Oriental is situated on a peninsula near the mouth of the Neuse River, the widest river in the U.S. The Neuse flows into the Pamlico Sound offering some of the best sailing and fishing on the East Coast. Oriental, “The Sailing Capital of the Carolinas”, boasts having more boats than people with 2,000 cruising yachts docked at the local marinas. The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway passes just off shore, running from New York to Florida and providing easy access to the Atlantic Ocean, just 25 miles east.
If you are not familiar with the on-shore life in Pamlico County, you are in for a treat. Oriental, in particular, has a life-style flavor that has almost phased out of existence in this country. not much beyond sailing - 8/5/2008
Oriental is a sleepy little sailing town. The water is shallow and protected and the mild winters mean sailing is possible almost year round. It is a friendly community but if you need to work this county is not the place to come. Jobs are scarce and low paying. if you enjoy a variety of cultural events and interesting restaurants this is not the area to come to.
