Love it here! - 4/30/2018
Two years ago I moved to Albuquerque from Dallas, Texas and I love it here! The natural beauty and abundant history are wonderful: from hiking in the Sandia's on the weekends, to exploring the Petroglyphs, to natural monuments like Tent Rocks and the Caldera. There is something educational and/or outdoorsy to do here all the time. The integration of the Native and Spanish cultures affords so many cultural events throughout the year...not to mention the recent paleontology finds. It's funny, because the people who complain about ABQ are from here, but when I ask them about going to all of these wonderful places & events...none of them go! So like anywhere, it's what you make of Read More

Life in Albuquerque - 1/6/2018
My wife and I lived in Albuquerque for seven years, leaving in June 2017.
Overall Albuquerque is not a bad place to live, just not a good one.
Truthfully it is beautiful with lots of sun and outdoor activity opportunity.
The culture is kinda melting pot and non status quo in a nutshell.
The pace of life is very slow. Certainly not crowded or traffic troubled.
Fairly affordable. Now for the downside, and be prepared.
A huge amount of crime with criminals that do not serve their time,
if you doubt this look it up.There are not 3 cities in America with higher
per capita crime rates, drug addiction, lack of enough policing for its size,
or criminal cases being dismissed. Ask anyone who lives there they know.
Some pretend otherwise, they don't watch the news either.
Your chances of being a victim of some sort of crime is so high there,
it is bottom of the barrel. Not a good family city. Many hard working

I wouldn't recommend moving to this city - 9/5/2017
I have lived here for over a year, and I would highly recommend for anyone considering moving here to stay away. The city is rampant with crime, and there are thugs roaming around everywhere carrying their belongings in garbage bags. The downtown area has a lot of vagrants, and it is creepy. I actually was walking down near the corner of Menaul and Wyoming, and I saw a woman in broad daylight pull down her shorts and expose her rear end. There are a lot of mentally ill people here.

The police departments in Albuquerque and Santa Fe are rife w/corruption. I have seen aggressors punch innocent people who weren't doing anything to provoke them, and the police arrived to do absolutely nothing to stop it or arrest anyone. It seems like the mentality of the Wild West where anything goes. A lot of people here come across as extremely rude, unfriendly and have bad attitudes. You can walk into a business w/a reception desk, and the receptionist won't even look up to Read More

Very beautiful land, but not much more - 3/27/2017
Lived in Albuquerque my whole life, it's very beautiful. Mesas to the west, Rio Grande/Bosque in the middle (super beautiful in the fall when the trees turn yellow and orange!) and then the mountains to the east. Our weather is just about perfect. Too hot for my taste, but being sandwiched between Texas and Arizona, summers of only mid-90s isn't too bad in comparison! Very beautiful spring/fall, and the winter is still cold with some snow. All four seasons are very fair, though bipolar. The city is very rich in culture and food as well, especially for fans of Native American culture. One of my favorite things about ABQ is how easy it is to navigate, all the roads are a big grid so all roads lead to each other eventually.

As for crime, well, it's there. I grew up in the northwest suburbs and still had vehicle break ins every month, even got shot at once for catching the guy. Avoid the south part of the town. Southeast and southwest are both very rough and full of crime, Read More

My hometown used to be awesome now it's a $#!+hole - 2/14/2017
Don't move here. I've lived here all my life and have adored my hometown. Now I'm looking to get out. First of all, if you don't like south of the border, this is not the place for you. This whole area is 3rd world basically. They have taken over many neighborhoods and whole sectors of business like road work, construction of all kinds, janitorial, they are now Kings of the used auto business. You cannot win against them because they undercut you. Car thieves thrive here. The judges let them out too quick. Home invasions sky high, home burglary, murder, same. The streets are full of vagrants, drunks, meth heads, mentally ill just wandering around like zombies. Home of Breaking Bad for real. My once beautiful home town is now Les Miserables. A real outhouse. It's so sad. The mayor sucks and does what he wants. He is tearing up the historic Route 66 bus line even though we citizens DO NOT want it. Businesses are shuttered along the construction line. The ART transit line Read More

Happy in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho after three ye - 12/31/2016
Technically I live in Rio Rancho -- across the river from Albuquerque but this is essentially one place. I've been here three years and I'm retired and happy. People complain about traffic but it is almost always a problem with bridge traffic over the Rio Grande. Schools in Rio Rancho are good. In Albuquerque it is a little spotty and there are quite a few families using private academies. Do some research. I chose Rio Rancho mainly because I wanted more land than a city lot.

The climate is wonderful if you like sunny four season weather. Nights are below freezing now but days are sunny and in the 50s and we have not had snow in the city yet -- mountains and ski areas have snow. It rarely gets into the 100s in summer (107 is the record). Swamp coolers are more common than AC. There are many recreational options -- even in town. The hiking and bike trails go well into the back country. This is high desert but with forested mountains minutes away.

So much wasted beauty - 9/2/2016
My wife and I came to Albuquerque to retire 3 years ago. We explored the city first to see if it seemed like a good fit. It is a very deceptive city because it's beautiful, with mountains and forest nearby, and frankly probably the best year around weather in the U.S. if you like a little variety, with no extremes.

We are moving back to the frozen northern U.S. because this place is pathetic.

The incompetence and corruption here will drive you nuts and is literally life threatening. If you deal with any kind of business including medical institutions, they will not do what they say they will do, and you have to follow up about 15 times before you get an appointment. This of course is unacceptable in medical settings. People die here because of incompetence and neglect. This ALONE is a reason nobody should retire here.

As everyone mentions, the crime is through the roof. We live in one of the better neighborhoods in the far N.E. Heights. In the Read More

Cool and beautiful little city except for......... - 7/31/2016
Ahh...........quirky, cute, landscape glorious and just downright abstract
little ABQ. I lived there for a month shy of 4 years and wouldn't take back
that time for anything. There's something cosmic about central to northern
NM and if you're asingle man with nothing chained to your feet then this place
is a must. However, you have to be in government work or have a medical degree
or you will NOT make a decent living. New Mexico is 2nd to dead last in job
growth and the fiscally liberal policies keep welfare #1 there. However, if you
have money or a good job there then holy moly can you live a great life. That is unless your idea of living involves sports bars and video games. If you want to get or feel inspired then from anywhere in real albuquerque, most anything east of I-25, you're only within 12 minutes of world class hiking, cross country skiing, rock and mountain climbing and wilderness that is vast and potentially life threatening Read More
