A hidden gem in an up and coming state. - 2/8/2019
I grew up in near Annapolis MD but lived in both Savannah and Atlanta GA for twenty years. Moved to Columbia in 2009 working in IT for SC Dept of Education. Had an apartment near Harbison, later buying a house in Irmo. From day one I was stunned at the laid back pace and the genuine almost innocent culture of this wonderful place. Being both the state capital and home to USC, it is small but very educated. Irmo has a blend of hidden sophistication, fearce independence, serious family values and warmth. I pray that it will never be 'discovered'. Read More

I LOVE IRMO!! - 10/17/2009
Irmo is an awesome place to live rather or not you are single or have a family. The school district (Lexington/Richland School Dist. 5) is really good. There is really no need to even consider private school. Lake Murray is beautiful and if you don't have a boat you can join the Lake Murray Boat Club and enjoy a day on the lake. Shopping on Harbison Blvd. is a must. There are also a lot of great places to eat. If you like country living but don't want to be too far from the city, I would recommend living in the Ballentine area or in Irmo on the Dutch Fork side. Downtown Columbia is about 15 to 20 minutes away and there are great shops and bars there. And of course I have to mention The USC Gamecocks football games. The tailgating before the game is an awesome time to network and meet new friends even if you didn't attend college there. This is an overall friendly area where the residents are not too hard to please. We are really glad that we moved Read More

Dutch Fork High School - 2/5/2009
This school has several gangs, many of which recruit new members by pretending to be friends with newly enrolled children- taking advantage of their desire to make new friends. The school knows about the gangs, but never mentions anything to parents, so they have no idea what to prepare their children for. This school is probably 50 percent black/50 percent white and everything seems to be segregated - down to whites sitting on their side of the lunchroom and blacks on the other side. I would never recommend this school or area to anyone, black or Read More

It's like living in Mayberry - 11/30/2008
My husband and I were born and raised in Northern Virginia (outside DC), so moving to South Carolina was initially a shock. However, after 13 years, I've come to love living in a small community. Your friends and neighbors are caring and helpful, and it's a great place to raise Read More
