Indio, CA is a city in Riverside County that has a rich political history. It is the largest city in the Coachella Valley and has been an important part of the region since its founding in 1876. The local government in Indio is made up of a five-member City Council elected from wards and a mayor elected at-large. The Mayor serves as the presiding officer of the Council and oversees all executive functions. The City Council is responsible for setting policy, planning, budgeting, and maintaining infrastructure such as roads and parks. Additionally, there are other local leaders such as county representatives who serve on boards to support issues that affect the community such as housing, health care, education, public safety, transportation, and economic development. In recent years Indio has seen an influx of new residents due to its close proximity to Los Angeles which has also increased the importance of politics within the city. Despite being a small town it is clear that local politics plays an important role in making sure that Indio remains a safe place for everyone to live and thrive.

Here at BestPlaces, we were looking at the voting patterns since the 2000 election and realized that we could express the results of each election as one letter. R if the Republican Party candidate won, D if the Democratic Party candidate won and I if the Independent Party candidate won. The six elections (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020) would be expressed as six-letter word (R R D R R).

Then we went a little further and added the dimension of magnitude. If the difference of victory was greater than 10 percent, the letter is upper case, and lower case if the difference was less than 10 percent. This allows us to see interesting voting patterns at just a glance.
