Nice, basic city - 6/23/2023
We lived and worked in Scotts Valley for a number of years. It's a nice enough city, safe and clean unlike some areas of Santa Cruz. It's well managed and the schools are great. The weather is fantastic, with mild winters, cool summer nights and warm summer days. The natural setting is pretty with surrounding redwood forests, and it's an easy drive (assuming no beach traffic) to the coast.

But it's a basic city and not for everyone. The city caters to commuters looking for a bedroom community with quick freeway access, car-centric cookie cutter subdivisions, and strip malls. There's no real downtown or heart of the city. Nor is it very walkable or bikeable since this usually requires navigating busy 4-lane high-stress stroads (look it up) such as Mt Hermon Rd and Scotts Valley Dr, which is dangerous and unpleasant.

Wonderful Small Town - 10/8/2014
Scotts Valley is an ideal, small town with many wonderful features. It's just 10 minutes from the beaches in nearby Santa Cruz yet doesn't get the wet fog because it's in a valley. The sun shines most days and if it is foggy, it burns off quickly. With just about 11,000 people living in Scotts Valley, it is large enough to have several good restaurants, a couple major grocery stores, a terrific library and a recently renovated movie theater. Plus, it's close to a couple state parks and glorious redwood trees (the tallest on the planet). Finally, the area is crowded with top wineries and the Chamber of Commerce hosts a fabulous Art and Wine Festival every August. The schools are reported to be some of the best - though I don't have school-aged children. Housing can be a little high but you're in this beautiful town and values will increase Read More
