nice cost of living - 8/26/2009
Anniston is your typical small, rural alabama town. Last I heard the city was around 20,000 or so; the whole of calhoun county around 100,000. Cost of living is low, important to a retired guy like me. For 100,00 or so you can get a nice middle class house in a nice middle class area. Push towards $225,000 to 250,000 you get one of those McMansion on an acre or more. Property taxes are about $400 per $100,000 of value.

The Army shut down Fort McClellan in 1995, the local ecomomy really got whacked with that and is still trying to recover. There is some light to medium industry and agriculture (tree farms) is big. We still do have the Army depot too.

Anniston is surrounded by national forests, state parks, and wildlife refuges. Lake Logan Martin is 25 min. away, Lake Wedowee about 40, with others within an hours drive. There are 6 golf courses within a 30-40 min. drive. Birmingham is about 1 hour away, Atlanta about 90 min. drive. Jacksonville State Univ. is Read More

Anniston/Oxford Area - 4/18/2007
I've been in the area for a couple of years and overall the area is not that bad. The city of Oxford is growing and many new businesses have recently opened (Target, Olive Garden, TJMAX, LaneBryant, Old Navy, Longhorn, BestBuy) - that really improved the area. For a young person there is not much to offer in the area. But luckily it is located close to Atlanta and Birmingham. The cost of living is low, however, there are not many options for those who prefer to rent. The available rentals to choose from are very slim and in most cases run-down looking. There are only a small handfull of decent apartments (and for some reason the area land lords do not practice monthly bug control - this really bothers Read More

Anniston is poor but a nice place - 4/2/2007
I grew up in the 50 very close to Anniston. I frequently go back there to visit relatives and friends.

I find Anniston to be a bit run down, a bit poorer than it was. But still a nice friendly place. A great place to raise kids now. But, alas there are not too many high tech jobs around.

So it may be a great place to retire too. Land is still fairly cheap around Anniston, and some of the land is quite Read More
