Now That I've lived here over 2 years - 9/20/2020
In moving here I knew about the snow. Not a matter of if but how much. What I didn't know was how windy it gets and how often. I also didn't know about the dust. It's pretty dusty here. They also have bug seasons as opposed to where I moved from where certain types of bugs are around year around. Ants are generally the first bug to show up and stick around in numbers for about a month. Then the earwigs show up, again in numbers about a month. I heard about spider issues before moving here but we haven't had any problem with them in the 2+ years we have lived here. Then comes October and the Ash Aphids. For about 2 weeks they hang around and they are in the millions. I heard that the summers can be really hot compared to where I came from but I haven't really found that to be the case. Moved here from Seattle in 2018. Even though the population is under 40,000 it doesn't feel like small town Mayberry. The biggest mistake I see happening is the building of new construction communities with no added amenities, like grocery stores, near those new housing communities. Plus all the houses have no land and are almost on top of each other. I suppose if you don't like lawn work or gardening that would be ok. There are two major grocery stores in town. Super 1 and Yokes. They are fairly close to one another only separated by I-90. There are two Walmart stores one to the West in Post Falls the other to the East. All the major stores that you see in big cities like Seattle like Fred Meyer, Safeway, Albertson's, Home Depot, Lowes etc are all in Coeur d'alene which is about 9 miles away. If you want a place to eat, buy a car, service a car, Post Falls has that. It seems every time a new business comes into town it is a place to eat. Post Falls had great potential; too bad the city planning committee blew it! It's such a disorganized bunch of housing communities built just what looks like where ever there was vacanct lots! They can be between apartments, mobilehome communities, farms and businesses! They don't have enough paved sidewalks, trees, playgrounds and for the population;strip mall! Used to love here but... - 2/27/2008
I spent the first 27 years of my life in Post Falls and it was a great place to grow up. The problems started to occur when people from around the country began to view the area as a great place to live. As people started to move in home prices went up dramatically, the prairie was changed from farmland to housing developments, and the area became extremely crowded. The home prices were probably the biggest problem, because there is no industry here and wages were/are not high enough to allow the average "local" to afford a home. Post Falls used to be a nice little town and still is but the whole area is becoming more of a retirement community and wages in Idaho are terrible. They are still in the ice ages and minimum wage is only $5.15 where Washington and Oregon are both over $7.50 an hour. There are not enough jobs to support those who are younger and trying to make a living, especially if you want to make more than that measely minimum wage. Idaho is a right to work state, and boy don't the employers know it. They don't have to pay you more than the minimum wage or offer you regular breaks and lunches, and they won't. You have the right to work, not the right to be paid fairly or treated fairly like most other places living in the year 2006.There you should just consider yourself lucky to have a job, you don't really need a lunch if you work a 10 hour day, right?!
