My hometown has disappeared from Planet Earth - 11/13/2018
I was born and raised in Attleboro, as was my father. Lived there from 1950-1968 and again from 1970-1973. The town was not bad when I was growing up, other than the fact there were lots of bullies in my area (South Attleboro), at least there were jobs.

My understanding is after the Vietnam war ended a number of Vietnamese and Cambodians came in as refugees. I don't remember for sure who did what, but one of these groups (if I remember correctly that was the Cambodians) actually enslaved the other group. Then there was a family from Attleboro that started some crazy religious cult where they literally starved their kids...

After that... both the jewelry manufacturers pulled out, as did Texas Instruments. So how would this be a "great place to live"??? Last time I was there was about 10 years ago... it looked like my father's worse nightmare came true. He was a City of Attleboro firefighter for 30 years. There was a section of town that he always called Read More

High COL but decent area to live - 10/12/2012
I'll try this again because my reviews seem to have difficulty posting to this Sperlingbest website.

Attleboro is basically a suburb of Providence, RI and thru the years, became a commuter Rail center for travel into Boston. Personally I think the COL in New England has always been beyond ridiculous. That includes Attleboro. Property taxes are far from cheap. Much of the housing is old and that means higher cost for upkeep. There is no bang for your buck in these parts when it comes to housing. Rent is truthfully so ridiculous. I don't know how they get away with the monthly charge. A 1 bed apt in someone's older home. Pay your own oil for the heat and its up around $800 or more. Half the time the apt is in someones attic or basement. You can probably get a little cheaper but would you want to live in some of those areas. Probably not.

The commuity was the center of the Jewelry industry for many decades. That is gone now. I am not really Read More

One of Boston Magazine's best awards - 9/3/2008
Attleboro, MA is fast becoming one of the best places in Massachusetts to live. Once a thriving jewelry city, over the past 30 years Attleboro experienced a decline in quality of living, schools, recreation and business. However, over the past five years Attleboro has elected a new young mayor with the foresight and ambition to turn his city around into a thriving small hub. Attleboro is very conveniently located between Boston and Providence, RI. It boasts a commuter rail train, a rapidly growing zoo under the leadership of a new director, hospital, Lasallette Shrine, a beautiful big library as well as a host of new projects in the Read More

Cost of living - 6/1/2007
One of the cheapest cities in the area. Actually Attleboro is surrounded by mostly "town" sized communities. Living in Attleboro has no real downsides of being in a "city" (pop only 44,000) but allows you to buy more home for the money and also allows you greater access to Read More

Southern New England - 3/2/2007
I've lived in Rhode Island and Massachusetts all my life. We have wonderful beaches and state parks, a strong economic base, a complete change of seasons, a strong arts presence, excellent schools and universities, some very rustic inns, museums, restaurants, etc. , and we are the birthplace of the nation. We also have some of the rudest, most narissitic individuals, the worst drivers (RI particularly and the hardest places to drive in (Boston), and a general suspiciousness, cynicism, and xenophobia that you would ever want to encounter. There are some warm folks but all in all people here just don't have the time or inclination to care much about others around them here. I don't know where it comes from but I notice the contrast immediately whenever I travel, except to NYC where it is very Read More
