Climate & cost of living - 3/19/2015
We get all four seasons in Germantown. Winters are mild with maybe 4" of snow. Summers are hot & humid. This semi-tropical enviroment is why our vegitation is so prevalent. Spring & fall are wonderful. Our housing cost are the lowest in the nation. 400k will get you a million dollar Read More

Houston High School - 5/1/2014
I don't care what anybody says about this school.... I HATE HHS! Yeah. It's a great academic (which you REALLY have to be dedicated to studying for) and AWESOME visual art and athletic school, but if your interested in theatre or singing DO NOT ATTEND THIS SCHOOL. the choir director is lazy and half the time it's only a study hall.. All you do in the theatre class us watch movies. You don't Learn anything. And MOST of all if you're an African American student here, get ready for the prejudice teachers and students who constantly belittle you and underestimate you. Read More

Two Seasons, Hot & Dead - 11/25/2007
I have lived all over this great country. Germantown is my hometown and I can't stand it. As far as the climate, it's great if you like it hot and humid. It's great in the winter if you hate snow but love it cold and rainy. This place isn't a cold escape. I would rather have the snow if I'm gonna be cold. ps I have lived in the snowy lands of northern new york, so I know what I'm talking about. The weather sucks here. Also, expect severe thunderstorms and tornadoes with flood and hail damage. there are only about six weeks a year that are comfortable. Also, the heating costs here are out of sight for the temps we get, low teens is the lowest it stays for two or three weeks. My utility runs around $300 for a 2500 sq ft house. That is just Read More

GERMANTOWN LACKS SOUL - 3/16/2006
But if you're 50 plus, retired and wealthy chances are you'll love it because everything there seems to "cater" to that crowd. It is a very expensive place to live, 99.9% white and nothing ever happens in Germantown. I mean NOTHING. That is a good thing when it comes to crime but terribly depressing when it comes to entertainment unless you consider gardening and bridge clubs and reading groups terribly Read More

People and their politics - 3/13/2006
I moved to G'town almost 3 years ago because it promised great schools, convenience to shopping and culture and plenty of medical jobs. What I've found? The political agendas, especially those of neighboring Memphis, are downright dirty. The schools, especially the high schools, are over crowded. The people are not as friendly as one might hope. There are still many racial issues in the area. Bottom line? I regret my decision to move Read More

Germantown, TN - 3/3/2006
Germantown is a terrific, albeit expensive, place to live. Virtually no crime-close to a "police state". Housing is steep, but it is truly a beautiful, well-kept suburb. The down side is that it is a suburb of Memphis, a city w/ huge crime problems & political corruption. But if you don't have to travel into Mphs for work, you can find virtually everything you need in Germantown or neighboring suburb of Collierville, except for the sporting events & concerts. We only go into Memphis for Redbird games at the new Autozone Park- it is really a first-rate ball park. Houston High School, which sits on the Germantown/Collierville city line, is an outstanding public school, with an average ACT score of Read More

Living in Germantown, Tennessee - 1/10/2006
Having been a native Memphian and living in Plano, TX in 1983, a job offer in the Memphis area was quite a shock.
I took the job but commuted for 3 months before selling our home, just in case I was unhappy.. Memphis still had the same problems it had 20 years prior to 1983 (the year of my move to Germantown). My wife was adamant about the move and said there was only one place she would consider, and that was Germantown.
Germantown has excellent cultural, recreational, and a good variety of housing. And you are pretty much insulated from the problems that plague Memphis. You have your own mayor and city council, and it is an incorporated city that will never be annexed by the city of Memphis. The police and fire protection are outstanding!
The tax load is not very heavy, but I fear a hefty increase in the Shelby County tax in the near future.
I took an early retirement package 2 years ago, and we are looking for a change. We are now ready to make a move to Read More

How's living in Germantown? - 11/24/2005
My family and I are planning to move to Germantown. Can anyone comment (truthfully) about what kind of place it is live in? I read about Memphis (pretty sad), and I need to know if Germantown is much better. - Read More
