Salem, Indiana is a small rural town located near the Ohio River in Washington County. It is known for its historic downtown and scenic beauty, as well as its many recreational activities like fishing and boating. Salem is also known for its friendly people and great local businesses. Small town living with comforts of city life nearb - 3/2/2007
Salem is a rural community which has grown tremendously in the past thirty years, although still very much a small town. Most people may not actually KNOW you, but will know OF you, or your relatives.
We are an hour's drive from Louisville, Ky which is where most people here go for their big city activities, museums, plays, movies, etc. We are two hours from Indianapolis if someone wants to go for something different.
The public schools here are adequate, although I personally feel they have declined as has much of public schooling in the past several decades.
We have several doctors, one small hospital, and of course have easy access to city doctors and hospitals.
Many people here commute to the Louisville area to work. Most of the jobs in this town are service jobs, with a few small factories remaining.
