A nice place, but kind of boring - 7/29/2022
I’ve lived here for 9 months now.
First, what I like:
This place is absolutely beautiful, very close to nature, with great beaches, waterfalls, forests, and mountains in the distance. It’s also very safe, and people are friendly and approachable.
Now for the negative:
There’s just not much going on. There are a few cool bars and arcades, but never really any events. This is a heavy drinking town (as the saying goes: come to the river, don’t forget your liver). Live music is a rarity, although there are 1 or 2 small shows per month during the summer. There are just not a lot of young people here, and the dating scene is atrocious. Weather is gloomy 9-10 months out of the year.

All in all, I guess it depends what you’re looking for. If you want peace and quiet to retire or start a family, I could see this being a great place for that. But if you’re looking for fun events, lots of social opportunities, or you’re accustomed to the hustle and bustle Read More

Astoria, OR #1 - 9/25/2020
I have lived in Astoria, OR for over 5 years and have also visited this town for my entire 60 years. There is no better place in the US to live. My house has the best direct view of the Goonie house, I hear the seal lions every day and night when they are here, the ship horns when it is foggy, and have the best, most amazing air to breath. We travel a lot and every single time I come home I say, without fail, “the air feels so good”. There is no way to present that in a way anyone who isn’t here can understand. I live in Upper Town in Astoria, OR and I would NOT change that for anything! NOT EVER! Astoria is not perfect but it’s awful darn close. Read More

A very nice town - 10/28/2011
I went there to visit during June of 2011. I can tell you that Astoria is a very nice town. Its very green with tall trees on hills and grass very green compare to where I live. In Texas is always brown. Oregon is probably the greenest state because Oregon get enough rain. Three or maybe more movies was film in Astoria, I have seen Short Circuit,Goonies, and Kindergarten Cop was film in Astoria and I don't know if any other movies were film in Astoria. I have seen three of those movies several times and when I visiting Astoria I remember the places that I have seen in those movies like the school in Kindergarten Cop and the downtown area, also the bridge going to washington. I thought its was really neat that I remember those places that I have seen in movies before. The weather was very nice when I was visiting. But its rains there a lot during winter and more rain than the valley of Oregon where Eugene is. I rather live in Medford or Eugene because of less rain but I will always Read More

Numbers Skewed by Vacation Homes - 1/31/2010
When looking at Cost of Living figures the high number attributed to the Astoria area includes several neighboring cities, Seaside, Cannon Beach, etc. These communities include large numbers of expensive vacation homes, and consequently the Cost of Living figure appears to be off...factor that in if you are considering the area. We feel it is a very affordable area with the exception of housing, and modest housing choices are quite available especially now in Read More
