Community attitudes matter. - 7/4/2015
I am originally from Greencastle, Indiana, a nice friendly rural town and home to DePauw University. Presently, I live in West Lafayette, Indiana, due to my having been in college when I moved up here; I was hoping to continue then transfer to Purdue University and finish earning a baccalaureate. What I found was an area of the state that is very unfriendly, economically depressed, prejudiced towards anyone with a different culture. The area accepts people that will embrace their culture and ideas. I have been in different areas of this nation and have never been in such a closed minded locale. Personally, I do not recommend anyplace in Tippecanoe to someone that is not a native of this county. The entire area boasts that it is one of, if not the greatest place in Indiana; do not believe it, with the attitude that persists here, it is one of the worst. For college students that want technical programmes look to Rose-Hulman in Terre Haute, a much better place and you will be respected Read More

West Lafayette Schools are the Best! - 7/7/2009
I am NOT a parent, but I am someone who went all the way through West Lafayette School Corporation and I can honestly say, I was better prepared for my college education than most of my peers I went to college with.

A large part of that is the fact that Purdue University is just down the road. All of their programs and events open to the public are a great way for younger students to go to a college campus, and get to learn things from the college students they look up to. Events like the Bug Bowl and the Purdue Vetreanry School open houses were always so fun and educational, not to mention the Rube Goldberg projects the Purdue Students would construct. I remember in Jr. High we modeled one of our science projects after it, then went to Purdue to watch the real thing.

At West Lafayette High School most of the teachers are retired or former college professors who really care about student's growth and development. The music programs are some of the Read More

excellent schools and socially open - 11/30/2008
My three kids went through the West Lafayette schools and they were excellent. The community strongly supports education. It's terrific that you have a community that is strongly pro-education, but that doesn't tend to be very materially oriented. My kids weren't under big pressure to have fancy things. Also, West Lafayette is quite socially tolerant. I'm gay, and my youngest son was 13 eight years ago when I came out. I worried it would be hard for him but his classmates could not have been more Read More

a little sentimental right now - 2/22/2008
Im always sentimental when talking about Denver. i love it there. i was born there and miss it like dying. it is really the true place where i personally can claim Heaven On Earth. after my parents split up i was forced to move to west Lafayette Indiana where my grandmother used to live a couple years ago. i honestly can say when i used to visit here here (in west Lafayette) i was scared. it was usually overcast and foggy. i thought Indiana was where the Headless Horseman was. lol kinda funny huh? n e way a little on the west Lafayette/Lafayette area. like i said it can b overcast often but has beautiful scenery when it isn't. Purdue University is a well known college that is a proud part of the community. if your are not a Purdue fan, there is an ivy tech community college in Lafayette a little past the Tippecanoe mall. i go there currently, (not that im not a fan of Purdue) and the reason im here is cause im doing a critique essay on 2 cities. i personally like ivy tech because its Read More

Average College Town - 4/9/2007
This is the third college town I have lived in, and so far my least favorite of the three. It's nice, quiet, and the cost of living is low. Overall, not a bad place to live. It's just that, compared to other college towns I have lived in, Urbana, IL and Boulder, CO, there is a bit of lack of culture. The others had several European and/or World markets, a great arts scene including visits from world ballets and symphonies, while West Lafayette has a much more toned town cultural scene, mostly local. It's safe, cheap, close to two larger cities, Chicago and Indianapolis, and some nice parks and bike trails. Overall, not a bad stop-over place, although I most likely will not be staying here once grad school is Read More

All-American College Town - 3/22/2006
Mainly in response to the Cali to W.Laf move... lots of people are moving there from Cali (there was a recent newspaper article on it), including a world famous chef - Found at Baja Peninsula out on U.S. 52 (new location) who used to be head chef at famous hotels on the coast. But they like the friendly people, low housing costs, easy traffic... Purdue football is fun and the campus is very clean and walkable (great landscaping/architecture). Subject to central Indiana weather, but the surroundings, people and peace make up for it well. The area is growing again now that Toyota annouced they will build the Camry at the Lafayette Subaru plant. Purdue is pushing to be even more advanced and world-class as well.
