Arizona's Second City by a Mile - 2/21/2006
Tucson is the liberal alternative to staid, conservative Phoenix. This is a good thing, IMO. But Tucson has major problems.
First, Transportation. Tucson's roads are terrible. The city is difficult to get around in. With one freeway, you're stuck using major streets and a parade of stoplights. Phoenix may have more traffic volume, but it is much easier to traverse and it has a stellar airport. Second, crime is ridiculous. I haven't felt safe whenever I've visited. I don't what know what to attribute this to. Poverty, perhaps? The vast majority of this city is impoverished, with decrepit buildings and dust-covered ranches with ugly yards. The mountains to the north are a nice backdrop but I don't think Tucson is more green than Phoenix. Someone from San Francisco said the air here was clean, but I think they're commenting on how sunny it is compared to the relative cloudiness of the Bay Area. Indeed, air pollution here is evident. Besides, what city has cleaner air

Roof Rats in Tucson - 2/17/2006
The Mesa and Phoenix areas seems to be having a problem with infestation of Roof Rats . Being from the Mid-west Roof Rats are a new thing for me to try to understand . It seems they get in your attic and come down your walls , chewing through wires , metal and drywall , whatever, and enter you living areas. Does Tucson have this problem also

Tucson mostly good - 2/4/2006
I have lived in Marana (just NW of Tucson) for 6 years. We moved here as naive kids from Oklahoma and at first, we hated it...people seemed rude and the hispanic influence shocked us. But with time and maturity we love the culture and the food...and the town. The people are still rude as compared to OK or Texas, there is no southern hospitality, no small-talk or helpful neighbors...no chit-chat at the grocery store...but the lack of black/hispanic/white racial tension & conservative religion makes it much easier for us to live here. You don't have the same predjudices and I love that. The alternative lifestyle is great and we have grown to love the easy access to alternative medicine, art, and culture. Tucson has lots of art and organic farmer's markets, there is a steady influx of forward thinking medicine. I love that! There are a lot of hobos but they are harmless. The weather in the summer is terribly hot and if you have small kids that sucks because you are confined indoors

response to john's crime inquiry - 1/28/2006
i believe that the crime rate is mostly due to property crime. tucson does not have a "violent" crime problem. however, there is often a problem with cars getting broken into, construction sites getting looted with supplies being stolen, and other miscellaneous "small" crimes. being so close to the border, the issue with the violent crime mostly comes into play with people involved in illegal activity regarding smuggling of drugs and/or people from mexico. hope that sheds some light on things. i've lived in tucson now for three years and call it home and feel totally safe. i absolutely love it here, but i'd recommend getting a place with a garage for your

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes - 1/18/2006
I first arrived in Tucson in 1954, Left in 1978 and returned in 2003.Upon returning in 03' I noticed there was almost no change in the infrastructure (roads, lights, sidewalks, etc.) from 1978. Many people have moved there and traffic is unbearable.Wages are low,There are no large corporations there to provide good jobs, they are all service oriented jobs. There is no cap on property taxes, mine went from 3600 two years ago to 5000 this year, due to all the people moving there from other states which is driving up the price of housing through the roof. The city and county governments are reeking with corruption. Where all the money goes, nobody knows. The heat is oppressive in the summer. The middle class is disappearing and polarization is evident. There are those who have a lot and the vast majority are barely getting by. There is a huge homeless population, sky high crime (check it out on this site) and a large University population stuck in the 60's. I'm

why call the police? - 12/27/2005
I guess my only problem with Tucson is the crime rate and the lack of police response. I moved from Massachusetts where while the land mass is equally as populated- the districts are smaller and police presence is much more known. Three- yes THREE- nights in a row cars parked in our driveway were broken into and robbed and the police seemed uninterested in our problem and no officer ever came to help us- little scarry. other than that- how can you beat these warm

Warm, good economy, progressive - 12/7/2005
Best weather is in the fall and winter when it's amazing. Summer is hot, but that's what AC is for.
The housing is relatively cheap compared to most cities.
The surrounding area is beautiful, and it's close enough to the ocean. Mexico is a great place to visit and discover.
The Hispanic culture here enriches the area. The food is great. Check out Poca Cosa when you visit.
There are many festivals and art events here. We have the All Souls Parade!
Now is a good time to buy a house here as the market has stabalized after a surge last year.
Tucson is the most progressive city in Arizona. Lots of alternative people here trying new sustainable home techniques. Being gay here is not a problem. It's safe to walk the streets at night in most places. The parks are very well used and open late filled with people.
If you like warm dry weather, and want to escape the expense and fast pace of the

Tucson is a great city - 11/21/2005
Tucson is a great place to live. I moved here 6 years ago from the San Francisco Bay Area, and I don't regret it a bit. The air is so clean and the weather is perfect almost year-round. The city has great shopping and dining too. Also, because Tucson is growing so much, there are plenty of job
