Nice and quiet - but drugs are rampant here - oxyc - 1/15/2015
I'm active duty and moved here about 16 months ago for a permanent change of duty station. My family and I were looking for a nice quiet place that was safe and cost of living was good.
Well due to injuries sustained overseas I have chronic pain and it was impossible to find a Doctor here because if you are on ANY pain medications they will not take you on as a new patient.... if you are planning on coming here please call a few doctors and see for yourself. We did find a GREAT Doctor - DR. Bryan Smithson MD. What a wonderful Doctor.
But before I could see him, i had to get an intrathecal pain pump implanted to control my pain and was completely off all oral pain meds. The health care is very antiquated up here just be warned.
Living up here is very nice - especially in the spring and fall. This is a tourist town and the population triples or more come summer. People are reserved and not particularly friendly. The school - my daughter is in honors

climate & housing - 11/24/2010
We had a vacation home in White Mountain summer homes area. The climate in summer is nicer than in the deserts of south AZ. Homes/cabins are a bit expensive,(we sold a 100 sq ft cabin on 1/2 acre for $98,000 in 2004. There are many retired people who live there year-round, but snow can be a problem if you do not live off a paved street. I felt that it was "a resort area", and not a place where you make a permanent commitment to establishing a home for the rest of your life. The attitude is one of "I mind my own business, and you do the same". You have to be self-sufficient here or have the money to pay for everything you might need. Don't count on friendly

Life in Pinetop-Lakeside - 5/19/2007
For any interested in moving or visiting this area here are the basics of it.
It is a small community that is growing from people trying to escape the city life. Actually it is growing too fast for its current job and living market. The job market consists of mostly motels and retail. The largest shopping center in the area for a few hundred miles is Wal-Mart. There is one main theater with six screens and a small one in Show-Low with two. There is a small community college as well. Cultural events consist of a yearly car show a very small rodeo and occasional pow wow events for tourists held by the local native tribe. It also sports one casino run by the Apache tribe on the reservation. The cost of living here is high while the job market offers little pay. Most often minimum wage. In another ten years this town should be around the size of Flagstaff and by chance may even get a mall by then.
If you want to walk scenic trails through the woods this is the place.
