What BestPlaces Users Say about Tucson

Tucson, Arizona is a city located in the southern region of the state, known for its vibrant arts and culture scene, beautiful desert landscapes, and warm weather. It is also home to the University of Arizona and has a growing economy. With its unique characteristics, many people have chosen to call Tucson their home. To gain a better understanding of what it's like to live in Tucson, we will summarize and include excerpts from various user reviews on BestPlaces.net.

According to user "Rachel O.", who has lived in Tucson for 6 years, "Living in Tucson is like living in a colorful and diverse community. The people are friendly and welcoming, and there's always something to do, whether it's exploring the downtown area or hiking in the nearby mountains." This sentiment is echoed by user "Sammy G.", who has been a resident for 10 years, stating that "Tucson has a small-town feel with all the amenities of a big city. It's a great place to raise a family with plenty of parks and family-friendly events."

While many enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of Tucson, there are also some challenges that come with living in the desert. As user "Mark T." shares, "The summers can be brutal with temperatures well over 100 degrees, but the rest of the year is pleasant. Just be prepared for monsoon season and dust storms." Similarly, user "Maria D." adds, "The cost of living is also on the rise in Tucson, and it can be challenging to find affordable housing options."

Despite these challenges, many still find Tucson to be a great place to call home. As user "Liz W." describes, "Tucson has a unique charm and character that you won't find in other cities. The food scene is amazing, and there are so many outdoor activities to enjoy. Plus, the sunsets are simply breathtaking." From its welcoming community to its diverse amenities, Tucson has left a positive impression on many of its residents.

Really check it out before you move - 4/16/2010
My husband and I moved here in 2006 and are looking forward to returning to the midwest asap. It's funny because I couldn't imagine (before we moved here) that anyone would want to leave "paradise". So much for that...
Housing prices were outrageous when we bought and now they have slid to where they should have been. Graffitti is everywhere-even in the better, safer neighborhoods. I work downtown Tucson and the homeless and/or druggies are everywhere-sleeping near the state office building, sleeping at the main library grass. The mayor and city council seem to be asleep as well...

I remember the Tucson of my (snowbird) grandparents. I was a wonderful town back then-but nothing stays the same and Tucson is no different.
Cactus and the mountains are beautiful and can't beat the weather most of the year.

For the most part, people aren't as friendly here as in the midwest. Also is more expensive and the shopping sucks. If we had decided to stay Read More

Tucson is a great place to live - 4/8/2010
I've lived in Tucson for over 25 years now and "yes", I will admit that the Summers here can be overwhelmingly HOT, but all in all, it's a great place to live.

Tucson has a very laid back, casual atmosphere both in personal and business life. You can do almost anything, including go to the office, in your shorts and flip flops. You can tell when people are visiting for business by their out of place sport coats and ties.

The people in Tucson are very friendly. The town has quite a diverse population with a lot of retirement communities, a large college crowd, a multitude of entrepreneurial businesses and large, multi-national corporations scattered about along with a nice size arts community.

The desert is amazingly beautiful...not the tan and brown tones that many think of. The wildflowers in spring cover the ground and there isn't anything more beautiful than the desert after a gentle rain. The mountain views from all areas of the city are Read More

Lived in Tucson for 4 years. - 2/23/2010
I have to say that Tucson is at the top of the list when it comes to "love it or hate it" cities in the united states. Many people love the weather, landscape, outdoors....and that's great. But there's still nothing to do. Though its 1 hour from the mexican border, its a border town and contains everything that comes with being a mexican border town. Oro Valley's nice, but can be slightly snobby. The same goes for many of the northern parts, but overall, people are friendly. I was bored to tears after about 3 years and I really had enough of the local politics which restricted new businesses from coming in; hence, very few high paying postions unless you build missles. Please do some MAJOR research of Tucson economy before you move here. I didn't hate it, but i also didn't love it either. All in all, i enjoyed the golf weather and ULTRA laid back atmosphere, but I'm happy to say that I did the native tucsonian's a favor by leaving Tucson. (natives of the city always say, "if Read More

pollution on purpose? - 2/22/2010
hi!i would just like to know why doesen`t anybody complain about un needed pollution the city government is cousing.what i meen is that the stop lights in tucson don`t last enuogh time for the traffic to move.the longer a vehicle sits stalling the more it is polluting.it seems that at midnight the stop lights timing is longer.and also, there is a ton of intersections without green arrows.what i know is that every gallon a gas station sells the more tax money the city collects,so that means the city doesent care about cousing more pollution on purpose and we are spending more money in feul.no wonder people are so pissed Read More

