a town built around the university - 2/25/2007
everything in auburn revolves around the university. when school is in session, the population is 50k. otherwise, it's 25k. there are plenty of asshole cops here, and they love to give out tickets, especially DUIs. not a crazy college town, so you can raise a family here and be safe. just beware that if you're above 25 you're gonna feel old and out of Read More

Tolerable enough, but boring - 7/21/2006
It's Mayberry after a growth spurt, only the scenery isn't as nice. If you're looking for Average America, this is it. No one expects anything unusual to show up (although Target coming to the area generated an unusual amount of excitement), the university students aren't overly intellectual or daring, religions and spiritual beliefs are mainstream, politics are conservative, high school students say ma'am and sir, crime is largely apartment break-ins during student holidays and breaks, restaurants are respectable family-oriented chains, and you can sit on your back porch and watch the kudzu grow if the mosquitoes aren't too bad. My theory is that there is a huge level of frustration with the blahness, because the wine shop at the local Krogers is absolutely thriving. It sure ain't just us rare heathens keeping it going. But if you're looking for a safe place to raise kids -- which is why I'm here -- this is a good place. There's not much bad influence to be had around these parts, Read More

Auburn's ISO fire rating - 7/16/2006
Auburn is growing in population and area very quickly. If you are looking to purchase housing in auburn be sure to find out if the fire insurance rating is a 2 or a 9 (2 is much better). The difference in insurance savings is huge and realtors don't usually volunteer the information, so you have to Read More

Typical small southern college town - 5/9/2006
I'll start by saying that the school system is supposedly "top-notch," but some people I've met who grew up and went to school here (recently) say differently. They say there is a lot of fighting and drug use going on in the high school, though I would suspect it's just as much as what is going on in every other public school in America. Crime in the city itself is pretty much non-existent, though. The whole town revolves around Auburn University - nothing, and I mean nothing, happens that doesn't involve the school in some way. If you're over the age of 22, you might as well be a senior citizen because that's how you'll feel. Everyone is so young and they can certainly act their age. I could see this as being a great city for raising a family, if you're not big on diversity. Just your average southern college town. There is not really an acknowledgment of the world outside of Auburn. Actually, now that I think about it, it's like all the country/hicksville people from all the other Read More
