| 3/6/2011 | student | I used to attend yelm high school, and overall, the environment is not the best, some of the teachers are awesome, but overall it has too much going on. The girls attending their are more involved with drama and their own personal lives and it becomes a huge distraction listening to problems instead of you teacher. Extension school is a way better school. |
| 8/24/2008 | student | I am a senior for the 2008-2009 school year. I think this school does all it can to help its studants achieve greatness in an interesting fashion. Personaly the teachers I have bean lucky enough to know are fun and know how to connect with studant. Even the studants who attend are cool. Everybody mixes in with each other and everyone no matter what thier style gets along fairly well. |
| 8/2/2008 | student | I am currently a senior at Yelm High School and I have to say, I really enjoyed my time at the institution. The new buildings are great, and the staff is (for the most part) very willing to assist you with any of your problems. The curriculum is not quite as challenging as I would sometimes like, but it is not a slacker school by any means. This school is definitely better than nearby schools. Not to mention the sports programs at Yelm are great, and the coaches are top of the line. |
| 4/26/2008 | parent | Most of the staff is bias based on their 'relationships' with students. Although this is not true with all the staff, actual teachers that treat students equally and staff that are completely unbias are hard to come across. |
| 1/9/2008 | student | I entered this school in March 2006, coming from Northern Virginia. The school curriculum is an absolute disgrace. I am so far ahead of everyone at the school, I haven't learned anything new since I got here, and the environment was not welcoming at all once i arrived. If what people say is true [that this is one of the better schools in the state] then maybe Washington State needs to rethink the way it's running its school systems. |
| 9/25/2007 | student | Great Teachers. Great Building. Great Students. |
| 10/22/2006 | former student | I use to be a student at Yelm High School until this year when I move out of state due to a parents job. The teachers are great and love to help out students. The students are great. Every one is friends with everyone. FFA is awesome. FFA teachers are great, especially Mr. Mounts & Mrs. Perry & Mr. Patrick! Some other cool teachers are Mr. Krup & Mr. Burgh. You are super lucky if you get a class with one of these guys. Go Tornados! |
| 9/16/2006 | student | i think yelm is one of the better schools in the state we may not have the best test scores but that should change this year with the school going to a 10 through 12 grade level and the bigger school and more teachers |
| 5/25/2006 | parent | This school is wonderful in many areas, but alos lacking quality in many areas. But, then again, what school isn't? My daughter tells me that the kids are nice, and that there are never many amjor issues. The classes are funa dn many of her teachers are helpful and help earn her interest in the subject they are teaching. |
| 5/25/2006 | student | I used to be a student at YHS and I must say that it was a great school. I am now enrolled at the Home Schooling program that YHS offers, and it is excellent as well. I enjoy the teachers, and they are always there when you need them. The principal could be a little more 'there' for the kids and such, but that is just something that will have to be worked on. Everyone I know loves the school and the parents like it too. Notable teachers are...Mrs.Threlkeld, MR.MOUNTS (especially), Mr. McClellan (jefe), and Ms. Adams. They all strived for the best in their students and in me as a person. They all worked with the people who needed help and gave them what they needed to succeed. Thanks guys so much. YHS has it's share of issues, but all schools do. Thanks for inspiring me to do my best. |
| 1/20/2006 | former student | I don't like this school at all. Many students fall behind in classes because lack of help from teachers. This results in many students becoming super seniors, that is, they have to do the 12th grade over again. |
| 12/28/2005 | former student | Yelm High School is not somewhere i would recommend your children to go. It does offer sports progrmas and other activities, but the coaches and staff are unsucessful with winning and team/group bonding. Most of the classes are too large, yet most of the teachers are friendly. Parent involvement is minimal and overall the school lacks the qualtiy it needs to be a 'good' school. I woul dnot recommend it to other parents. |
| 11/9/2005 | parent | Yelm high school is the kinda school for possibilitys but lacks highly in making the right decisions in punishing students. |
| 11/9/2005 | parent | My son attends Yelm High School and despite his struggles all of the teachers and counselors have been very supportive and willing to go the extra mile in an effort to help him and me, as a parent. Their willingness to communicate with me on a regular basis in an effort to help my son succeed is very impressive. |
| 10/26/2005 | former student | I went Yelm High School and had to transfer because there was a lot of fights and gangs. I was always in trouble and when I switched I was much better off, and I got alot better grades. |
