Would not live here if I had a choice - 12/11/2018
I have lived in Shawnee for almost 4 years. It is a poor town. Yes, it has a Christian University (OBU) but the college does not influence the town much. St Gregory's filed bankruptcy and closed a year ago. There is a small mall here to shop at, but they only carry the lower end merchandise. Wal-Mart dominates. The K-Mart (such as it was) shut down last year so there is little to no competition.

There are two Homeland grocery stores but they are expensive and although they have been recently renovated, they still smell like old or rotten fruit and meat when you walk in. There is a very small Aldi's in town now too.

Shawnee does have a Lowe's, Tractor Supply and Atwood's. It also has more gas stations and banks than are necessary. There are very few sit down restaurants and only one "nice" place to go for dinner, but there are multiple fast food restaurants and Mexican restaurants.

The city is old, run down and dirty with some Read More

I think it might have been ok - 1/22/2018
I think this might have been ok, but I needed a different approach. I could have rented a place here - had some very open landlords that had some decent, affordable places.

The school district here and surrounding did want me. I am in another State now, but have been back to OK, and looking at it from a different perspective now, I do like it.

I doubt I will go back, but would consider it. I may list this as a favorite. When I left, a Pastor urged me not to go - even to come back. I think this was positive.

I was hurt by somebody from OK City and it had to do with religion. I have been hurt by religion a LOT.

I am religious - very. Its a driving force in my life.

But I'm not sure why I am hurt in it a lot. But that's been some of my problem in settling into a community.

If a church hurts me, I leave. It sort of breaks my heart, spiritually. If local churches would be better to me, it would help me Read More

The Place to Be - 9/13/2009
I've lived in Shawnee for 23 years now and my family has been here since statehood in 1907. I find that Shawnee is a delightful town to live in! It has all of your basic needs, but is also close enough to Oklahoma City that you can go to dinner there if you want to. It has that great small town feel, but is big enough that you don't see someone you know every time you go out. There are two universities in town and constant activities. It's very easy to get involved in town Read More

Excellent School - 6/26/2009
Having lived in Shawnee for the past 2 years, I have had the opportunity to deal with all grade levels. Shawnee's school system is able to handle both my Gifted and Talented Middle Schooler and my Special Education Kindergartner. I am extremely impressed with the extracurricular opportunities, including my daughter's involvment with Oklahoma Baptist University's Childrens Honor Choir.

With the low cost of living, excellent schools, small town atmosphere, and easy access to Oklahoma City the only thing deterring me from living in Shawnee forever is the extreme heat (103 today with heat index of Read More

Shawnee - 3/31/2007
I grew up in Shawnee but have lived in Carlisle, PA, Poteau, OK, Terre Haute, IN, Houston, Beaumont, and Port Arthur TX, and Rockford, IL and I can tell you that it is too hot, too cold, too much snow, and too windy in all the places I've lived except Texas as far as cold and snow go. Rockford is way too cold and way too windy and so was Terre Haute. The summer weather is nicer, but if you don't like wind, don't come to Rockford. It blows plus it snows like crazy and the temperature is still below freezing at Read More
