Diversity, interesting neighbors, undefinable ener - 1/28/2006
On my block in Beverlywood Adjacent, there are three families from the subcontinent of India, four black families, two Asian families, three latino families, and 7 white families, two of whom are gay couples -- all of whom are linked by their friendliness, dogs, care over houses and gardens, and comfort with diversity, "Crash" aside.

Within driving distance, we have among the best beaches, shopping (malls and specialty stores), farmer's markets, restaurants, libraries, fashion design, museums and galleries, music, zoos and aquariums in the world. And if you garden, practically everything grows here, except peonies, which I truly regret.

And did I mention the produce? Two asparagus seasons, two artichoke seasons, amazing citrus, avocados, every kind of stone fruit, many grape varieties (all delicious) fresh corn for months -- I'm horrified when I go back East and see what passes for produce in the winter.

We also have gang conflicts (luckily Read More

For April - 1/26/2006
April,

The South Bay area (Torrance/Redondo Beach) is is a good area. West LA has more of an active night life (Westwood/West Hollywood/Santa Monica). Palms is okay if you like hanging around college students. Just avoid downtown at night. Avoid East LA and South Central if you Read More

Hi April - I'd suggest Santa Monica, West Hollywood, Los Feliz and Silverlake. Those are your best bets but be prepared to pay approx $1800 - $2K per month in any of those cities for a 1 bedroom apartment. Good luck with the Read More

Looking to Move to CA - 1/24/2006
I am curious, I just recently came across this site and I am seriously considering making a move from my native & boring city of Dallas/Fort Worth, TX to California. If you are married with kids then D/FW, TX is the place to be but not so much for the single professional.

I know the cost can be up there but you can not beat the natural beauty and weather. I am curious if anyone can suggest a few nice cities in California to live if you are single. It would help me tremedously with my search for the best place to live. I am also open to suggestions for other states.

What the other posters have said is by and large true. I'm visiting this website trying to see if I could really handle moving to another city in another state because my husband and I currently earn $140K combined per year and are unable to purchase a home. Well, we can buy a fixer upper townhouse about 1 hr outside of the hub of the city for $4K a mo but well, that's a little ridiculous.

Anyway, aside from housing Los Angeles is a wonderful city. Few other cities offer as many different neighborhoods, cuisines and unbelievable weather. OK, the earthquakes. I've been through many and only the Northridge quake rattled my nerves. If you can survive a roller coaster ride you can survive an earthquake.

The only other problem we have are people moving to the state. LA used to be a place where you'd be hard pressed to hear a car horn honk, now with all of the East Coast transplants it's become very aggressive.

I love it here and if it Read More

Beautiful, yet expensive - 10/13/2005
I love living in Los Angeles for the weather, and close proximity to beaches and mountains. However, before you consider relocating here do your homework. Living in LA isn't cheap by any stretch of the imagination! A basic 2 bdrm starter home in a somewhat decent (though not glamorous) area will run about $450,000 - $500,000! A 1 bdrm rental in a similar neighborhood will run about $1100 - $1300 per month. And if you want to live remotely near the beach, you may as well add at least another 50% to the above listed housing costs. Also, you have to drive everywhere and gas isn't cheap.

It's great to visit the beaches and go hiking through the hills, but may not be worth living here. Incomes don't match up w/ rising housing costs which is a big problem. I predict lots of bankruptcies and foreclosures in the very near future.

On a different note, California has an attitude that I haven't found anywhere else in the U.S. Things are very laid back here Read More