| 2/16/2005 | student | I am currently a student at Yelm High School and I do love it there. Mr. Scogsberg is the choir teacher and I am very involved in that class. I'm also a part of the christian club at our school that meets every wednesday. There are a lot of things to be involved in and I think that if people here at yelm would at least try to do there work then they'd be amazed at what they can do. I went from a c-d student to mostly A's and some B's, so parents push your kids, and kids push yourselves. |
| 1/25/2005 | parent | This is our first year with a child attending YHS. As a parent my only real complaint so far is that the traffic getting to the school is horrendous and if you are parent-transporting your child in the same traffic as the buses, if your child is on the bus and late it is excused but if the parent writes a note stating the child was late for the same reason the bus was the school will not accept it as an excuse for a tardy. One little traffic snafu and there is no way to get to the school on time, zero alternate routes. Very frustrating. |
| 1/23/2005 | former student | I think Yelm is a great school. I graduated from there in 2003 and would never want to of graduated from anywhere else. There are so many extracurricular activities and clubs, we were truly blessed. The parent involvement was good, but things could always get better. The academics of Yelm are great, it is all about student dedication. The teachers are wonderful. Mr. Rayl, the principle, is amazing. He is one of the greatest additions Yelm has received in the last few years. Go Jazzline! |
| 11/19/2004 | former student | I am a graduate from Yelm, I think this school could be a good one if the school administration actually cared about improving the school, the only good thing I got out of that school was being in choir with Mr. Skogsberg and being on Jazzline, otherwise it needs lots of improvement. |
| 8/9/2004 | student | I am currently a student at Yelm High School and I think that we do have some good teachers. Mr. Krupp is the best teacher I've had at any of the schools that I have gone to. I only wish he was a science teacher because that is the field I wish to go into. We could really use some more difficult science classes. |
| 5/14/2004 | student | There a very few great teachers here at YHS. Mrs. Albert, Mr. Enders, Miss Newbury and Mr. Mounts you guys are full out extreme teachers. Thank you for giving me a good education. Mr. Rayl you are a wonderful principal. Thank you. |
| 2/23/2004 | parent | YHS is a good school that is plagued by the same trouble that most HS are facing these days. YHS is one of the reasons we stayed in the community .. it was a good place to send our kids. I also give very high marks to the music program and to our excellent FFA. YHS teachers are a mix of the sublime and the so so .. most get high marks. Note worthy are ... Underhill, Throkeld, BERG, Partick, Lawrenson, Skogsberg, Strong, Baker and Krups. |
| 1/1/2004 | former student | Yelm High School is a great school. The community leaders, students, teachers, and business rally behind the schools success. There will never be enough money, time, or resources to please everyone. And politics will always exist, but most of the teachers and administration are all great. There truly is a mesh of diverse styles and methods, as in all of life. All departments have high quality teachers, with a lot to offer. At the high school level students and their parents need to be engaged in their education. Not all teachers are going to bang your head against the wall to ingrain the quadratic formula. Students who can take responsibility for their learning will be better prepared to make a positive contribution to society. Although no system is without flaws, YHS certainly provides the tools for moving forward. Our students reflect our community, and their success starts at home. |
| 9/9/2003 | parent | I have seen the best and not so good at this high school, but all and all until you have been in other districts you really don't know how good it is compared to other schools. I feel my children are doing very well here and that's what's important, not the money I have to spend on their classes. |
| 8/30/2003 | parent | Yelm High School is terrific! Well suported by the community and recent recipient of a Gates Foundation grant, the school is growing to meet the needs of the students. As a parent I feel my child is getting an excellent education. Yelm is a great place to live, and the schools are a big part of it. |
| 8/20/2003 | other | Yelm High School is in dire need of change. It needs a principal who will interact with the students and REALLY listen to them to get the ball moving in the right direction instead of someone who merely humors their ideas for reputations sake. I must say that I have first-hand experience at this school, and listing all of the bad things about it would be impossible to do here. I will say however that Yelm High School has an excellent music department, even though it is neglected by most, and they have an outstanding dance team. Yelm High School also has a few excellent teachers in the english and history departments. |
| 8/10/2003 | parent | I think the teachers and principle need to listen to the students more and quit taking the teachers word as gold. I also feel that they need to spend their money more wisely so that they have the materials they need for class instead of parents being charged for classes that are required to graduate. |
