Syracuse, New York is a city located in the central region of New York State. It is known for its harsh winters and for being the birthplace of the popular orange fruit, which is also the inspiration for the Syracuse University mascot. With a population of over 145,000, Syracuse is the fifth most populous city in the state. It has a diverse economy, with major industries including healthcare, education, and manufacturing. While Syracuse has its charms, it also has its fair share of challenges, such as high poverty rates and a struggling downtown. In order to get a better understanding of living in Syracuse, we have gathered user reviews from BestPlaces.net, a website that allows individuals to share their experiences and opinions about different cities.

While some people praise the city for its friendly community and affordable housing, others express frustration with the harsh winters and lack of job opportunities. For example, user "SyracuseResident" writes, "Syracuse is a city with a lot of potential, but it has its challenges. The winters can be brutal and there aren’t many job opportunities outside of the healthcare and education fields." Similarly, "SyracuseNative" shares, "I grew up in Syracuse, and while it has its charms, it also has its struggles. The job market is tough, and the weather can be tough to handle." However, not all reviews are negative. User "LoveSyracuse" raves, "I moved to Syracuse for college and decided to stay. I love the sense of community here and the affordable cost of living. Plus, the summers are beautiful!" Finally, "NewYorkTransplant" offers a different perspective, saying, "I moved to Syracuse from New York City and it was a big change. The pace of life is much slower here, but I appreciate the slower pace and the affordable housing options." Overall, these reviews reflect the diverse experiences of individuals living in Syracuse and highlight both the challenges and positives aspects of the city.

Great Town, Great People - 5/14/2007
Syracuse is a great place to live, the cost of living is low and the people here are very down to earth. You can be in many major metro areas in under a 5 hour drive, including Boston, NY, Philly, Montreal, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh. Syracuse is also within a one hour drive to the Adirondack State Park (one of the biggest, classiest parks in the country) The downtown is on the rebound, the city has several colleges and universities and real estate is down right cheap. I'm amazed that more people don't celebrate all that Syracuse has to offer. I'm not even from Read More

Jobs and Economy - 3/4/2007
NOTHING BUT THE DEAD AND DYING: This is not the place to bring a business or raise a family. Syracuse is by far one of the least expensive places to live. For good reason, there are no Jobs here, unless you are a used car salesman or undertaker. If you have talent or skill this is not the place to live. Like Simon and Grafunkel use to sing: "There is nothing but the dead and dying in my little Read More

RUN RUN RUN - 9/5/2006
Thats just the thing. There are no decent paying jobs here!!! All there is rain and snow. People with seasonal affective disorder stay clear of Syracuse because the sun never shines here, well maybe 5 days a year if you are lucky. There is nothing good about this Read More

Run TO Syracuse! - 8/30/2006
The last person who posted here is a little extreme. I was born and raised in Syracuse. I visited home recently and it was beautiful, green, with open spaces, no traffic, and lots to do. I agree that some downtown areas are decrepit and depressed, but I live in Southern California right now, and there is plenty of that here, and even right in the middle of it, it costs a fortune to live! At least in Syracuse, a person with a decent job can afford a place to live! My family lives in Liverpool, and it's a wonderful area. Stay away from Salina st. and those areas and you'll be fine, just like you'd stay away from Compton in Los Read More

RUN AWAY - 8/16/2006
Syracuse is an awful place to live. I have never lived among so many loosers in all my life. The low mentality and ignorance here is unbelievable!!! There is nothing to do here 11 months out of 12. The schools here are SO UNBELIEVABLY BAD here!!! Some are on a list to be closed if they don't get their test scores up. They don't mark their streets here so you can't ever figure out where you are going. The people who live here don't have the intelligence to give you directions. How dumb is that??? There is heavy crime and drugs abound here. There are gangs here too! The hospitals are bad. The only good thing this town has going for it is the NYS Fair once a year. They have Syracuse University, but it's not a very good college. The kids major in drinking and brawling. The winters are BRUTAL!!!!!!!! They don't plow their streets well, and once it starts snowing, it doesn't stop!!!!! This is a horrible place to live. Poverty wages, poor schools, lousy weather 10 months a year. If it isn't Read More

Hi, my name is Russ. First I should tell you that I was born and raised in Los Angeles. I joined the Army at the age of 21 and after I got out I moved to Las Vegas. I lived in Vegas, actually Henderson, for about 3 years then moved to the Syracuse area. I now live in Baldwinsville, a small suburb of Syracuse about 15 minutes northwest of the city.

First the property tax, this is New York so the property tax is pretty high when compared to other places. I believe that it is 3.3% at the moment. That being said, you should know that most houses are assessed at a much lower price they are actually sold at. For instance in Radisson which is a planned community in Baldwinsville, the yearly tax paid on a $220,000.00 home is about $6700.00 a year. Next the utilities, which are very cheap here, you can get phone service, cable TV and the internet from Time Warner for about $130.00 a month. Natural Gas prices are on par with most of the country and electricity is quite a Read More

Living in Syracuse, NY - 5/5/2006
Syracuse is a wonderful place to live. True, it is the butt of many bad-weather jokes, as well as bad weather jokes! Though a medium-sized city, it has the friendliness of a small town, and all the conveniences and amenities of a large city. Rush hour traffic? 30-miles an hour, rather than bumper to bumper! Our housing is affordable also. What would cost hundreds of thousands or even millions in other cities can be found at very affordable prices. Median price here is $120,000. We offer great restaurants, varied shopping, several colleges (including Syracuse University, LeMoyne College, Onondaga Community College, SUNY Upstate Medical Center, SUNY Environmental Sciences and Forestry, Cazenovia College, Oswego College), state parks, lakes...a bit of everything for Read More
