A really nice place... - 11/3/2007
I don't live there and I am fairly new to Arkansas...but if I wanted to live in AR for the rest of my life I would live in Fayetteville. It is a really nice town. From what I have seen very clean, pretty (hills and what not). There are a lot of cultured people there but there are also hicks! Hicks are everywhere people...you cannot get away from them! Some ppl are close to family some are not! What is the big deal?

All in all it is a really pretty place, nice university, nice shops, nice down town area, they recycle, variation of reliagion (did not see churches on every corner which is nice) etc.....

There is tons of nature stuff to do...
I might just move Read More

Low crime? - 9/13/2007
I have read several postings that mention Fayetteville's crime rate as being one of the reasons to live there. Sperling posts crime rates. Fayetteville rates 4 and 5, the US rates 3 and 3, and low numbers mean low crime. I would, though, have to agree that Fayetteville's crime rates are one of the best reasons I could think of to live there, as opposed to its traffic fatality rates, the pct of its pop that speaks intelligible and correct english, the pct of its pop of 55 year old men who are open to new friendships with 55 year old guys from the west, the harsh climate (compare to Seattle), the quality of construction there, the lack of govt regulation and law enforcement, the redness of the state of AR, the redneckness of the state of AR, the idiocy of the states road work policies (doing 180 mile stretch at a time instead of 20 miles on I-40), the high divorce, smoking, bankruptcy and obesity rates, etc. To sum up, altho Fay's crime rates are considerably higher than the rates Read More

Not all things to all people - 8/7/2007
Having read most of the commentary about my fair city, I can say that there is merit to most all of it. Some of the people who were born here (I wasn't) think that they are owed the spoils of the new found progress and success of the region. And yes some are even isolationists; preferring to spend thier free time with those they have known. However, this is not reflective of a majority of the residence since the "boom" began and more and more nonnatives have moved to the area. The infrastructure is also trying to catch up with the growth, and will require patience for commuters. If you moved here from a larger metro area to NW AR you will find that sophistication and culture vary widely, but don't be fooled by the accent. There are a lot of smart people here that have made great sums of money that could live anywhere they choose. Someone that makes thier home here is probably going to like most places with clean air and water, abundant opportunites, and friendly people who still care Read More

Jerry is sad? - 11/23/2006
Alvin, it sounds like you are the one who needs to do some research. FBI.gov clearly shows that the South, as a region, has a higher crime rate than any other region including the west. Even right here on Sperlings best places you can easily bring up a list of the cities with the worst crime rates. Of ALL large cities (metros over a half mil) in the country, one of the top two is in Arkansas, and the other borders on Arkansas, and 8 of the 12 worst are in within 500 miles of Fay. Sperlings rates Fay a 4,5 on crime, the same as the city I am living in. Since more people die in wrecks than from murder, it seems strange that you attribute such little importance to traffic Read More

Comparison of Fayetteville to another part of the - 11/21/2006
I recently moved from Fayetteville, Arkansas to the great pacific northwest. I have been in the PNW for 5 months now and love it! Here is a comparison, tit for tat, to help you decide which of the two you would like better:

The PNW has a climate that is moderated by the pac ocean, and you can get as much or as little rain as you want by moving inland. The desert is about 150 miles inland. The major cities get about the same amount of rainfall as Fay, but it comes in a gentle off and on drizzle from Nov 1 thru Apr 30. May thru Oct expect a lot less rain and humidity than Fay.

Interesting wildlife that can be easily viewed in the wild in the PNW include whales, salmon, sea lions, seals, elk, etc. For Fay, the list includes black widow spiders, ants, bugs of all sorts, coyotes, snakes. The PNW has very very few bugs. Accordingly outdoor cafes are bug free and very popular.

The PNW has big mountains that rise up from sea level. When you Read More

Jerry is a sad man - 11/21/2006
Jerry all i have learned from your two postings is that your just a bitter person who looks for nothing but the negative side of things. I was raised in California until recently when i bought a condo in fayetteville. I have gone above and beyond to embrace the different lifestyle that is fayetteville and in return i have made all kinds of new friends because i took a chance. Sure there are some people that are rude and will try and put you down, but you will find that anywhere. In one posting you stated that if the Gentlemen sold his house in San Fran he could live of the proceeds sorry to tell you that is not true. He may be able to live for a few years but not the rest of his life. You also make a statement about the number of deaths a year do to traffic accidents, that is true but did you know that most of California(since you stated west coast states) has almost triple the crime rate compared to arkansas. So sure there might be 22 deaths on average do to traffic accidents Read More

Re: I love this town - 10/1/2006
Allison referred to a CNN listing that showed that Fayetteville was supposedly one of the top 100 places to live. CNN, Money Mag, and others (not including Sperlings) take a quick and careless look at what are the best places to live. There are many important factors that they do not take into account with their simplistic little quantitative approach. Sperlings takes a closer look, but you have to go beyond the "Compare" screens and read some of their other studies and check other sources as well. One of the many things that CNN didnt mention about Fayetteville is that men there over 40 are so close with their relatives and life long friends that they are very closed to new friendships with new men that move in from elsewhere. By friendship, I mean new guys to hang out with on your days off, etc. Another thing CNN's simplistic approach doesnt take into account, that Sperlings does, is traffic safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports on traffic Read More
