4. In contrast, Robert L. expresses his disappointment with the current state of Detroit and the decline of its once-thriving downtown area. It's not the same city I remember."

Do any of you live in Detroit? - 11/11/2005
I have lived in Detroit for the past 2 years and have found it to be very different than most people believe. Diverse, friendly folks, great sports teams and events, a new restaurant opening every week, and a great spirit of activism throughout the city. Plus it's seated on a beautiful river that you can kayak on in the summer, and is right across from Windsor, Read More

It's really not that bad.... - 11/11/2005
I have lived in the metro Detroit area all of my life. While I agree that it is not the most pleasant place to live (specifically areas near downtown), there are definitely some really cool things to see and do here. The northern suburbs, such as Birmingham, Royal Oak, Troy, etc., are extremely wealthy and nice. You would not believe you were anywhere near Detroit if you were in these places, and yet they are only 1/2 hour drive from downtown Detroit. Oakland County is the 3rd richest county in the U.S. Also, there are many cultural activites in Detroit if you look. I would definitely recommend avoiding the downtown area in its entirety if you can, but try not to push the image of Detroit onto the neighboring suburbs. They really aren't that bad - why else would so many huge public companies plant their headquarters Read More

one thing i remember about the big D - 11/2/2005
I grew up in Detroit, and moved away 10 years ago.
One thing I remember when I lived there was that everytime I went on vacation, I always wanted to relocate to that city. It didn't matter where it was. San Francisco, Toronto, Toledo (yes Toledo), Cleveland (much nicer than D.),..

Detroit Airport - 10/30/2005
So Detroit isn't the nicest place to live. I still like the airport. I've had to stay there many times because of my flight being cancelled. I think its one of the best airports I've been too. It's clean, cool, and pretty. (the expensive fountin adds alot) I think everybody should go there at least Read More

Don't move to Detroit - 10/6/2005
Don't move to Detroit unless you have these things:

Car:
A car alarm. A "Club." Anti-theft locks on your wheels. Off-street, secure parking (your backyard is not secure.). Two cars, because if one breaks down or is stolen, good luck.

House:
An alarm system. Bars on your windows. Curtains-always closed. A vicious guard dog. A gun (you do not have to believe you are pro-or-anti-gun. Just do it.). Watch out for lead paint, lead pipes that might poison your water. Be careful about the air you breathe; if it smells funny, stay inside, as it's probably toxic waste from the incinerator that you are breathing.

Mental:
A "frontier" mentality. An appreciation of "bohemian" life, without any sort of economy or cultural infrastructure to support creativity. A blind eye to corruption, to graft, to limping, crack-addicted beggers. Preparation to be mugged, attacked, have your dog shot, cars hit you if walking or biking, finding dead bodies in Read More

consider every other place on the planet before re - 10/5/2005
the detroit i grew up in does not exsist any more. there are a few bright pockets of culture and though sadly, dwindling fast, a few landmarks remain. apathy is rampent and unfortunately the schools are horrendous. detroit is really not a place that you would want to raise a family. city administrative services are puzzling at best and defy logic the rest of the time. there is some amusement in trying to figure why the city puts some of their policies into effect, but after you finish scratching your head , you have to deal with those policies. closing the aquarium, laying off first responders(firefighters, police), cutting transportation services, not providing services and the list goes on. it would be comical if it were not so Read More
