Northampton is a one of a kind place to live. - 7/27/2018
I was born in Northampton in the 1960"s and have lived other places but always came back to live here. My two children were born here too. What draws be back to Northampton and why I chose to buy a house here and raise my children here is the respect for diversity of all kinds, the beauty of this small city, lively downtown with mostly small local businesses and I know of no other small city of this size with over 125 high quality places to eat, especially ethnic food. Northampton offers a high quality public school system and smith College campus private day school as well. We are part of the 5 college system, complete with public transit to these colleges. Many people take the bus or bike to work, lots of bike paths here. this is an expensive place to live but there is so much to enjoy here. We have two big, old public libraries that offer preschool drop in programs. We have the Iron horse music hall and the Calvin that offer nationally known bands. We have the smith college museum, Read More

Pricey housing and long winters, but a pretty good - 8/13/2015
The greater Northampton, MA area is generally a pretty good place to live, if you're interested in Western MA or southern New England in general. MA is more affordable than CT, and has less harsh weather than VT, NH, or ME. But even still, winters are long...5-6 months on average, so make sure you can deal with the cold and snow. Great place to live if you love winter sports of all kinds. Northampton is pretty liberal/progressive, a little bit pleased with itself, and pretty pricey for housing. You can get a lot more house by choosing to reside in one of the surrounding towns, but the school systems aren't as good. Northampton is well-known for being an LGBT-friendly and welcoming town, but there's also no "gay center" here, so if you're looking for gay hangouts, there really aren't any because the high number of lesbian (especially) and gay households are very well integrated into the greater community as a whole. This area has a lively arts and music community, and it's easy to get Read More

Small city with so much culture - 5/2/2008
Northampton is a very progressive, diverse, liberal small city where you will find so much to do in just the downtown area alone. Music, shopping, restaurants, bars, parks. You have the Connecticut River, Mt. Holyoke and the seven sisters mountain ranges. Great location and easy to get anywhere with a small airport and consistent free busing to all the five colleges between here and Amherst. If you have an open mind and like people watching downtown is always a fun area. Always good bands and performers coming to town, overall great place to Read More

Best in West(ern Mass) - 2/4/2007
My husband and I moved to New England in 2005 from California for my husband's job training. While we knew it would be a huge change for many reasons- from big cities to small towns, from sunny and mild to humid and hot/feesing in the snow- we were pleasantly surprised to find the little gem of Northampton, Mass. When we first moved out this way, we lived in Suffield, CT- a sleepy suburban/rural town on the border between Mass and CT. It was very relaxing to say the least, but of course also quite boring. As a young married couple with no children, we definitely felt the lack of excitement. Most of the people we met through work lived in the Northampton area- which is packed with restaurants, bars, pubs, shops and definitely more young married and singles. Northampton is definitely more expensive than other areas of Western Mass, but for us, it's worth it to be walking distance to the fun. It's a very busy place on the weekends, and parking is often difficult to find (nothing Read More