Not THAT bad - 2/18/2010
I was browsing through some of the reviews about Tucson, and the opinions seem a little unbalanced. So, for those of you relocating here...it's not that bad!! I have lived here for 25 years and have my fair amount of complaints too, but there are great things about Tucson. My husband moved here from the Midwest, and he loves that we can go out all year - no snow shoveling, blizzards or natural disasters. Our kids just got bikes for Christmas, and they could go out and ride them that day! We are very active and love the outdoors, Tucson is great for people like that. Even in the summer, you can hike in one of the surrounding mountain ranges (we're in a valley so they make up the perimeter of Tucson) and on many trails there is water about 2 miles up. Ending a hike there and playing in the water is a lot of fun and very refreshing! You drink water and wear sunblock when you're out, but it isn't the Sahara, it's manageable heat. There are also lots of great restaurants here, Read More

A DEPRESSING, HOT AND HORRIBLE PLACE - 2/6/2010
I have been all over the USA and have never experienced more unfriendly, uncool people in my life! So many people here are incredibly miserable and they take it out on everyone else. We have the 3rd highest suicide rate in the nation and in the past week, 2 very young and great men killed themselves all because they hated living here so much. There is NOTHING to do but mope around all day because it is so hot you never want to go outside and when you do, there is NOWHERE to go! It is a miserable desert with absolutely NOTHING to offer. You can come here to go to the U of A, but save your beans to move as soon as you have graduated. Alot of kids here are so bored and miserable they end up overdosing on heroin. It is really sad. There is NO culture in Tucson, there is no MOTIVATION. People here are listless, maybe it is in the nasty CAP water which is filtered from feces infested water. Tucson is a waste of space. Sales Tax - 12/29/2009
The current sales tax as of January 2009 is 8.1% -- this was not posted correctly on this web site and may cause you grief from those "know-it-alls" who get their information from sites like these. I'm dealing with one of those individuals who has decided to reimburse me using the wrong sales tax and I'm pretty unhappy about businesses that think this is the most accurate site available to Read More

Four nice months - 11/8/2009
The bottom line is that Tucson has about 4 months of pretty nice weather, i.e. the winter months. And while it's sunny almost year round, it's entirely too hot the remaining 6 to 8 months. Of course this is to be expected as it is, for goodness sake, the desert. Moreover, Tucson tends to have fewer nice areas of town compared to not so nice areas. What I mean here is from an esthetic and crime standpoint, the further NW and NE areas are nice, but central and south Tucson is pretty rough. While home price are fairly cheap these days, AZ's pay scale is comparatively lower that some other parts of the country. There's an expression. "Arizona is for people you can't make it in California." In all fairness it hard for any state to compete with the likes of California when it comes to such things like weather, beaches, mountains and so on. Oh! But again. Tucson does have about 4 pleasant months out of the Read More

Pros and Cons - 11/7/2009
Moved from California and bought a house in NW Tucson in 2005. Pro: Today houses can be purchased rather cheap here. This is especially true do the shambles that our economy is in these day. $150K will get a nice, yet modest home in many parts of Tucson.

OK, so here are some pros and cons. Pros: Affordable homes, some area of Tucson a fairly nice, great for sun worshipers, mild winters, only about one month of rain, mountain, desert atmosphere, most people are approachable, good community college system.

Cons: Comparatively low paying wages, the sun is down right relentless with temps well over 100 for months and highs often exceed 110, not enough rain except during the so-called monsoons of July or August, ( almost no rain in 09), no nature lakes nearby, in spite of the mountains and cactus the overall views usually appear brown and lifeless much of the year, city lacks good cuisine, not the best work ethic, too many smoker, abundance of burn outs and Read More
