9/18/2012parentMy son and I both LOVE Bay View and the staff. Any time I had a concern, it was answered promptly and handled if necessary. We are really going to miss Bay View when we move!
6/8/2009parentI have two children that currently attend Bayview and I feel that there is an extreme lack of communication between the teachers and the parents. I have written numerous notes to both teachers requesting information regarding grades, events, etc. and have never received information in return. My daughter is in Kindergarten and she is not being challenged in the least. I made a request for her to be placed in a 1st grade reading program and never heard a word back. The only response that I got was that the computers would adjust to her reading level. I would like to see more information sent home with the kids about what they will be doing in the upcoming weeks. Spelling words, Upcoming Tests, etc. It would be very helpful to know when we need to help our children study!
9/2/2008parentBoth of my children attend this school. We love it. The teachers are great with the kids and are always helpful in anyway possible. The kids enhoy going to school and are involved in many activities. I would recommend this school to any family in Norfolk
1/9/2008parentI have a daughter that is in 1st grade here and my son graduated last summer after having been there since he was in Pre-K. I attended this school as a child too! I can't say enough good things about the teachers and staff here. They are always available and always a pleasure to talk to. The curriculum is rigourous, but not outrageous. The community of parents and grandparents gives the school a family feel that I appreciate so much. I look forward to my daughter's remaining 4 years there!
3/19/2006parentThree of our four children started Bayview in January of 2006. Our family is very pleased with Bayview. There is a reasonable amount of homework provided and extra help is given by the school when a student is encountering difficulties. The teachers are very encouraging and we love the emphasis the school places on Math (First in Math) and English/Reading (AR program). Many parents walk to school with their children and wait for them at the end of this day and this gives my wife and I a sense of community and opportunities to meet other parents. Our biggest complaint with the school is our children get a substitute teacher more often than we wpould like (mostly to fill in for teachers at meetings or conferences). We look forward to returing to Bayview in the fall.
8/24/2005parentThis school is like an extended family. Everyone takes great pride in this school. Overall, my kids had positive experiences. The only negative side to this school and schools in Virginia across the board is the amount of stress they put on the children regarding testing for the SOLs and the amount of homework was excessive. Many parents voiced their concerns about the many hours of homework handed out daily to our children. My children were among the 'high achievers' cluster and most of the class was required to attend a 'stress management' counseling session in the guidance office. My kids are smart but generally don't stress about school or tests. They've attended several other schools and have never needed counseling for stress before or since. I feel this was a result of one teacher who put the kids on pins and needles about the SOL tests.
7/31/2005parentMy son had a wonderful 2 years at bayview. His grades went up , Sol tests were high and the teachers went the extra mile to help him out
7/27/2005parentMy daughter just finished her first year at Bayview, and I was mostly impressed with the staff and the school. The Kindergarten program is very good, as long as you are a parent that takes an interest in your child. I found that the kids that had parents that were involved and helped with homework and read to their kids, did well. The others did not do so well. I really believe that school is a collaborative effort and if parents and teachers work together, Bayview can accomplish great things.
6/1/2005parentI can tell you all three of my kids went to this school. I am excited about the music programs they do such a wonderful job with the strings programs. We do have problems with teachers not taking into account the ADD problems with the students. There is also to many problems with parents hanging out all day at the school pretending they are helping when in essence they are only looking for their own child to earn higher marks or get special attention. It's not fair to the other students whose parents don't have the luxury to hang out all day when they have to work and provide the necessities for their family.
9/2/2004parentMy child is in the 2nd year in this school. The school for the most part is a good school but it lacks educated teachers for those childern with ADD/ADHD and the staff need to follow through when tools are implemanted to help the child so that the child feels equal and not inferior [and]so that you can also feel that they are really helping not just brushing you off because of your child's learing disability. It must brush up on educating the teachers on how to work with children with special needs.
4/19/2004parentMy daughter is in her 2nd year at Bayview. She has been diagnosed with ADD. We feel that her teacher isn't working with her in the aspects of what the counselor suggested at our meetings and she is still falling behind. I believe they need more teachers that can deal with this type of disability so the student can reach his/her goals and not be retained so as they will have to repeat a year. Other than that I think BayView is a good school all around and I hope that someday soon they'll get the funds for tutors as most parents cannot afford private help.
1/16/2004teacherI have enjoyed my years teaching at Bay View. Though a large school, it has the ability to make everyone feel important. Our goal is to provide a quality education for everyone, and I feel we have consistant success stories, and are continually evaluating ourselves and our teaching, and then adapting it to meet the needs of the individual students. We have a dedicated staff, that is ensuring our school is 'World Class', and that it stays that way!
11/5/2003parentThis school is not for kids with disabilities. The staff is uneducated in all aspects of special education with regards to ADD or ADHD. No programs, no help, and uncooperative faculty and staff.
