Sedro-Woolley, WA is a small city located in Skagit County in the northwest corner of Washington State. The city has a mayor-council government and the current mayor is Deborah Brenckman. The City Council consists of seven members that are elected at-large to four-year terms. In addition to the regular council, there are three independent boards that provide oversight and advice on topics such as planning and zoning, parks and recreation opportunities, and economic development. Every two years Sedro-Woolley residents elect candidates from their own districts for positions on the Council, while those running for Mayor must be qualified voters of the entire city. Along with local elections, citizens can also participate in state and national elections. As with all politics, it’s important for citizens to stay informed about their local political issues so they can make an informed decision when casting their votes.

Here at BestPlaces, we were looking at the voting patterns since the 2000 election and realized that we could express the results of each election as one letter. R if the Republican Party candidate won, D if the Democratic Party candidate won and I if the Independent Party candidate won. The six elections (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020) would be expressed as six-letter word (R R D R R).

Then we went a little further and added the dimension of magnitude. If the difference of victory was greater than 10 percent, the letter is upper case, and lower case if the difference was less than 10 percent. This allows us to see interesting voting patterns at just a glance.
