Plymouth, MI is a city located in the western suburbs of Detroit. It has a long history as an important part of the greater Detroit metropolitan area since its founding in 1825. The Plymouth City Council is made up of seven members, each representing one of the seven wards that comprise the city. They are responsible for leading and managing municipal matters, passing ordinances, and making decisions that affect the community. The city also holds regular elections to select new representatives for each ward. Currently, Plymouth's mayor is Oliver Wolcott, who was elected in 2018 following a runoff election against his opponent Scott Kincaid. In addition to local politics, Plymouth citizens are active participants in state and federal elections as well. Michigan voters have their say on many national issues each election season and their voices are heard throughout the entire country.

Here at BestPlaces, we were looking at the voting patterns since the 2000 election and realized that we could express the results of each election as one letter. R if the Republican Party candidate won, D if the Democratic Party candidate won and I if the Independent Party candidate won. The six elections (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020) would be expressed as six-letter word (R R D R R).

Then we went a little further and added the dimension of magnitude. If the difference of victory was greater than 10 percent, the letter is upper case, and lower case if the difference was less than 10 percent. This allows us to see interesting voting patterns at just a glance.
