Dig Deeper on Sandusky

Sandusky is an old port town on the southern shore of Lake Erie, traditionally with strong ties to the steel industry. The area has evolved into a major recreation and entertainment destination with offshore islands and bays and the famed Cedar Point amusement park. While there is still plenty of industry, not only related to steel but also manufacturing of machinery, paint, food processing and plastics, the area has become more desirable and livable.

Downtown has gone through considerable renewal and is attractive and clean with some historic interest. There is a new waterfront park and redevelopment zone. At approximately 60 miles from both Cleveland to the east and Toledo to the west along the Ohio Turnpike, big city services are easy to access.

The area lies in mainly flat coastal plain with grassland and sparse trees along Lake Erie and Sandusky Bay, giving way to mostly agricultural land to the south. Lake Erie effects moderate the continental climate, but produce considerable clouds, and precipitation at all times of the year (especially in winter). Winter snows can also be heavy with the lake effect. Summers are normally pleasant with lake breezes, thundershowers, and periods of sticky humidity when the winds don’t cooperate.
