Old town, crazy fast traffic. - 4/9/2024
Visiting the town as retirees. Definitely has history but there doesn’t seem to be any traffic control. Downtown felt like the Daytona 500. We have e-bikes and take them everywhere. The old part of town has few sidewalks and the roads aren’t marked. Almost ran over three times by cars flying past on supposed slow roads with historic homes. Gave up and went back to our hotel. Shame. Seems like it could be nice. Didn’t see any other people on bikes even though it’s flat, with historical markers and 25 mph streets - guess they don’t want to be run over either.

Camden is a very fine former resort town trying to decide as to if it should use the great charm that it has in the older homes or become a very modern city and hub of the local area. Prior to the War between the States many fine summer homes and estates were built by planters fleeing the sickness and heat of the tidewater area. These summer places attracted many northerners with the growth of the railroad system that united the country. Vast hotels such as the Court Inn, Hobkirk Inn and Kirkwood made the area noted for charm, golf, horse related activies including the internationally known Carolina cup. At the end of World War II, the grand hotels faded from the local scene and vanished completely.
