my last 2. It was deffinately overcrowded and the layout of the school made it even worst. The one thing I never understood is why did they remodel the football field when it was just fine but could remodel the bus parking lot which was horrible. It is way to small for any amount of students whether overcrowded or not. The teachers were the best that I have ever had and they helped me more than they had to. North was deffinately a great school to be graduate from. |

He attended a very small, rather sheltered middle school so I was a bit unsure about his transition, but it has been very smooth. He has been appropriately challenged in the IB program and is enjoying the school spirit and extracurricular offerings. So far so good! |

They have received an exceptional education from teachers, staff and administrators who really care about students. While there are no guarantees, I do not fear for the safety of my children. The administration at North Meck has implemented safeguards that are flexible as situations present themselves. My believe in North Meck is so strong that I fought to keep them at this 50+ year old school over a new high school. Go Vikings! |
| 8/20/2007 | student | as long as you do the IB programme you're fine i wouldnt recommend going to regular classes. Extracurriculars although sports are good they are missing a lot of normal clubs like beta and national junior honor society for underclassmen. Also kids at this school miss out on alot of normal high school things such as pep rallies because in the past the school has had issues with students making poor choices. Saftey is excellent as long as the student isnt asking for trouble your fine and the staff are wonderful mr.burch is nice and supportive and he gets to know you on a personal level ( principle) OTher teachers do anything they can to help you make the grade. some come to school early some stay after some even use there lunch brakes to help students. Over all the school is Awesome |

Came to NMHS from a school out of state with good grades and a good disciplinary record and will be leaving there with neither. If your child can afford to go to another school, I would suggest it! |
| 1/21/2007 | student | North is a great school. The academics are leading the majority of the graduating class to prestigious public and private universities. The extra-curriculars are phenomenal. There is something for everyone. Although North is huge the sense of community cannot be beaten. We truly are a family. Our sports are some of the best in the area especially our mens soccer which was ranked 12th in the nation earlier in the year. North has diversity. Overall, North is a great experience for kids to have. I would never dream of going to a different school. |

| 10/31/2006 | parent | My daughter graduated from North last year and she got an excellent education with a good variety of honors and AP courses and many choices for extracurricular activities. I have 2 complaints. 1) the old facility which is 100% over capacity. No parking. It's hard to get to class due to the large amount of mobile units. Disciple seems to be an issue at times. 2) It is not fair to compare IB students GPAs with non-IB (honors and AP) students. It's not fair that an IB student gets 6 credits for gym or art when another students gets 4 credits. Like other IB high schools throughout the country North should have a class ranking for IB and non-IB students or have a way to weight classes for fairness. |

I'll be entering my senior year in 07, and would never think of attending another high school.The school spirit and comradery felt by the majority of north students greatly outweighs the bad feelings presented by 'troublemakers'.Iv been enrolled in all IB/AP classes for my 3 completed years at North, and personally believe that North Meck has provided every student with every opportunity to acheive. Special programs, and the many levels of classes that are available, are in place to accomidate every students individual learning style.Large classes of well-behaved and respectable students are no problem, but when parents fail to enforce dicipline outside of school they can only expect a poor performance.I believe that it is every students choice to succeed and North Meck is one of the best public high schools in which to do so. |
| 6/17/2006 | parent | NMHS is a very good school offering an awesome International Baccalaureate program and dozens of Adavnced Placement (AP) courses. Select schools nationwide offer an IB program. NMHS has a large and diverse student body which only enhances it's sports programs, clubs and academia. Mallard Park High School scehduled to open in August of '07 will relieve NMHS by approx. 1000 students. I have a '06 graduate and a rising junior at NMHS. My children and their friends have simply enjoyed NMHS over the years. Yes, there have been a few rotten apples draw negative publicity to the school. NMHS responded swiftly by discarding the rotten apples. The new principal is good although Mr. Poole has surely been missed by all as he was awesome! NMHS offers it's students hundreds of scholarships for college. Let's not forget our favorite staff-Asst. Principal Dr. Cox is a jewel...a true professional. They better keep him. |
| 6/13/2006 | former student | It is sad to see what has become of North Meck. This school could be so awesome, but thanks to the politics of the school board it isn't. This school is not safe. It is so easy to accidentally cross the wrong guy s path or be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The whole atmosphere just feels tense and on the edge ready to boil over. And it s a rare day I didn t see a fight. There is so much stuff that goes on at this school that you don t hear on the news. And whoever said this school isn t over crowded is delusional or probably works for the district. The principal isn t up to snuff. He definitely can t handle these kids. He s too nice if there is such a thing. These kids need someone who won t let them runover him. The kids from Charlotte are the main.trouble.makers.thanks.to.the.student.choice. plan. |

Children are treated like animals crossing the road. If you have the choice, do not send your kid(s) to any CMS School with perhaps the exception being Providence & Myers Park. There have been no studies to confirm that having more students decreases the amount learned, in fact areas such as japan and korea have 40+ students per class, yet score significantly above our average. The IB program at NMHS provides an intense well-rounded curriculum so that students can compete on a higher level with other countries, which is reason enough to attend. Also, the 'massive fight' reffered to, was only a small group of trouble-makers made far worse by huntersville police and the media over-reacting. The only ones in danger were those who started the fight. |

I believe this school is also unsafe (lock down, police taser students in massive fight), has racial issues/attitudes, and don't let CMS fool you 'Choice Plan' = busing. Another glaring example of CMS mismanagement and placing race before a quality education. Go private if you can afford it. |

Before the start of the 2005-2006 school year 2 modular units were added as well as enlarging the cafeteria. The classes themselves are over crowded, with at least 30 students in most classes even in the trailors and modular units. |

The teachers are overworked, exhausted and spend too much time working on discipline then teaching. Children with high iqs are struggling and only succeed because they are smart. Lunch is standing room only and most outside huddled under cover during rain,,,this is a new cafeterial and kids cannot sit. They moral and teaching has suffered a great deal. |
| 2/15/2004 | parent | This school is way overcrowded but they are expanding. My daughter loves this school but she has to be at the bus stop by 6 am and we only live 10 minutes away. I think the choice program hurts people who go to their neighborhood school because they have to get up so much earlier because they do not have enough buses for just the local kids. Most buses are over crowded. They need to build another high school more in the Northern part of Huntersville or Lake Norman. |

We have alot of new building and growth and too few schools - ratio of 11.9 students per teacher then why do some classes have over 30 kids per class. Many portables due to overcrowding - very discouraging! |
